The 1960's was the decade of my youth, from ages 9-19, but after reading this wonderful chronicle of that turbulent period, I am reminded of a scene from one of my favorite movies, Field of Dreams, which came out around 1989. Ray and Annie Kinsela, played by Kevin Costner and Amy Madigan, are husband and wife farmers in Iowa, but more importantly, they are children of the 60's. In one scene, they are attending a school board meeting and Annie gets into a verbal altercation with another mother concerning censorship of books. Both women grew up in the 60's but when Annie's opponent says, I EXPERIENCED THE SIXTIES, she responds by saying, NO, I THINK YOU HAD TWO FIFTIES, AND MOVED RIGHT ON TO THE SEVENTIES.
This book brought back wonderful memories of those years when I observed the turbulence in the country without really living it. Oh, I listened to the music of the Beatles and Motown and loved most of it, but I didn't play or sing any of it. I missed Woodstock but I did hear the music of a similar concert miles away from my grandparents' summer home in Morgan Center, Vermont. (Many attendees, much to my grandmother's horror, bathed in nearly Lake Seymour that Sunday morning.) I watched the news about the war in Vietnam, but, unlike my two best friends Jeff and John, did not debate our elders about it. I got a haircut every two weeks and dressed conservatively. Indeed, I did what was expected of a normal teenager... of the 50's.
Turbulent Years, through prose and pictures, reminded me of what I missed, most without regret. One missed moment came in a movie theatre when another best friend, Dale, and I viewed 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. This book records, on page 96, a portion of a review by a movie critic, calling it
A SURE-FIRE AUDIENCE BAFFLER GUARANTEED TO EMPTY ANY THEATER OF 10 PERCENT OF ITS AUDIENCE.
Dale and I were indeed baffled. Less than half an hour into the movie we looked at each other with confused faces and rose, simultaneously, from our seats and walked out.
I don't know if the 1960's shaped me but I'm certainly glad I grew up during those years. I loved looking back to what I missed and to what were my happy days.

P. 6 Forward written by Richard B. Stolley
When the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act passed the Senate, I sat in the press gallery and marveled that the Jim Crow laws that had almost gotten me killed in the South only a few years earlier had been swept into history.
I AM INCLUDING THIS SENTENCE IN MY REVIEW TO AFFIRM THE PREMISE I HAVE OFTEN CITED IN MY REVIEWS, THAT WE DO NOT READ IN A VACUUM. ONE WEEK AGO CONSERVATIVE ACTIVIST CHARLIE KIRK WAS MURDERED DURING HIS APPEARANCE AT A UTAH COLLEGE. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT KIRK IN THE PAST SEVEN DAYS, INCLUDING THAT HE SAID THIS ACT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PASSED.

I would be remiss if I did not mention, perhaps even dedicate this review to, one of my classmates from my high school Class of 1968. His name is Dave Flory and this is probably the first time I've written his name since graduation. Dave was one of the outstanding members of my class, named "Most Likely to Succeed." I don't know what has happened to him; I have often googled him in vain. Dave did not bend to the influences of the 60's but he did not ignore them either. He recognized that as the world changed so did our high school and that change would continue throughout the generations. As the editor of our Yearbook he was responsible for writing the dedication, which usually went to a teacher. Like so much of the 60's, this dedication did not conform to the norms of our past. I finish this review with a portion of Dave's dedication of the 1968 Palm Echo:
WE DEDICATE THIS YEARBOOK TO THE RESPONSIBLE EFFORTS OF OUR GENERATION IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE A WORLD MORE SUITABLE TO ITS OWN SURVIVAL. ...IT MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT THE DECISIONS MADE TODAY FORM THE SITUATIONS OF TOMORROW. IT IS OUR GENERATION THAT MUST LIVE WITH THESE SITUATIONS. IT IS ONLY RIGHT THAT WE SHOULD HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON OUR OWN FUTURE.
