This is a memorable short story. It has a great tone and a really satisfying ending. It’s short enough to read in less than an hour so I highly recommend it.
A handyman’s handsome mutt finds a handy snack only to have it manhandled away from him, but an even handsomer alien takes a hand in the handing back of the mishandled handy handful.
So one day, out on the farm in Buttf*kNoWheresVille, U.S. of the A., an Alien Spaceship Crashlands out on the old Carnahan land, right South of the Lower Forty where Mac McNearby, his wife Alice McNearby, and their dog Dobie McNearby live.
In the crash, One of the Aliens loses Its Hand. Dobie the Dog finds the Stray Hand and brings it back to the McNearby Farm. And then an Alien comes a-calling requesting, please, that the McNearbys return the Stray Hand so that it can be reattached to Its Proper Alien.
Alice McNearby is all for Giving the Alien back It's Hand. But Mac McNearby, being an Ornery Old Cuss, Refusses to Give the Hand Back. And He's even got His Trusty Ol' Shotgun to back up His Decision.
Bad Move Mac. You picked the wrong Aliens to mess with. And if They don't get what They came for, They'll take a Replacement for The Hand from the Nearest, Available Doner.
So a Fun Little Story, with a "You can see this one coming a mile away" sort of ending, but still an Enjoyable Read.
Also, this story has all the earmarkings of a b&w, 1950's television episode of some weekly Sci-Fi show written all over it.
