Poseidon's Gold: A BBC Radio 4 Full-Cast Dramatisation
Returning to Rome after his mission to Germania, Falco finds that his mother is being harassed by a centurion named Censorinus, who says he is chasing a debt owed to him by Falco's brother Festus. Censorinus claims that Festus was involved in a syndicate, shipping valuable statues from Greece—and that even when his ship sunk, Festus had guaranteed that everyone in the group would get their money back. Now, however, Festus is dead, and Falco knows he didn't leave a legacy. When Falco refuses to cough up any money, he and Censorinus end up fighting...and later, the centurion turns up dead. Under suspicion of murder, Falco must confront his past and uncover his brother's secrets before he can clear his name and solve the mystery.

Nach seinen Abendteuer in Germanien (Eisenhand) ist Falco nun endlich wieder zurück in Rom. Der Empfang ist bekannt unfreundlich: Falcos Dachwohnung ist eine Einzige Katastrophe, das Dach ist eingebrochen und sein Schlafzimmer ein einziger Schutthaufen. Das Ausweichquartier „Hotel Mama“ erweist sich als ebenso unfreundlich, denn dort wird Falco von einem „Freund“ seines verstobenen Bruders, des Kriegshelden, erwartet. Sein Bruder Festus schuldet einigen Kameraden noch eine große Menge Geld und Falco soll nun dafür aufkommen. Falcos Antwort ist so klar und einfach, dass selbst ein Legionär sie versteht: Mach Dich vom Acker und lass Dich nie wieder blicken.
Dumm nur, dass ebendieser Legionär am nächsten Tag tot aufgefunden wird und Falco der Verdächtige Nr. 1 ist.
Als wäre das nicht schon genug Ärger, stößt Helena auf gewisse Unregelmäßigkeiten in Falcos weiblicher Vergangenheit. Ist die Tochter von Festus Freundin Marina wirklich Falcos Nichte oder doch vielleicht seine Tochter? Da ist sich Falco selbst nicht so sicher, denn als Festus das letzte Mal in Rom war, da passierte etwas ungeplantes…
Aber wie heißt es so schön, aller guter Dinge sind drei und zwei Probleme wäre ja langweilig. Problem Nummer 3: Falcos Vater. Die Taverne, in welcher der tote Legionär gefunden wurde, gehört der Frau, wegen der Geminus damals seine Familie verließ. Zudem war er in den zwielichtigen Deal verwickelt, den Festus bei seinem letzten Besuch in Rom abwickelte und hat nun ein paar sehr erboste Kunden des toten Festus am Hals, die den ihnen entstandenen Schaden kompensiert haben wollen.
Dieser Teil ist mit einer der besten der ganzen Serie. Voller Verwicklungen und noch verwickelterer Familienprobleme. Neu dabei ab diesem Teil ist Falcos zwielichtiger Vater Geminus, der sich seine Brötchen als Auktionator für echte und echt unechte Kunst verdient.
BBC Hörspiele sind genau wie die SWR oder WDR Hörspiele exzellent gemacht. Tolle Klangkulisse und wunderbare Sprecher. Die diversen römischen Dialekte und Akzente werden durch sehr britische Dialekte ersetzt, so dass dieses Hörspiel nur für Leute geeignet ist, die wirklich sehr gut Englisch können.
Ich habe mich mittlerweile so an die Stimme von Anton Lesser als Marcus Didius Falco gewöhnt, dass ich ihn beim lesen der Bücher als Falco höre, meinen Falco habe ich mittlerweile komplett vergessen. Anton Lesser ist aber auch wirklich klasse und Anna Madeley ist einfach die perfekte Besetzung für Helena. Die beiden spielen sich die Bälle zu wie ein altes Ehepaar.
Mit eine der besten literarischen Hörspielumsetzungen die ich kenne.

A charity shop find in excellent condition and greedily listened to in just over one day - I tried to eek it out, but my curiosity of what Falco would get involved in was too much!
This story follows on from 'The Iron Hand of Mars' where Falco was sent to Germany at the behest of the Emperor Vespasian. Having successfully returned from the warring tribes, death threats from a discontent legion and the slightly worrying hands of a Celtic Prophetess - not to mention a near lethal run in with a large bovine with lethal intent on his mind, Falco and Helena return home.
Rome. Typical of Falco's luck, his roof is leaking and its raining. They decamp to his mother's home, to find a strange legionnaire Centurion who swears Falco's beloved but late brother, Festus, owes him a significant amount of money.
Falco has to investigate - not least his family's good name is up for ruin, and when he is framed for the murder of the Centurion, Falco has to build bridges with his estranged father, Geminus, to find the truth....
A rollicking adventure with the Ancient Roman's answer to Bogart!

Huzzah! I've found a Goodreads listing for the BBC Radio Play!
Sadly, Lindsey Davis's 5th book is the last they adapted for the BBC ... and brilliantly done, I might add! Listening to 'Falco: The Complete BBC Radio Collection' introduced me to, and hooked me on this series. Brilliantly narrated by;

I have now gone off and trawled through Aussie eBay to find physical books of this series (not easy to do, since publication started in 1989 and there's 32-instalments across two series ... and I think the ANZ-publisher ( Hachette) dropped off and hasn't been publishing latest instalments? Which is a real pity! Still; secondhand books to the rescue!
And I am seriously jonesing for another fix of Falco and Helena now - I am well and truly addicted!

I needed a book with a seahorse on the cover and this audiobook has a tiny one, so I listened to it for a challenge. The story was interesting, but this version is very abridged as it is more of a radio play produced by the BBC. It is interesting listening to a story set in Rome in 72AD and everyone haveing British accents. I did question a scene which mentioned a woman carrying a parcel of spare ribs from a take-away. Did they have take-away/carry out back then? Did the ribs have BBQ sauce? It didn't mention any sauce or even if the ribs were cooked, but I would guess so if they are from a take-away and not a butcher. Anyway, that is what is stuck in my head after listening to the story. The art theft element is interesting, so perhaps I will pick up an actual copy of the book and read it because I felt like too much was left out in this particular audio version.

Who can say no to a good super-old-fashioned (Roman empire-era) hard boiled detective story with bloody murder, intrigue, family strife, a sweet star-crossed romance and some stolen art to boot? Not me! Love the Falco series, and the full-cast BBC audio dramatization is incredibly well done. Recommended for vacation, transit, anytime at all.
