Lieutenant Left is barely scraping by at her maintenance job on a lonely, two-lizard mech crew. Every day seems just as monotonous as the last, until disaster strikes Commander Right on a routine mission. Now it's up to Left to step up, or risk being stranded in space... with nobody around except her hot crewmate for millions and millions of miles.
Cartoonist Iggy Craig's debut graphic novel, SAD GIRL SPACE LIZARD is a queer mech action romance (for lizards). If you are a lizard, or have an appreciation for lizards, this comic is for you. If not, you'll probably still enjoy it.
3.5 stars This was interesting. I didn't mind the art, there was something very endearing about the black & white, raw unfinished style. Then, learning about the artist's method made it all even more charming.
I felt like the character development and plot were fine, but the dialogue was lacking. For a graphic novel, which so heavily relies on dialogue to propel us forward, this took away from the story and I couldn't get invested as much as I wanted to.
Also, the lizard smut was very unexpected but not unenjoyable. This is very much *not* YA, pls note. Overall, a tender story about a lonely queer girl in space that will likely resonate with many readers.
The narrative to this comic is clear, but the relationship between Right and Left would have benefitted from a longer narrative. The feelings of inadequacy and balancing self-worth, happiness, and work were done fairly well, given the limited narrative space. The material from the artist discussing his time having to take a break due to repetitive injury and how he drew much of this comic with his non-dominant hand, though, was a nice addition to the piece. It helped establish some context to the narrative and some parallels to Right and Left’s feelings regarding work and the nature of happiness in the comic. The art style is not my favorite, but others may like it better than I did.
I picked this book up because of the lizards and because of the art style. The fact the author drew a lot of this book with their non-dominant hand is even more impressive. I also liked the choice to make space white instead of black, it added a lot to the vibe of the artwork. Right and Left are both great characters though I do wish they got a bit more development before they started getting together. I understand why the author chose to keep it the way it is because of length though. Everything felt very grassroots, like I was looking at my friend's OC sketches, and I appreciate that quality a lot.
I also wish for comics in color and usually return the book if they are not but I actually read this one and I loved it. This story is about two space lizards who feel as though they wasted their youth in space and are about to die. They end up hooking up while being attacked by aliens and one decided to not pilot and return to earth and the other moved up in ranks only to find out they didn't like the position they always dreamed up. They later talk about this and decide to start their own fleet from stolen blueprints <3<3<3
Wow! This was my first ✨️spicy✨️ queer comic and what a treat it was 💞 It's one of those stories that gets you hooked in so quickly, you zoom thru it and want more 😩 All the Iggy Craig's notes, concept art, and snippet comics were a lovely touch to wrap up the story. This story will be living in my mind rent free
The story is simple but the characters are super magnetic and their dynamic was very compelling. I really liked the author’s use of some manga elements like the outfit chapter pages and the 4koma at the end. Also Right is very hot and I should say it.
