I loved learning about Mahalia Jackson beyond knowing that she was a great gospel singer. She discusses growing up in the South along with some customs of that time. I love history; so, I enjoyed learning about ways of the South for Black Americans in the early to mid-1900's. I enjoyed reading about the struggle for Black civil rights in the 1950's and 1960's -- the Freedom Rides, sit-ins, the Great March on Washington. She weaved history well with her story about her singing career from beginning to the later years. I really enjoyed the book. I bought it at a used book store. I have the 2nd Printing Edition (1966).
The life and times of the great gospel singer, as told in her own words tells of her humble beginnings being born in New Orleans 1911, the grand-daughter of slaves, and her rise to world wide success through her spreading of the word of God through her singing of gospel music. She tells of her life, the struggles, and the hardships she faced through racial prejudice, poverty, and heartache, and how she came through it all by singing, and staying true to her faith.
