The Exile of Gigi Lane

Rate this book
As incoming Head Hottie of the exclusive clique called Hot Spot, Gigi Lane knows it is her right to see that the ducklings at Swan’s Lake Country Day school fall into line. But when one classmate exposes her as a “mean girl,” Gigi slowly and wretchedly falls to the bottom of the high school social ravine. Gigi’s first-person account of her plummet from popularity is insightful yet naïve, set in a humorous, satiric world.

HELLOOOOOOOOO THERE!!

Sorry for shouting, I'm just really excited to see you! I'm still figuring my place in the Goodreads community out, so please be patient with me and feel free to reach out - I am ALWAYS happy to talk about books!

My very first middle-grade novel Best Friends for Never just came out with Scholastic, and I am just beyond excited. I have always wanted to write middle-grade, as it is middle-grade books that made me fall head over heals in love with reading, and with writing.

I've also written books for teens, including Skin, Sight, The Exile of Gigi Lane, and Burnout. I'm working on a new book for teens now, but it's top secret so I probably shouldn't tell you about it. But once I know it's coming out, I'll be shouting it from the rooftops :)

Now I'm off to add more books to my bookshelf!

I can sum this book up in one word: ridiculous. But strangely, I enjoyed it all the same.

Gigi Lane, our narrator, is an over-the-top caricature of herself. She is the mean girl. The top-dog. The future prom queen. I'm sure you know the type, if not from real life experience, then from pretty much every teen movie ever made.

Anyway, the book starts off at the end of her junior year at Swan's Lake- an all-girl private school run by the beautiful, powerful Hot Spot. The Hot Spot is a trio of flawless, uber-popular seniors which make sure the schools stays in order. They assign the first years tasks (such as cleaning window, vacuuming, etc.), they keep the cliques in line (the Cheerleaders, the Glossies, the Vox Foxes, etc.), have a mysterious Den of Secrecy, and are part of The Network- powerful connections that will have you set for life. Sounds awesome, right? Gigi, who is next in line for the Head Hottie throne, is super excited for her senior year. But as you can imagine, and correctly assume from the title and premise, things go wrong.

I loved this book, though I didn't start out that way. By Chapter Three, I was convinced this was the most unrealistic bag of BS I've ever read. Had the writer ever been to high school in the least? I wanted to stab the very unlikable Gigi with a fork. Then Gigi came back from Alaska (read the book and find out), and a light shined down from the heavens as I finally understood what this book was. It was supposed to be over-the-top bullshit. It was sattire! Ohhhh

After that, the book was a whole lot more enjoyable as I laughed at Gigi's bizarre antics and the absurd plot. Even though it was sort of predictable in the beginning, some of the twists at the end genuinely surpised me. And Gigi changed for the better.....sort of.

So overall, I don't know. This will either be a hit-or-miss for some people. You'll either appreciate the humore, or give up on Gigi from the start. Most of the negative reviews on here complain about Gigi being "unrelatable", to that I say well, duh.

I really liked the twist at the end. It sets up for a totally different type of ending, but the way it does end is nice.

"I'm Gigi Lane, and you wish you were me." This is the affirmation that Gigi Lane recites to herself every morning and in times of deep stress. The daughter of the Girlie Bird self-help guru, Gigi has been taught to develop a confirmation that she can believe in and boost her confidence and self-awareness.

All is going beautifully for Gigi towards the end of her junior year. She attends Swan's Lake, and is slated to be the next Head Hottie. The Head Hottie and her two cohorts unofficially run the school from the Hot Spot. Handpicked by the current Head Hottie, Fiona, and cohorts, Gigi, along with her best friend, Deanna, and transfer student, Aloha, spend their junior year pretty much as indentured servants - as well as continually trying to find the infamous DOS (Den of Secrecy) before the Founder's Ball at the end of the term.

But all comes crashing down for Gigi when she mistakenly puts down a nothing girl, Daphne, one too many times, and at the most inopportune moment - as Fiona is to be crowned Founder's Ball queen.

From that point on, Gigi's life is far from one that anyone would wish for. To save face, Fiona and the "Network" behind the Hot Spot ship Gigi off to an Alaskan fish plant for the summer. With no fashion but for overalls, and little to occupy her time, Gigi bides her time in exile. But when she arrives ill-prepared for the first day of senior year determined to take her rightful place, Gigi enters an alternate universe...one where Aloha is now the Head Hottie, and that nothing girl, Daphne, rules by her side.

It's not until Gigi fights for a "severance" package from the Network to make her time of servitude worthwhile does the story really pick up and get entertaining. In order for Gigi to receive payment for her troubles, she has to get one of the other cliques in the school to fully accept her as a member. Trouble is, Gigi has stepped on more than one person to get to the top. But Gigi thinks she will easily become the head cheerleader, the star Mr. T, a Vox Fox, even a Gizmo. All to no avail. Through all her trials, she slowly comes to learn that her current affirmation may not be what it's all about.

THE EXILE OF GIGI LANE is a great story of self-discovery of one girl who truly doesn't realize the world around her until she's pushed outside of everything she knows. It isn't until her love for her school comes through that Gigi learns who she is and what truly does make her happy.

Gigi Lane is the original Mean IT Girl. She’s a ‘Hottie Hopeful’: hoping to become the girl everyone loves to hate at high school, the person everyone will remember, just because they are popular and because they have what they have (everything) and are what they are (beautiful, popular, smart, connected). Even higher up the social ladder than the cheerleaders are the Hotties from the Hot Spot at Swan’s Lake Country Day High School: the most popular, the most revered, the most connected girls of the school. One Head Hottie, with 2 lesser Minions, with a Hottie Handbook, an elusive Den of Secrecy and a fully connected Network going all the way up to the Ivy League, companies all over the country, hospital administrations, publishing companies etc. etc. Nobody really knows how far their reach is… Gigi Lane has been predestined to be the Head Hottie at Swan’s Lake since forever, so she behaves according to her status (or so she thinks): ambitious, patronizing, arrogant, except one day she goes one step too far and is exposed as an out-and-out meanie … not really what a Hottie should be, as it turns out. So her downfall begins: first shipped off to Alaska of all places, then shunned by all the cliques at her high school. Through it all and because she sees what it takes to be in a certain clique, Gigi herself – though still very much a ‘Hottie’ – starts to change for the better.

If all of this sounds too Disney Channel, don’t despair, because even though this story might also be perfect for a typical high school movie, there’s also a healthy dose of sarcasm involved, especially when Gigi describes the different cliques at her school (herd mentality all the way to the Cursed Unaffiliated) , or when she describes how she rushes them (basically ‘applying’ to get in). When even the Cursed Unaffiliated don’t want to have her, the story even gets a bitter twist, and you can see that social criticism was definitely on Vrettos’ mind when she wrote The Exile of Gigi Lane. It’s this twist of self-mockery and sarcasm that raises this book above the run-of-the-mill mean girl book. The various – and sometimes very implausible – twists and turns in the book, the exaggerated descriptions, the satire…all this make that you have to take The Exile of Gigi Lane with more than a pinch of salt. It may not be as memorable a book as Skin, but Adrienne Maria Vrettos has a knack for stories with a bit of an edge so still enjoyable enough to spend a few hours on!

Going into this I wasn't too sure of what to except. Would I hate it or would I love it? I had no clue.

Thankfully, The Exile of Gigi Lane ended up pleasantly surprising me because this novel was one intriguing expose into the many unique cliques of Swan's Lake Country Day School.

I have to admit at first I outright hated Gigi, the queen been of the juniors and upcoming Head Hottie of the Hot Spot, because she was pompous, arrogant, and just a plain old witch with a b. Though, soon after the book begins, she hits her demise of popularity queen once she takes her mean remarks to a whole new level, leaving her to fall to the bottom of the social ladder.

And because of this, thankfully, she began to grow as a person and see that not everything was how see saw it, and how the people who she had judged before didn't deserve her hurtful comments. While she still was somewhat of the old Gigi, her growth by the end was somewhat astonishing and I was proud of her for it. Plus, I even began love for her naive yet funny insight at the rings of the social latter, something I never thought would occur!

The premise of this was fun, unique, and fabulous, leaving this to be one novel I had no trouble flying right through. I loved finding out more about the different cliques as Gigi sees if she has what it takes to be part of them as well as the different characters introduced through this that make this the excellent novel it was. I especially liked Gigi's scenes with her nice friend Deanna because it showed a side of Gigi that actually seemed human, which left for you to get a better understanding of her.

Adding to this, I loved the constant twists and turns this novel took as Gigi unraveled the mystery behind the notorious Hot Spot and leaders in charge. Seriously up to the second to last chapter I still didn't fully know what to except because The Exile of Gigi Lane was just so unpredictable, an aspect I loved about this novel!

In all, The Exile of Gigi Lane is a novel I highly suggest you take a look at because it truly gives you a interesting and fresh look into what high school can be like for some, and how sometimes falling to the bottom can give you the perspective you desperately need and show who your true friends are. Also, some may be discouraged by the beginning, but don't be, it'll end up surprising you!

When I first started this book, I honestly didn't think I would finish it. But for some reason I kept reading. And by about 20 more pages I was glad I did.

Gigi Lane is not very likable at the beginning of this book (and that is the point). She is in line to be the ruler of the school for her senior year and the book starts at the end of her junior year as she and her friends are finishing rushing the elite, but secret group in the school. Once you are in this group, you do rule and the opportunities are opened to you for life plus you get a great secret room to hang out in. Gigi is very open about the different cliques in the school and what is wrong with various members of them. Some of them she is distant friends with and some of the other students she treats horribly. But then the unthinkable happens when she is openly mean to one of her fellow students. Gigi is no longer at the top of the ladder and now she has to work her way through the cliques to find one that will accept her.

A very intriguing premise, a kind of a Christmas Carol meets high school. Gigi finds her past sins as she goes through each group and along the way she becomes a different person.

Very well written and very hard to put down once Gigi was put in her place. I enjoyed the plot and the various characters in this book. Gigi doesn't end up completely changed in the end, but her growth is astounding and makes the book a very interesting read. All of the characters are interesting and I could not stop turning pages to learn more about each of them.

I thought The Exile of Gigi Lane would be a cute, fun read. It was, but it was also so much more.

We experience Gigi's popularity downfall in a rigid social hierarchy that is more clearly defined than the structure of most large companies. It's hard to like Gigi, as she is completely delusional in the way she believes others view her. Her delusions make it all the more meaningful when reality begins to set in. Self-esteem is necessary to a healthy life, but in realistic proportions. Gigi's manta - "I'm Gigi Lane and you wish you were me." - speaks volumes of her opinion of herself and others.

Teen girls live in a volatile bubble where flippant an offhanded remark by one can alter another's life monumentally. The Exile of Gigi Lane is an exaggerated inside look at this bubble. We see how mean girl bullying can take on a life of its own, while also leading a person to learn what's truly important in life. Gigi is hugely hurtful to others under the guise of helping. She seems to truly believe that making mean comments is the appropriate way to teach someone how to change their life for the better. The most shocking part of the novel is that I really did sympathize for her once she got her priorities straight.

The Exile of Gigi Lane contained a bit of mystery and a twist ending I never saw coming. This book is extremely fun with some real life lessons to be discovered. The school itself was unrealistic in my mind, but the story itself was truly engaging. The Exile of Gigi Lane is deliciously evil, very funny and surprisingly touching.

Here's the thing with me and books about popular girls. I have to be able to see some glimmer of possible hope or change. I have to have a character somewhere in the book that I pull for, want to read about.

Gigi? I did not care about her one bit. Not at all. I read about how popular she was and how she was going to take over the school and be in the elite popularity clique. I read about how important her clothes were to her and how much she didn't like other girls in the school.

Did I read anything about her figuring ANYthing out? Did she seem the least bit reflective? Did I feel bad when she got exiled? No no no.

Not to say the author is a poor writer, it's not that. There weren't a million cliche phrases used that turned me off. It really is all about Gigi.

I ended up quitting out of this book halfway through and skimming through the rest. I read a chapter or two at the end to see if I should regret my decision to quit, and I didn't.

I'm interested to see how other people feel... it's possible I just read the book at the wrong time.

This book is funny, interesting, flows well and overall is just a lot of fun. Don’t turn your nose up at it just because you don’t like high school drama queens.

I started this book thinking I would find the main character so obnoxious that I would end up hating the book. But surprise, I absolutely loved it. There is a lot of tongue-in-cheek satire of the over the top queen bee type and the genre in general, which helped. More importantly the author does an amazing job of humanizing the Gigi’s antics so she is just a confident girl dealing with a huge shift in her life. The best part (and surprising part) was that Gigi’s character never really self-implodes into that cliché melodramatic ‘I’ll change now’ that leaves you really wondering if the person with keep to their vow the next day.

Gigi falls from the top and goes to the bottom by Daphne "dog-faced" Hall who suddenly decided that it was time to say something about her after a couple of years of "tips." Eepecially on PROM night.

But you would never guess who was behind her becoming a free-agent or clique-less as you may say. But I guess you have all ready I might as well tell you . . . wait for it (for dramatic effect) . . ALOHA and . . HEIDI!!!

But Gigi is going to find the truth about . . . I'm not sure I should say this buutttt. . . THE HOT SPOT!!!! But Gigi might need the friend she always had but wasn't there for her when she needed Deena girl the most. She learns all that she needed to on her senior year of Swan Lake. you have to read it to love it. but you may HATE Aloha.

From the blurb, I was expecting a cross between Heathers and Bring It On, but that wasn't really what I got. It was a book about A popular girl's fall from power, and it was fantastic. It got me to wondering, why does chick lit usually fall under the "guilty pleasure" category? This book was one of substance, humour, morals, and social experiments. May more books like this liberate the chick-lit genre!

Gigi Lane is shallow, self-obsessed and one of the meanest of the mean girls at her exclusive girls' boarding school. Gigi's fall when she is almost-to-the-top of the heap leaves her fragile, confused and ready to fight back. This over-the-top satire of high school social hierarchies offers hysterically funny moments, a convoluted plot and plenty of opportunity for growth and self-understanding for several characters, including, of course, the memorable Gigi Lane.

This book started out slow and I wanted to stop reading almost as soon as I reached the 2nd page. Who wants to read about a mean girl? Nobody likes mean girls! But, by the 10th page you start to see other people and you put two and two together. So after that I couldn't stop reading. Granted it was slow in parts, I loved it. Definitely different from my vampire reading material that I'm accustomed to, but I'm glad I received this one. Recommended to all. :)

This book was not that great. I was ready to throw in the towel after only 50 or so pages, but decided to stick it out. It did get better, but only marginally.

I never got a feel for Gigi at all and the entire Hot Spot concept was very confusing. I had no idea what was going on in the beginning of this book, and then all of a sudden Gigi was in Alaska and "exiled". The whole thing just felt very off.

For a seemingly cute and mindless book, there wasn't anything cute about it.

This novel is like the ultimate book about popularity, except everything is so completely exaggerated, it's insane. Even though over half of the things that happen in this book are completely irrational and would never ever happen in real life, It was a funny book to read and I enjoyed getting a few laughs out of it.

combine the characters of The Ashley's from Recess and the absurd feel of a movie like Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and this sums up the book for me. it's over-the-top in pretty much every way possible, including the wish-list material perks and power of teenage popularity. some readers may like that though.

Definitely one of my favourite books ever. I was looking for some vapid-girl reading and I found this book at the library. The cover looks like a girly-girl problems-about-love kind of book and when I started reading it, I still had that belief. But I couldn't stop reading and only when I finished the book did I realize it's completely not like what I was looking for and I loved it.

I read this for a job, and the only reason I finished it was because I HAD to for work. The plot was so overly ridiculous in my opinion, and not in a funny way or anything. It reminded me of a poorly written book where whenever a character says something they "scream it" or something overly dramatic like that. Plot made no sense and was just ridiculous.

I think the only reason I'm giving this book three stars is because when I read it I was in desperate need of something to stimulate my mind. Not that this book provided much stimulation. I read it purely for the sake of reading something.
