A very intrueging first volume, with it I can already kind of see what's coming up, but I am still rather interested to see the developments from here.

I started reading this because I just HAD to see how terrible it would be... and you know what? It's a complete subversion of what you'd expect based on the title! (Er, spoilers?)

To start with, the whole reason he's an Evil Lord is that in his past life, he was so viciously betrayed by the people closest to him that when a benevolent* deity comes to him to offer him a better life, he instead requests revenge on those who wronged him. The deity can't offer that, just a better next life, so instead the main character decides that Nice Guys Finish Last, so he will instead be a Complete Asshole and abuse everyone for his own personal amusement.

Unfortunately, his new parents beat him to exactly that, so he inherits a world that has only known suffering under their evil lords. As Lord Liam, he realises that continuing to do what his parents did will be wholly unsatisfying, so he instead aims to build back up his territory so the people are prosperous... THEN he can tear it all back down! Good plan, eh??

Liam then also decides he can't trust anyone, so when the deity returns to check up on him, the deity finds that nothing has gone according to plan.

*In fact, the deity is a malicious being who wants to see Liam suffer... which is poor planning on the deity's part, since Liam was inserted into a setting where things really couldn't get worse. So the deity decides to send along a swordsman to teach Liam in the ways of martial arts.

The swordsman in question is, in fact, a con artist who uses a type of sleight of hand to pretend he is more skilled than he is. However, Liam turns out to be such an idiot savant as to learn how to do EXACTLY what the con artist was only pretending to do! This baffles both the con artist and the deity (which is particularly funny), as the tricks should be nigh impossible to pull off.

So ultimately, Liam ends up being, at least for Volume 1, a really good and benevolent lord who is beloved by the people (although he did straight up murder an embezzler due to his past trauma at being blamed for a coworker's embezzlement, but the people write it off, if anything, as fully justified). It's hilarious, and really the only thing I hate is that the old "supposed child is a complete pervert" trope has to be part of this, what with his customisation of the robot maid to be pretty, subservient, and large-chested. I guess the busty part just seems really boring after being in basically EVERY MANGA/ANIME, even the ones with male characters who are good at heart and shy around girls.

No doubt this story will become a huge letdown should be actually ever become truly evil, but I will still check out the rest to see how it goes! Off to a good (heh) start, at least!

Edit to add: It's now an anime! HOT DANG

...they've changed SO MUCH of the introduction. I'd forgotten he even had a kid in his past life, she only shows up for like two panels, and the manga basically cuts to the isekai really quickly to get to the meat of the story, vs. the anime teases the viewer with a huge space battle from... book 5? right at the beginning, THEN has Liam flash back to his terrible, ultra-persecuted prior life AND pads the SHIT out of that. They even added a whole thing where the kid is in an accident and blood transfusion requirements prove that she isn't even his kid. Like, they just REALLY want to emphasise that his wife was a total piece of shit, huh.

Still watching it, of course, what with the lull in better things to watch, haha.

(We watched episode 1, and my spouse expressed disappointment that the wife and her side piece don't get their comeuppance... decided not to spoil episode 2, though.)

Funny and really a good mind wash. Don’t expect a seriously deep story and just go with it.
Reread the whole manga series when vol 5 and again when vol 6 came out. It is a hoot.
