Celebrate the love between mother and child in this gentle, rhymed rhapsody of mother-love as dogs, cats, bears, ducklings, whales--and so many more--shower unconditional love on their babies. Filled with best-selling illustrator Lisa McCue's menagerie of cuddly creatures, Mama Loves is perfect for human mamas to share with their young.A Bright and Early Book for Beginning Beginners.
The text of the poem is okay, but the illustrations are soft and adorable with lots of different animals. Young kids should find it kind of entrancing.
Once again, Lisa McCue delivers on the cute-as-can-be illustrations. This is a story of various animal mothers and their little ones and how the mothers express their love. It's not especially original, and seems a bit long for the toddler set (or perhaps it is supposed to be an easy reader? but it seems a little "young" for the easy reader set?) but has a fun variety of animals and provides a reassuring message of a mother's love.
Fun book and illustrations to help young children learn a variety of animals. Also to learn different habitats that the animals live in. The illustrations are fun to look at and go along with the words very nice.
Set to rhyme, examples of a mama's love in various kinds of animals are given. Has some (not all) baby animal names for animal vocabulary: whale (calf), raccoon (kit), kangaroo (joey), etc. A sweet book for animal lovers or Mother's day.
Synopsis:""Mama loves you, little kit, and lifts you gently by the scruff.
Mama loves her pack of cubs and scolds you when you play too rough."

My Review: I picked this book up because I thought it would be perfect for the Valentine's Day weekend. It is a cute book with animal mommas and babies and it each page tells of the different ways that a momma shows her love, in ways other than hugs and kisses. The sentences are a little long for really young readers but the pictures help clue in on the words and the words are all simple. The copy I picked up also had a nice little card in the back that kids can give to their mommas (or someone else they love).
I had to take a moment to flip through this today because of the cats on the cover.
If I hadn't been in public I would have cried. Had to try hard not to as it was. Just a confluence of circumstances--mostly, my cat of 19 years, my baby, had a stroke at the beginning of the week and his chances for recovery are ambiguous at this point. My mom just went out of town today for a business trip and wouldn't be home when I got back. And, a certain time of the month.
It's a very cute and sweet book though with lots of animals and cute illustrations. Recommended.
This is a sweet little book at the beginning 2nd Grade reading level (AR 2.0). There are 229 words which are in a large font.
And I like this book because I can see getting years of use out it. Yes, it's a primer at the Second Grade reading level, but you could certainly read this book to toddlers and preschoolers, letting them hear the rhyme while you pause and name the animals, giving what information you know about them.
The whole theme of the book is how we mom's love our darlings. For mama and baby elephant:
Mama loves her little one. She stays with him night and day.
When her little one gets hot, she shoots a cooling spray
Besides elephants, there are bears, cats, whales, pandas, otters, ducks, deer, robins, lions, beavers, koalas, kangaroos, raccoons, dogs, bats, possums, and even wolves shown. So a nice list of animals to share.
Finally, the artwork by Lisa McCue is very nice. It's in that old, warm and friendly kid-style; and very appealing.
