I cannot stress enough how badly written this book was. There were so many capitalized words and excessive exclaimation points, it was like being yelled at ("This will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! The FIRST STEP of YOUR JOURNEY begins NOW!!!"... I wish I was exaggerating, but this is so literal it makes me want to cry). This book will not help you if you're having a nervous breakdown. No; actually, it will make you feel justified for having a nervous breakdown, and maybe another one after that. It will further your descent into the dark world of addiction because you just want to MAKE IT GO AWAY. It's like a verbal panic attack. So don't. Just don't.

This DBT-CBT workbook is a very good book for people who struggle with upsetting emotions and destructive behaviors. I like how the author talks to the reader, it's like you're in the therapy room with her. It is very engaging and sometimes very engaging because it really hits your issues. As much as I loved to read it because it is so interesting and describes me to a tee, sometimes it hit my issues so directly that it was very difficult to read. What I really liked is how she normalized things and made me feel normal and understandable given my life of trauma and pain. She humanized my experience and my destructive behaviors, even those that are hurtful to others, the "horrible, rotten things I've done". This is definitely a recovery book. It's all about understanding why we've done things, and why we feel this way, why we think this way. It is full of therapy. This workbook has really helped me through slumps in therapy and it has helped to really understand what therapists have been trying to tell me all along. It really hit home and made a lot of sense and pulled things together for me. Get a few boxes of kleenex because you'll need it. She really tells it like it is but it is done in a way that makes you understand yourself and accept yourself and gives you the zing you need to work through your stuff and to make life changes. It is really awesome. When she capitalized words, those are the words she REALLY wanted you to pay attention to and if you get into the flow of the book, it's almost like you can hear her speak, she is emphasizing things as she speaks. it is a very unique writing style but it makes it like you are in the group room with her. Most anyone who has problems with depression, anxiety, negative thinking, self-loathing, substance abuse, cutting, suicide, anger, aggression, and other types of feelings and behaviors should get a lot of help from this workbook. There’s many things in here that my therapist is using with other clients. You will definitely talk about this book with your therapist and support people because it is going to move you so much and get to the bottom of some of your issues.

I had good recommendations to read this but. my hatred for the style was too distracting and I gave up. I wish there was an ebook, and also that the author had had an editor.
