I thought the writing was clear, and the book, as a whole, was informative. As such, it seemed a good introductory summary on planets and stars. The design was simple if not a little sterile. I understand that Earth was described first, because it's our planet, but I would have liked the planets to have been discussed in order, to reinforce the order of the planets: Mercury, Venus, then Earth, Mars, etc. I imagine some "things" will have been discovered/changed since the book's publication (e.g., Did the spacecraft Galileo make it? Yes, it did! And Pluto, confusing as ever, is now considered a dwarf planet).

Have you ever been outside and find yourself looking up at the bright, twinkling stars at night? Were you ever curious as to how stars form, what they really look like, or even just wanted to learn more about our solar system? A Book About Planets and Stars by Betty Polisar Reigot presents a great introduction to kids about astronomy and the nine planets that make up our solar system. From Mercury to Pluto, each of the planets are detailed in size and distance from the sun, and contain many great, fun facts for readers to learn from. Some readers might even be interested to compare the amount of days or years each planet takes to complete their orbit around the Sun! Throughout this book, there are numerous charts and colorful photographs that have been actually taken from NASA space probes, which help guide readers through many concepts such as the Big Bang theory as well as the birth of stars.

This is a good yet challenging book for primary grades, especially, because although there is much content and information, it is still a book that is appropriate for them to read. Also, the many pictures and photographs in this book will quickly capture a reader’s attention because it is very real and colorful.

This is a very useful book for teachers to use when they teach their students a specific unit about the solar system and planets, because it contains a lot of material that is both essential and fun for students to know and understand. From black holes to supernovas, there are enough facts here to make an astronomer out of even the youngest of minds. This is a must read for those who want to find out about the wonders of our solar system and the stars beyond!
