If she were granted three wishes, timid piano teacher Tess Collier would take only two: to wed David Bannister and mother his darling daughter. But David was glorious and virile, making Tess feel old-fashioned and drab by comparison. Never would she bask in the Bannisters' golden glow....

Yet David watched his lonely little girl blossom under Tess's warm tutelage--and he magically granted Tess's two wishes! Tess began to sparkle inside--but David's pure pragmatism left her wanting. For her glittering marriage could never be gold ... unless some sweet sorcery granted her David's love.

Patricia Ann Kay (born March 7, 1937), also known as Trisha Alexander and Ann Patrick, is an American bestselling author of romance novels and women's fiction. She has authored more than 50 books, with four million copies published in 18 countries

Patricia Ann Kay was born on 7 March 1937 in a small town in northeastern Ohio, USA, where she raised along with three younger sisters. She considers herself a very lucky woman. The family didn’t have a lot of money, but she says that didn’t matter, because what they did have was worth more than money — a happy home. Her parents had a good marriage and they doted on their four daughters. That upbringing is reflected in the stories she writes. As readers all over the world have discovered, her books are filled with warmth and love of family.

Pat has lived in upstate New York, Northern Alabama, Southern California, and Stockholm (Sweden), and since 1969, in Houston, Texas with her husband. She says that no matter where she’s lived, she’s found that people everywhere are the same and want the same things: love and committed relationships. The marriage has three terrific grown children. They currently share their home with two longhaired cats, and a backyard filled with squirrels, birds, and other critters. Her hobbies and other interests include reading, walking for exercise, going to the movies and the theater, swimming, and traveling.

In 1990, Pat sold her first romance novel to Silhouette. Since then, more than four million copies of her novels have been published in eighteen different countries.

Tess’s life is calm and happy; when she meets the Bannister family nothing changes apart from her daydreams. When Leah Bannister dies in a terrible car accident, she can’t help but feel sorry for Francesca, David and Leah’s daughter who can’t seem to move out of her grief. When David comes to her with a proposition she knows what she wants to do but will it be too hard to bear?
Tess’s character is complex and the reader can only start to appreciate that towards the end of the book. She devotes herself to a man, who is not particularly available, with so little thought of her own well-being. David comes across as both weak and selfish but somehow still likable.
The book hooked me and I was desperate for a happy ending but it took a lot of effort to get there. I found the story a little unbelievable at times but I still enjoyed it. Despite my misgivings about their rather annoying lack of communication, I did become emotionally attached to the characters.

Characters are very immature

From the beginning you are told that the characters are older adults, mid to late thirties. In actuality, they act like a bunch of middle schoolers. There is a lot of 'oh he didn't love me, he will never love me the way I want him to ' going on in the heroines head and almost as much being thought by the hero, but they never talk to each other. The storyline is so so. There are a lot of things mentioned (his daughters Spring Fling at school, in which said daughter has a significant part, but it is never mentioned again... Also, David's boss invited them to dinner, never mentioned again... Bbq at her best friends house for July 4th, only mentioned, no follow up. The author would mention events and then skip two or three days and pick back up with Tess's immature drivel. Not a fan. Won't be reading more.
