Exploring and Mapmaking: Science and Discovery

Rate this book
This series of cassettes on Science & Discovery recreates one of history's most successful journeys -- 4,000 years of scientific efforts to better understand the physical world. Science has often challenged and upset conventional wisdom of accepted practices; these are the stories of vested interests and independent thinkers, experiments and theories, change and progress. Aristotle, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Darwin, Einstein, and many others are featured. Narrator Edwin Newman is a celebrated journalist, author, and lecturer. He was for 35 years a television jouranlist for NBC News, and he's familiar to millions as a moderator of presidential debates.

Short book, I do know that most of the stories in this book were only to highlight the discoveries and give a general story of Mapmaking. But I guess I was hoping for a much longer tale, Still loved the book, left me wanting more.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It described the race to the north and south poles. I always found that exciting. It also described the various ways that navigation was performed, its difficulties and the various map types, their advantages and distortions.

For a good book on exploring, I recommend "The Ice Balloon: S. A. Andrée and the Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration" by Alec Wilkinson. This is the type of exploring mentioned in this audiobook.

I might read this book again.

A good short audiobook covering exploring and mapmaking (from classical greece to the age of exploration, primarily). Obviously not comprehensive or in depth, but does a good job of providing references for additional research. Piques your interest, includes details of a few specific experiments and incidents, and encourages you to explore more.

Listened to this book: some interesting back-stories of how we physically got across the globe, but it was a bit dry
