Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky

Rate this book
Volodymyr Zelensky captivated the world when his country was invaded by Russia in February 2022. His appearances were accompanied by countless inspiring statements. But there's a single one that informs Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: "We are all simple people."

Jessie Kanzer sees Zelensky as a Spiritual Leader for Our Times. As a native Russian speaker (like Zelensky himself), she picks up on the deep philosophical ramifications behind his words. Rich and yet easy-to-read, the life lessons in Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky are accessible and wise, and are more about starting where you are than about war.

Each chapter begins with the lesson and wraps up with "Tips from Ze". Readers will see how Zelensky handled his much-criticized background as a comedian when he came into elective office. The tips include spreading graciousness and acknowledging that it's not "all about you" to erase differences in backgrounds.

Kanzer herself has a bit part in Zelensky's life story, acting in one of his movies filmed in the States. She's a self-described "spiritual nerd" who followed Zelensky long before he stood before a blue and yellow backdrop on the national stage. She writes, "What is so incredible about our man Volodymyr is that his belief in himself stems not from seeing himself as special, but from seeing himself as ordinary and from knowing there is great power in this ordinariness."

Lol, I remember giving my eyes the most thorough workout ever at that 'inner goddess' thing (here: Fifty Shades of Grey). And now, this! An inner Zelensky, no less!

Right when I was hoping to keep keeping my inner world pristine and parasite-free!

It's, ugh, being marketed as

This book picks up on the deep philosophical ramifications behind Zelensky’s words. The life lessons within this title are accessible, wise, and are more about starting where you are than about war.

Like, I'm sorry, what lessons? Like, do we want (or even need?) those lessons? Deep philosophical ramifications? And here I sort of thought he was just out of it, for some possibly chemicals-related reasons...

Sun Tzu famously said, “An evil man will burn his own nation to the ground to rule over the ashes."

Although he never met Zelensky, he got this monster’s number and knows Zelensky is the last person any individual of character would wish to emulate.

I was hoping for more of a deep dive into Zelensky's life and leadership style. We get a bit of that, but for the most part, this is a self-help book loosely based on the author's perception of Zelensky. She's quite swoony for him and gushes over him. It's okay...I have a little crush on him, too.
I did enjoy the section where she talks about servant leadership. Zelensky is a servant first, a humble leader and a simple man of the people.
There were some other good things in the book, but nothing I didn't already learn from following him directly on social media.

Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky, by Jessie Asya Panzer is mostly a self-help manual based on her interpretations of his speeches and career choices. It is both superficial and very repetitive. The same material is reworked in several chapters. Zelensky may say he is ordinary, and the author concludes that therefore anyone can achieve what they choose. I think Zelensky is highly unusual and one of those rare leaders that appears when a country is most in need. I would have liked so much more depth as to the people who influenced him and his upbringing. Someday someone will write the definitive biography and readers will have much to learn. This is not it.

"Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky" is part biography and part self-help book. I continue to be amazed at what Volodymyr Zelensky has been able to do for his people and how he has led them through this unexpected-- and unwanted-- invasion.

Jessie Asya Kanzer wrote enthusiastically about her subject. She shared anecdotes about Zelensky that I certainly had not heard.

I think perhaps the book could be pared down a bit. Several chapters sounded to me as if I'd reached the end of the book. Maybe I just realized that I have no inner Zelensky-- only President Zelensky has one of those. I think history will remember him as an exceptionally gifted man.

I was amazed at the sudden and powerful image of leadership Zelensky exhibited on the world stage. Who was this man and how did he, a comedian, possess such strong leadership skills?

Kanzer says we can learn many valuable life lessons from Zelensky, lessons that do not depend on a positive outcome. His moral clarity is remarkable, she says, and his example can serve us no matter what is happening in our lives. She explores a number of topics, giving Zelensky's view and how they are meaningful to life. Identity based on what you do and not on your ethnicity, for example. Using your ability, not letting others stop you by setting limits. Having faith in yourself, believing an ordinary person can achieve great things. Serving others with humility, living your purpose, and speaking truth are a few more.

I like this book. While the focus is on one individual, to message is to all of us. Ordinary people can be extraordinary when called upon. I do wish there had been more information about Zelensky's formative experiences and possible mentors.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Although this book ( or man!) is not perfect there are smart takeaways that could benefit everyone:

*Just because you don't have specific background for a job doesn't mean you can't do it (Zelensky went from comedian/actor to Ukrainian President)
*Give people the truth and let them chose to process/react for themselves.
*Think about the next generation, not the next election.
*There is no point in staying for the sake of staying.
*Be strong. No matter how difficult it is today we must remember that there will always be tomorrow.

Clearly the author is enamoured by Zelensky, as many people are... But he himself emphasizes he is just a ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances and maybe that is the biggest takeaway.

This is a book that could stimulate a lively discussion about the leadership of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Jessie Asya Kanzer begins with a note that his last name ends with a double “y” which he prefers as it’s the way it would be spelled in Ukraine, opposed to one “y” in Russia.

She also explains that for years, she called herself “Russian” until Vladimir Putin turned it into a “icky” word. Her family moved from Riga, Latvia to Brooklyn, NY when she was young. She describes herself as the Soviet “Asya Brofman” and Americanized “Jessie Kanzer.”

She writes about the leader, Zelenskyy, who had a law degree but decided to be a comedian actor. Then he was elected as the Ukraine President and became an inspirational leader. He calls himself the “servant of the people” appealing to “ordinary” folks.

He said, “You don’t need experience to be president. You just have to be a decent human being.” The author notes, “It doesn’t mean he didn’t make mistakes.” He was challenged by Trump when he was asked to help find dirt on Hunter Biden. He also figured early on that he could have a chat with Putin to settle the war. However, Zelenskyy has an exceptional talent for connecting with people. “We are not the ones who started this war…but we are the ones who have to finish it.”

Kanzer calls herself a “spiritual interpreter.” The book takes Zelenskyy’s wisdom and relates it to the reader sporadically with hope, faith, and love. This is where one finds their “inner Zelenskyy.” I wish she used his leadership to relate to our divided country and how powerful it would be to have a speaker that could unify the two parties.

The book is quick to read with some parts repeated in different ways. In closing, she said, “The bulk of us have not had a leader of Zelenskyy’s caliber in a very long time, if ever in our lifetimes.” This came across to me as a strong statement which would be debatable.

My thanks to St. Martin’s Essentials and NetGalley for allowing me to read this advanced copy with an expected release date of October 24, 2023.

👁👁 Won in a giveaway 👀

This was a wonderful read. I didn't know a whole lot about Zelensky, I must admit but I am now intrigued by him. No matter what side you lean towards in the Russian-Ukrainian war, Zelensky is so wise beyond his years, keeps a good, upbeat attitude and is humble (which can be rare in some leaders). There are way too many good quotes in this book, so I'll just add this one "We lose our energy constantly, as we scroll through our phones and computers, grim headline after grim headline-or, say, when we get stuck in a social media vortex, comparing and contrasting and feeling not so great afterward. All day long our precious energy trickles out of us as we don one mask or another, pretending to be grander or more competent or something other than what we are." How very true for some people. Zelensky never loses who he is, never loses focus and never loses his head in his speeches. Instead of being hot headed and screaming about war, he talks about people coming together, rebuilding, not losing hope. That's an attitude I would get behind and fully respect. I really enjoyed learning more about him (and will certainly research him more). This book was lighthearted and well written. I want to thank the author, Jessie Asya Kanzer, St. Martin's Essentials, Goodreads and to Zelensky, himself for my ARC of this book. I most definitely enjoyed reading this and recommend it. Happy reading. 💗💜🩷 (as of right now, there's still a giveaway for this book for anyone who is interested!)

Favorite Quote: "N/A-ARC"

BOOK INFO:
Publisher - St. Martin's Essentials
Author - Jessie Asya Kanzer
Page Count - 240
Format - Paperback (ARC copy)
Genre - Nonfiction
Title(s) - Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky
Audience - NA 18+

Summary: Writing about a historical event after the fact (Evacuation of Dunkirk) is tedious but certainly doable; AI will probably handle the task in a few more years. But having the courage to put ink to paper when said historical event (Russia-Ukraine War) has yet to be decided takes a lot of moxie, and it is that quality that Author Jessie Asya Kanzer displays for 200+ pages.

Former Actor/Comedian Volodymyr Zelensky was dismissed as a noncontender for the Presidency of Ukraine since his career as a "funny-man" could never prepare him for the rigors of running a country. No one was laughing when this nobody-soundly defeated billionaire Russian-backed media tycoons and the pontifications of the "Experts."
Putin Took notice of this and feared another gain was in the offing for NATO and the EU invading on 24 February 2022, calling their actions an "exorcise." Zelensky was not fooled but knew his country was facing an uphill battle, disadvantaged at every turn in manpower, weapons, and money.

Each chapter's theme begins with a prompt from the embattled President, giving an example of "humility," "Faith," and "simplicity" in the face of overwhelming odds. At the same time, Kanzer follows this up with challenges to herself and the readers to march forward, channeling our "Inner Zelensky," whether that is fighting street to street in Kyiv or mending a broken home right here in America's backyard.

Pros: Each chapter starts with a quote from Zelensky and line art that keeps the simplicity of this President down to earth. Tying in recent past events with the President helps keep readers aware of his developing character as Ukraine's wartime champion.

Cons: The chapters could have been longer for each lesson, with more points expounded upon. The Author comes off as a bit of a hero-worshipper.

Recommendation: Fans of Churchill, war documentaries, and contemporary social media world events. Also, if you enjoy freedom, keeping up to date on the struggles of our time is a good idea.

My Favorite Line: "N/A-ARC"

Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: Lessons We Can All Learn From an Unexpected Leader by Jessie Asya Kanzer is part self help manual based on the speeches and words of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. The newly elected president was relatively unknown until Ukraine was invaded by Russian forces in February 2022. The world becomes captivated by the inspiring statement he has made with a simple message, “We are all simple people.” Toted as a spiritual leader for our times by the author Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky seeks to highlight the deep philosophical ramifications and supplies life lessons from the president’s words and life. From his highly criticized background as a comedian as he was elected president, the author offers tips on spreading graciousness and how to lose the “it’s all about me” mentality and erase differences in backgrounds. Is Zelensky a man, a leader to look to for inspiration?
When I was given the chance to read this book, I only knew about Zelensky from what was highlighted in the media. I was curious about the man and why someone would want to emulate him because while many like him, there are many people who call him a “monster.” Kanzer herself has a small part in Zelensky’s life story as she had acted in one of his movies. She self-described herself as a “spiritual nerd” who followed Zelensky for a long time and her admiration for Zelensky is so evident. A lot of the tips are nothing new or groundbreaking. I feel a book about Zelensky as this point is a bit premature. Overall, Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky is nothing spectacular. I think it is a bit too early to hero worship Zelensky. If you are interested, read Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: Lessons We Can All Learn From an Unexpected Leader.

This is an informative book about Volodymyr Zelensky, President of the Ukraine, a man who wanted to be (and was) a comedian until he was thrust on a much larger stage. The lessons he teaches by being humbly himself are quite valuable:

- How to be a person of integrity, humility, authenticity and truth, strong enough in your own sense of self and your inner moral compass to do the next right thing no matter the situation.

- How to garner support for your position by being open, vulnerable, and identifying common values and goals.

- How to communicate with others openly, honestly, and without regard to your own ego. The goal is what matters, not your ego.

- How to inspire others to unite for a common goal, believe in the impossible, and to each take an active role in making the impossible, possible.

We live in very interesting, challenging, and troubling times. In my humble opinion, we all have a responsibility to do our part in making them better, making the world better. I didn't know much about Volodymyr Zelensky before Russia attacked Ukraine. The author, Ms. Kanzer, a fervent (and sometimes fawning) fan of Zelensky, does. I'm glad she wrote this book.

My thanks to St. Martins Essentials for permitting me to read a DRC of this book via NetGalley. The book will be published October 24, 2023. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.

Drawing inspiration from an unexpected leader...

"Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky" by Jessie Asya Kanzer raises questions about its timeliness as an exploration of Volodymyr Zelensky's leadership during Ukraine's conflict with Russia. While Kanzer offers insights into Zelensky's philosophy, particularly his belief that "we are all simple people," some may argue that the book's publication feels hasty given the ongoing nature of events in Ukraine.

Kanzer's personal connection to Zelensky and her affinity for the Russian language lend authenticity to her admiration for the Ukrainian leader. However, the book, structured as a self-help guide, might be seen as lacking depth and containing repetitive elements.

The narrative could benefit from a more critical exploration of Zelensky's leadership in the context of today's divided world. It will more than likely leave readers questioning whether it's too soon to hero-worship Zelensky, given the varying opinions about his role in Ukrainian politics. "Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky" invites readers to ponder his leadership qualities but leaves room for debate on the appropriateness of this exploration at the current stage of world events.

a great read!

"Unlocking your inner Zelensky'' authored by Jessie Asya Kanzer is more than just a superficial exploration of Volodymyr Zelensky's captivating journey to international prominence. Kanzer's prose is engaging and skillfully conveys Zelensky's unique ability to maintain an approachable, down-to-earth persona while holding a prominent position on the global stage. The book is a deep dive into the multi-faceted character of the Ukrainian President, peeling back the layers to reveal the complexities beneath his public image. While the book occasionally revisits certain core concepts, this deliberate repetition serves to emphasize the profound significance of the leadership lessons presented from a variety of perspectives. Kanzer's work shines a brilliant light on the transformative potential of simplicity and authenticity for individuals and leaders, particularly in the context of pursuing freedom and ethical governance. Readers who immerse themselves in the pages of this book will not only be inspired but also equipped with a profound understanding of the enduring impact of leadership, as exemplified by Zelensky's remarkable journey and philosophy.

While for many years, I did not know who Zelensky was, he is a man whose name is now a household word. In this book, readers have a chance to learn more about him and his thinking.

Zelensky did not start out as a political aspirant. In fact, he was a comedian. Nonetheless, he became the president of his country and was called on to act during an incredibly difficult time.

In this book, the author shares a lot about herself as well as Zelensky. She gives readers a good insight into how Zelensky thinks and acts in the world, as well as what he values. In doing this, there are lessons for the reader to think about.

This book will encourage the reader to think about their own actions. Dip into the chapters; a few of them are titled How May I Serve?; Speak Truth to Everything; From Fear to Love; Create Faith and there are many more.

Note that the author once had contact with Zelensky before he was in politics. She clearly thinks very highly of him. Know this if that is bothersome this may not be the read for some.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press-St. Martin’s Essentials for this title. All opinions are my own.

Volodymyr Zelensky is not a person I even knew 3 years ago, let alone thought he would inspire such a great book of life lessons influenced by his profound wisdom during Russia's invasion. Yet this book is a fantastic proof of the most unexpected inspirations. Jessie Kanzer, the author, managed to correlate and translate many of Zelensky’s teachings and statements during the present war into something that can easily be relatable in your everyday life.

While the obvious focus of the book was the importance of his leadership, Kanzer presented this subject in a truly unique way considering the global spotlight on the Ukrainian president. I honestly see this book more than that; it's an invitation to embrace the extraordinary power within ordinariness. If you are a philosophy fan like me, you can definitely enjoy this read and think a bit more about the present world from the perspective of someone as unique at this time as Zelensky.

“Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: Lessons We Can All Learn From An Unexpected Leader” by
Jessie Asya Kanzer is a great read! Kanzer’s unique perspectives on the presidential figure and
the war in Ukraine are captivating and really allow the reader to delve into the issues at hand.
The reader can see, especially foreshadowed by the Zelensky quote at the beginning of each
chapter, how an ordinary man can become extraordinary under pressure and brutal
circumstances. I really like how I felt I got to see a side of Zelensky the media outlets may not
have showed the world. This book inspires each of us to look inside who we are and question
our purpose. I loved the idea that everything is possible and we have what we need to succeed
within us, which is very empowering. I would recommend this book because of its important
lessons; both shedding light on the politics involved and the inner work one can do in order to
become a better human. Well done!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 / 3.5 stars

I listened to the full audiobook while at work today. It was easy to follow and the narration was enjoyable. There's a little biography about Zelensky, a little more self-help advice on how to take Zelensky's admirable qualities and apply them to your life, and then the rest is pretty much the author fangirling. It's okay Jessie, I'm a fan too. 🫶🏻

There are a couple things that stood out to me more than others. Chapter 7 "Children As Guideposts" talks about leading in a way that puts future generations as the focus, rather than the immediate gain of money or power for oneself and the current generation. I also enjoyed the part about leading from a place of service to your country and people, rather than leading from a place of power. Unfortunately, I cannot recall in which chapter this is discussed.

I would have enjoyed a little more depth into Zelensky, but overall it's a good read and I appreciated the bits of humor thrown in.

3.5✨ rounded up because of who this book was about. The overall message was a good one (especially in these trying times) and the author provided good information and backstory of Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well as the war in Ukraine, and of course presented respectable reasons as to what makes an unlikely person like Zelenskyy a great once-in-a-lifetime leader. However, some things were repeated multiple times throughout the text and made the book feel stretched out much longer than it needed to be. Not to mention I felt very weird about Zelenskyy being referred to as “Ze” and “our man” most of the time. This made it read like the author was fangirling instead of providing an educational text like it for the most part should have been. It is cool though that the author did work with Zelenskyy in a movie, on which the narrator’s husband also worked on, so there were some neat little personal connections and anecdotes.

Such a riveting read that delves deep into the life and leadership style of one of the 21st century's most unexpected figures. Rather than just chronicling Zelensky's rise from a comedian to a president, Kanzer seamlessly weaves personal anecdotes, profound insights, and a touch of humor, making this more than just a biography. It becomes a guide on how to harness one’s unique qualities and experiences to lead with authenticity. I found myself thoroughly engrossed, occasionally chuckling, and frequently pausing to reflect on my own leadership potential. The book doesn’t merely extol Zelensky; it serves as a mirror for readers to recognize their own potential. Kanzer's storytelling prowess shines, and the end result is a compelling narrative that pushes us to think outside the leadership box. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to unlock their own inner leader.

Volodymyr Zelensky has captivated the world with his simple ordinariness. He calls himself an ordinary man. A simple people.
I loved that this is a “start where you are”, type of book. You don’t have to be extraordinary to do what needs to be done.

Is it heroic? In this day and age, yes, it is. I have been impressed with the man and his countrymen.

A man who was laughed at when he traded the comedy stage for politics. But it has worked out. I admire strong leaders who don’t need to threaten or intimidate others to feel big.

There is so much to learn from this book and I am so glad I read it.

Very inspiring!

Volodymyr Zelenskyy was an actor and comedian before he became president of the Ukraine. But he isn’t just any president, having risen during the most recent Russian invasion of Ukraine. Even with the difficulty of leading Ukraine, Zelenskyy has shown passion for all the freedoms many of us sometimes take for granted. As Jessie Kanzer states in the book, Zelenskyy isn’t simply a great wartime politician, he is a profound philosophical leader of our generation. Having been underestimated by many, I’m glad to see a book dedicated to the lessons that we can learn from a leader who fully inhabits his purpose.

The author shares valueable leadership lessons from the Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who rose to the challenge during adversity and showed to the world an exceptional leadership. To quote the author- "What's being asked of us is not perfection but intention, not superiority but humanity," and so having an intention will make all the difference- in our personal lives, community, and the broader world. If everyone of us make small impact on our immediate environment, then the world will become a better place to live in.
