A week in paradise—with the ex-girlfriend from Hell.
Winifred Martin has a new job, newfound confidence, and a glamorous new lover. In fact, after moving on from a heart-wrenching breakup, Win has a whole new life.
Benedikte (Benny) Fiske has also sold up and moved on, too—to a wonderful Greek island where she can invest in herself again and find peace and quiet.
When Win arrives at a luxurious boutique hotel for a much-anticipated week of sun and sex with her new girlfriend, she is stunned to find her ex-girlfriend, Benny, is the proprietor. Benny is equally shocked to find Win doing so well and looking so gorgeous...far too gorgeous. She’s convinced Win is wasting her time on this vacuous new lover. In fact, she has a lot of opinions on Win and her new life—the strongest being Benny should be back in it.
Nestled in the beautiful Aegean on an island blessed by Eros, the God of Love himself, Benny finds no lack of inspiration in her quest to woo back her lost love. Her methods, however, are the stuff myths are made of.
Gill McKnight is Irish but spends as much time as possible in Lesbos, Greece, which she considers home. She can often be found traveling back and forth between Greece and Ireland in a rusty old camper van with her rusty wee dog. Gill enjoys writing, roses, and by necessity DIY.
Oooo, i LOVED this book. it was perfect, or i was in the perfect state of mind for it. But i'm pretty sure i'll love reading this book at any time. Reviews said it was humorous, but i didn't expect to be laughing out loud as much as i did. And yet it still managed to have some hot love scenes in it. not a ton, mind you. this book will stand out for it's humor and story telling, more so than being 'hot'. but the author still serves that up to some extent.
Benny and Win broke up 3 years ago. then -poof-, Win shows up at a hotel that benny now owns on a greek island. All hell breaks loose as the greek gods themselves seem to be conspiring towards some end. I especially liked the stories or myths that the inhabitants of the island told about eros and psyche and magical pools of water. nice touch that.
one reviewer said they didn't like the character, benny, but i thought she was great. she was the comedic star of what could be a movie. sweet and blundering and intense all at once. Win, benny's ex, was more of the cynical humor of the story. but really, they all -supporting roles included- played a good part. The character development was well done. I can tell you where they came from, what they did for a living, what they looked like... they were defined in a manner that adds to the story; allowing you to picture them as though you're watching it all happen. for me that's the biggest part of a good story. Another part is editing. at no point while reading was i distracted by poor grammar or typos or icky sentence structure. if there were flaws, they didn't stick out to me.
This is the first book i've read by Gill McKnight. not sure what took me so long to find her. but i'll be sure to read much more from her in the near future.
writing/editing: 5 stars character development: 5 stars hot and steamy: 4 stars ending that doesn't suck: 5 stars
3 1/2 Stars. I'm a big fan of McKnight's paranormal books. Now, I thought it was time I read some of her romances. Overall, I thought this was pretty good and quite funny at times. The story is about exes Benny and Win. They have not seen each other in 3 years, until one morning Win checks in with her new girlfriend, at Benny's resort. Benny wants Win back, Win just wants a vacation. First I have to say, Benny drove me nuts! I could not believe everything she did to Win and Win's girlfriend. I could not believe Win did not strangler her. Win just kept forgiving Benny's bad behavior and it got worse. I believed Benny loved Win, but I don't know if she deserved her. McKnight described Win very well, but she never really went into detail about Benny. I know she was tanned, but besides that I had trouble picturing her in my mind. I loved the setting and I thought the storyline flowed well for being on an island the whole time. I was also happy with the ending. I just think I would have liked the book more if Benny wasn't so crazy and down right frustrating.
The novel is based on the funny, sweet, sexy character of Benedikte (Benny). When Win, Benny's ex girlfriend, end up with a gorgeous and famous girlfriend in the hotel Benny owns in a paradisiac mediterranean island, Benny goes totally nuts with jealousy because indeed she still loves her. This originates a series of funny events because Benny, usually a moderate person, becomes clumsy with too many emotions, throwing herself in all sort of troubles. Fortunately the sincerity of Benny's feelings and the magic of the island will help. Benny's character is really alive with sweetness and misconveyed energy, making the reader both laugh and share her feelings, wishing her luck. One of the best romances I read.
Reading it a second time with bookclub buddie D. and it remains a hoot. I love the athmosphere of the Greek island resort and the banter between the various characters. Gill McKnight paints us a very pretty picture. Humor, a little bit of angst and a rekindled love affair smack dab in the Aegean Sea. What's not to love?
3.5 stars. McKnight is the one author I'm always amused by AND the one author whose leads border on a creepy level at times...Erosistible was one of those.
When McKnight isn't exploring dark themes in her novels, she writes amazing, over the top comedies and does so better than just about anyone. Her leads are aggressive, smart, and witty as hell. Sometimes I love it and in a few cases I don't. I know Erosistible is a comedy, even to a farcical level but even keeping that in mind Benny raised my hackles and not in a good way...though, the scene of her standing in the hotel hallway in the middle of the night blowing a whistle just might stay with me awhile for a good chuckle.
I do lean towards recommending this book. The imagery and setting of the hotel actually made me feel I was there and the comedy is very good. Win, as well as the other characters, are great and the pacing of the novel is quick. It's solidly written and there's an element of fun not found often. I also loved that Win used to have weight on her and Benny is/was completely body positive as her partner.
As a side note, I was thinking about why Benny bugged me since so many of McKnight's other books have similar protagonists. I realize that in this and in the author's first werewolf book, the leads are super aggressive and fairly immature against their love interests who ARE mature and do not want any of what the other is giving. In contrast, looking at Ambereye, Green Eyed Monster, and Silver Collar, those had pretty aggressive leads, too, but in those cases the other love leads, who again are usually more mature, were just as wily and into the fray so it worked. They welcomed the challenge and had interest in the other. No creepy element. I'm probably overthinking this.:P...anyway, McKnight is definitely an author to read...just know that some of her books are better than others, at least for this reader.
Wow - I don't think that I have read a full length novel so fast I my life.
The characters and situations pull you from one scene to another, at a wonderful pace. The writing is very humourous, with zingers flying off the page and set pieces that almost read like an episode of "Fawlty Towers".
Loved that Benny was just so awful, favourite passage is very early on in the book but set the whole tone
"“My God, Win.” Then, “Where’s your other half?”
“She…she’s paying the taxi driver.” Win whipped off her
sunglasses and blinked stupidly at Benedikte Fiske, her ex-
girlfriend of many years.
“I meant you’d lost weight,” Benny stated abruptly"
Had me snorting with laughter from the start.
Thoroughly enjoyable read, look forward to reading more of this author's work.
4.5... A really fun (ear-to-ear--grin-laugh-out - loud type) read. The smidgen of Greek mythology (though not told properly) didn't hurt either. Story of finding love, making mistakes, moving on, self-discovery and finding that some things that seem lost were just hidden behind emotional rubble.
This is a delightful lesbian romance but it is not your usual reunion scenario! Set on the Isle of Lesbos, the descriptions of the Greek landscapes and buildings are detailed and visually deep. The conversations between the characters are witty and natural. The "approach" taken by Benny to win back the love of her life would certainly not be considered conventional or even wise making her actions more repellent than attractive. But I found I couldn't put it down until I knew what was going to happen. I think you'll be surprised at the twists and turns of the plot but I know you'll have fun reading this book.
Run Win run!!! So I had to expand. The writing was good as was the editing but the only person I liked in this book was Win. Benny was just a mess and I would not trust her as far as I could throw her. The ending as written was not the real end I think as if the story was to carry on I think we would find Win happy..with someone else and Benny left alone and lonely. That I think would be the reality as was my three stars..under three for content as I did not find much funny either in the story. Bad start to the new year
I’ve had this one for some time (paperback; not ebook but that was the only option here). I knew it gotten good reviews. I “know” Gill from the Lesbian Fiction Forum and figured if she could write great posts there, she could probably pull off a novel. ;) Yet, the first time I started this, I stopped when I realized it had multiple POVs. I just didn’t have the energy to deal with it. Most times multiple POVs are used by inexperienced writers and they flub it up badly. But I was in the mood to try it, so I told myself to suck it up and get on with it.
Boy am I glad I did. While once in a while the POV switches confused me, for the most part they were handled well. There’s a lot you can do with multiple viewpoints, if you know what you are doing, and Gill does. But beyond that, this is just plain well written. It’s laugh out loud funny, which I wasn’t even expecting. This isn’t just a Romance, it’s a romantic comedy. Clever, witty, funny as heck. Win and Benny are at their best when they are screaming at each other.
The setting is a Greek island and oh does that become part of the story. From the people to the mythology to the very tides and geology. It’s not that the story couldn’t have been set elsewhere, but all the metaphors would have to have been different. Gill made this setting work for the story. It reinforces the themes and even assists the humor.
The plot is no big secret. Benny works at a hotel, her ex-girlfriend, Win, whom she cheated on, arrives with her new celesbian love interest (“a world music version of Abba” lol ) and a slimmed down body. She appears to have it all. Benny goes ballistic. But she has changed, too. You know how it will end, but not the route they’ll take to get there. Amira’s not a particularly well rounded character, but Ioanna, Benny’s business partner, is a stitch. Hijinks ensue as Benny tries to sabotage the relationship and win Win back.
Everything makes sense and is used to move the story along: why Win lost weight and got fit and how that didn’t give her the self-esteem she expected it to, why she was with the self-absorbed Amira, Benny’s friendship with Dimitri, her past CCTV business, Eros’s pool, the city sunken by an earthquake, and ruins, everywhere ruins.
This is the first book in ages that made me late for work because I couldn’t put it down. I’m psyched that there are more Gill McKnight books out there for me to read. I hope you’re writing, Gill!
It was good, I wanted to like it more, but I just couldn't.
Something that bothered me was the writing style. The author used way too many metaphors to explain stuff like their relationship. Sometimes metaphors can facilitate the readers understanding and create beautiful prose, but this was just pretentious.
Even though the characters felt real with personalities and flaws of their own (even supporting ones) you could still see the author's writing style in their speech, which was a turn off.
I really liked Benny's character. After knowing what she did, I thought I wouldn't like her and be more enticed by Win's character. But it was the other way 'round. Benny was so simple. She wanted Win and burned with jealousy of Amira who had her. Because of that she did whatever was possible to separate those two, thus creating a mess.
So, at the beginning I understood why the characters treated Benny the way they did, however they extended that treatment throughout the book, making me feel sorry for naïve Benny who only intentions were to be with the love of her life...
So much for buying a book for accident... and contrary to some other reviews I saw, it wasn't all that funny. It actually hurt me the way Benny was treated, and Win's personality threw me off and made me not enjoy the book as much as I could have.
Gill McKnight has written a funny second chance romance about a couple that had been together and in love when one partner is caught cheating. Years go by and they meet again at a resort in Greece owned by the cheater. Her ex has shown up for a romantic vacation with a beautiful pop artist and the cheater, having never fallen out of love, is jealous. Chaos ensues as the cheater tries to get her love back. It’s funny, heart warming, and I’ve read it several times. I highly recommend it.
Absolutely magnificent! I enjoyed a ton this one! The characters are all lovable, charismatic, fun, some of them are a bit lunatic! The story was exquisite! I laughed quite a lot with this one! I almost cried with certain scene too. My goodness, highly recommend it! This title goes to my top 15 favorite books!
Worthy of your time! Granted me loud laughs. I loved the story. And it’s not the best of this author whose writings and storytelling have become tremendously skilled in more recent books.
I suppose that the intent was a light and mostly fun romance, kind of a farce/romance with the perk of happening in Greece. However, it didn’t work for me since I didn’t find it funny and I didn’t get a glimpse of the Greece I know, only of a resort in Lesvos. The characters are either rather shallow (e.g. Win for whom change means a diet and starting to sleep around) or even cartoon-like with Amira as the culprit. The improbable plot also didn’t help.
This was an adorable book! The characters were funny and Machiavellian at the same time. The background scenery helped as well. All in all, a job well done!
