I won't say this book was of no use to me because I did learn some new things, but I felt it was too slanted towards the author's own views. For instance, he was very keen on the drug Metformin, and he was all for gastric surgery. My own doctor would not be. This is clearly an American authored book though.
An informative read in an accessible format. Exercise and diet are the two major factors in preventing/reversing prediabetes. It was interesting to read of prediabetes links with stress and depression. The book was published in 2009 so may be due an updated edition. It was specifically aimed at the US reader so much of the book was irrelevant to me in the UK. The author did seem to have something of an obsession with bariatric surgery as a form of treatment.
I’ve got to educate myself and make some adjustments for a prediabetes diagnosis, and I started with this. It seemed fitting! While there were some basic tidbits, overall, I found the author condescending and, in many ways, fat-phobic and pitching outdated information, mainly if you are menopausal or post-menopausal. He also leaned heavily on medication and gastric bypass, which seems to reveal his own bias rather than solid medical advice that reflects current best practices.
If you're starting from 0 with pre/I/II diabetes, this is an excellent place to start. Rubin's information is clear, concise, and light, which is a relief when you first face a lifestyle altering condition.
There's a lot of information to absorb, but like may of the so-called "Dummies" books (such a misnomer for what they provide) Prediabetes walks you through the concepts and makes more advanced books intelligible. Worth the dollars if you're starting out.
