Eve was shocked — she inherited only if she married within six months of her father's death. Worse, the man her father's will named had ruined her reputation three years ago. But the alternative, living in seclusion with her grandmother, was even less tempting. Eve had to get to know Marcus better.
Quickly realized the entire plot is flawed beyond redemption.
Marcus never pieces together that Angela and Eve know each other before the party at Brooklands. That’s actually not possible. Eve’s behavior with Marcus at the fair created a “scandal”. A scandal so bad that Eve’s “soon-to-be” intended, Leslie, drops Eve and marries Angela. Marcus knew about her relationship to Leslie at the fair. “And you are betrothed, are you not - or about to be - to Leslie Stephenson?” And he certainly knew that Angela later married Leslie.
But Marcus thought Eve and Angela wouldn’t either know each other or of each other? Can’t fix that plot hole.
The scandal is so horrible Eve is sent away. But Marcus’ mother had never heard about it. And didn’t think Marcus and Eve had ever met before the reading of the will?
Eve’s Dad and Marcus are extremely close business associates and near neighbors, but Marcus never met Eve before the fair? And despite being well dressed, he mistook her for a prostitute?
And, at the end of the day, Marcus is unlikeable. He did try to seduce Eve at the fair and left her to the consequences. He’s unredeemable.
Stopped reading at the party. Skimmed to the end. Donated.
