Finding the perfect font is tricky, and in an increasingly digital age, the options seem endless. This handy volume takes the mystery out of font selection by displaying the entire alphabet and numerals for 1000 unique typefaces, making it easy for designers€”or anyone who works with type€”to find the perfect face for any job. An easy-to-understand icon system organizes hundreds of fonts, making searching and cross-referencing easy. And, an additional feature, color photos offer real-world examples of many of the fonts in action, showing how they translate from screen to final layout. Accessible and thorough, 1000 Fonts is an indispensable tool for novice and expert designers alike.
I'm an admitted font freak - as a graphic designer, you quickly learn to love fonts and you're forever looking for "the font" that gives a given piece you're designing the right "voice". This is a nicely organized compendium of categories and a wide selection of fonts - both old and newer - that fit each (such as Billboard and Poster, Fun, Illustrative, etc.). One thing I DIDN'T necessarily like is that the categories are too broad - they could have been more specific as is a similarly-themed (but thinner!) book by Timothy Samara, "Type Style Finder". However, the samples in this book are larger and it's easier to use as a font identification source. It's still a very worthwhile purchase and I'm quite glad to add this to my typography arsenal!
Very useful collection of fonts with tons of illustrative examples. Includes short introduction to fonts and typefaces, grouping of fonts in categories, details of typeface history and use, glossary. Easily used as an encyclopedia to home in on the font that fits your purpose.
I love this book. I checked it out at work, and I wish that I owned a copy. It has been amazingly helpful and inspiring this term as I work on design projects and text layouts. So many typefaces...I dream of the day when I have access to some of the faces featured in this book...
My only complaint with this book is the page size (too small) and the trim size (doesn't fit with all the other books on my shelves).
