The trials are over. The real game is about to begin.
With grit, intelligence, and a stroke of luck, Gunnar passed his guild trials and has been granted the opportunity to be the champion of a goddess. He now has the opportunity to form a faction of his own, join a powerful guild, and make a name for himself in the city of Thailen. But he has also made some bitter enemies, including an old nemesis who is bent on destroying everything he has accomplished.
To survive this cutthroat world of thieves and assassins, Gunnar will have to be smarter and stronger and more ruthless. Learning some dark magic might not hurt either.
But always lingering with him is the mystery surrounding his arrival in the realms of Pantheon. Pursuing the answer could change everything. Or it could easily destroy him.
Don't miss the exciting second installment of the Pantheon Online series! An action-packed LitRPG for fans of The Good Guys/Bad Guys and The Ripple System.
I've had the first book for over a year and picked up the second book in December, but didn't put it on my TBR until February. But for one reason or another, I kept putting off starting the books until now. I really enjoyed Klopfenstein's 4-book Shadow Watch series, which is why I added this series to my list, but having never read a LitRPG novel, I had no idea if I would end up liking it. My husband is a huge RPG fan, but while I enjoy watching him play, I've never wanted to play the games myself--I'm always afraid of making the wrong decision and I do not have the hand-eye coordination to do battle scenes or navigate climbing up walls. So I wasn't sure about this one.
Final verdict? Well, I should probably wait for the third book to come out and see how satisfied I am with the ending, but if the third book is as good as the first two and concludes in a satisfying way, then I can safely say that I am a fan of this genre--at least the way Klopfenstein writes it! I'm on the author's news list and I've read that if all goes well, he plans other series in this universe. I hope all goes well, because I'm really enjoying this!
fast-paced action, intrigue, magic, mermaids, wyverns, second chances and the difficulties in trying to make the best of them, ... entertaining gameworld adventure that keeps you guessing about off-game/IRL as well. with plenty of quips and amusing references and curious characters and twists
Advancing in the game and getting stronger in their skills no matter what the cost may be the way for many players in Pantheon Online, but Gunnar wants more than that, wanting to be better than that, which makes him more appealing to the reader and to some other players as well. Not everyone likes his attitude, though, and he's bound to end up in trouble more often than not. The Crypt and its defenders become all the more central to Gunnar's in-game life as well.
The future Gunnar had envisioned in the Nighthawks Guild might not turn out quite as thought. His decisions right after and during the guild trial have consequences that carry much further than anticipated. The ragtag bunch of people he's surrounded himself with become all the more meaningful. The side quests he somehow ends up on have a tendency to take Gunnar to places and situations that give him ample opportunities to either die or develop skills. If you're falling off a cliff, you might as well try to learn to fly on the way down... or have allies that help in critical moments, if you've been good.
The lines between in-game and IRL occasionally blur, the glimpses into off-game intriguing. The attitude towards NPCs, the game mechanics, the beta phase streams' XP (experience points, not the smiley, though on second thought, probably both), the extensive world built by the developers with plenty of detail, the game availability in general... there are many things to fascinate the reader.
In this book we learn more about Em as well as about the mystery that surrounds Alex Keynes and the conditions that lead Jake into prison and Pantheon Online in the first place, though many questions remain and even more arise. What is truly going on? A good team to support is essential to surviving in ever-changing challenges, also knowing who you can trust ... if anyone - when many tables suddenly turn, is nothing what it seems? Keeps the reader guessing about who really stands where. Will whet the reader's appetite to learn more about it all in the next book. 4.5
Gunnar continues in his role in-game, receiving and completing quests with help from his friends and acquaintances. They face a variety of mystical creatures during their dangerous challenges. Well written with plenty of humour and sarcasm which I found very entertaining. I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily leave an honest review.
This is an excellent continuation of the series. The main character is not over powered. The characters are engaging. In addition there is a very interesting story that runs parallel to the fantasy world.hat Looking forward to reading book 3 in this series.
This series just keeps getting better as some real world starts to creep into the story. There is a lot more action in this episode as Jake (Gunnar) maneuvers his way from newbie to higher levels within the game. All is not as it seems so don't take anything at face value. Looking forward to the next one.
The whole “main character is being framed as a traitor” plot is pathetic. His captain, Nail? was with Gunner the entire time and refused to give Gunner any mission information. So the captain knows Gunner doesn’t have the necessary information, and the captain knows Gunner wasn’t physically present, and the captain knows Gunner is a fairly new, inexperienced and entirely too weak rogue to be able to execute such a large task. It’s obviously ridiculous that Nail could believe Gunner was the traitor. And then, even though many nighthawks contact Gunner, he doesn’t explain the truth to even one person. In my humble opinion, a huge illogical plot element is the worst writing mistake an author can make.
Very little action, except for the last few chapters, those were interesting. Otherwise, meh. The change of storyline was unexpected but poorly done. I'm still unsure as to what is really going on IRL in the book. Oh well, I am still going to get book 3.
Excellent !! No disappointments here, just madcap mayhem and some VERY satisfactory snark. I've already pre - ordered the third book in the series. Enjoy !!
