explained both Hardy and D. H. Lawrence's behavior, which was a relief.

Read chapters on gender and genre. The most interesting part of the genre chaper was the discussion of Hardy's narrator who acts almost like a bystander to events, presenting them with ambiguity and seeming lack of authorial knowledge.
