This is a step-by-step tutorial on drawing portraits (heads), aimed at starting artists.
Liked the way each step is illustrated; the only better set of explanations I've seen in a book about drawing was in Go Office's More How To Draw Manga Volume 1 The Basics Of Character Drawing, where the actual movement of the drawing tool (let's say pencil) is depicted and explained. The explanations were a bit lacking, in that the authors use terms such as "broad, bold strokes"; for a beginner as myself it was not very clear what I needed to do.
More about this book. Excellent structure, as the authors start with relatively simple elements of the face (nose, mouth, eye), and only then assemble them into the full structure of the face. They draw several persons, of different age, gender, and ethnicity. The authors cover multiple tools: pencil, charcoal, chalk, pen, etc.
Portraits in the book are simple and beautiful, and it concentrates mostly on drawing techniques. Generally, however, isn't any different from rest of the portrait drawing books. Hence, it doesn't have much to offer aside the basic stuff.
If you don't have the resources or access to an art school or instructor, this book is a very good choice for learning how to draw portraits. The lessons are clear, incremental, and simple enough for anyone with basic drawing skills to understand and benefit from. Recommended.
