In relation to other 95th sources of the era: Surtees is very thorough, but his narrative is not as engaging as Kincaid, not as forthright as Costello, and not as complete as Simmons. He, like Harris, seems to be writing more through a filter than need be. Surtees does offer a very unique, and appealing description of the campaign against Louisiana, which makes up for many of the other aggravating features in this work.
