In I Can Has Cheezburger? , Professor Happycat brought LOLcats to the wurld. Nao he has gone back to his lair for 200 all-new LOLcats that give all aspiring kittehs the lessons they need to take over teh world (or at least their hoomins).
A LOLcat is a picture of a cat with a funny, misspelled, caption. LOLcats are from the Internets and are full of win!!1!]
icanhascheezburger.com was founded in January 2007 and has been at the center of the worldwide LOLcat craze ever since. The same folks run failblog.org, graphjam.com, and other sites.
yes, i am the kind of person who finds this funny. when i was little, i never liked cats, only dogs. and then i got older and settled into this personality only to find it looooved cats. and now i am going to library school. and learning to crochet. so you know whats next - its no surprise. bring on the cardigans and the eyeglass-chain and the doilies and slipcovers and the nine stockings hung on the fake-fireplace mantel at christmas not for my children, no certainly not, but for fluffy and mittens and sparky and mr slibberty or whatever. what a cliche i shall become. what promise i once had. but i cant help it - these books amuse the shit out of me. the world is full of cute cats. and spinster librarians. bread and butter.
What is it that makes lolcat memes so funny [1]? The memes included in this book are fairly straightforward in nature. We have a photo containing one or more cats and some kind of funny caption. Yet this book is one of several in a series of officially released volumes from the owners of icanhascheezeurger.com, and I imagine the people have made a fair amount of money, to say nothing of popularity, concerning the popularity of their cat memes. So, what accounts for this popularity? I think a large part of it has to do with the fact that kittens are cute and that cats are endearingly funny creatures with odd habits and expressive faces. Indeed, their expressiveness appears at the core of the sort of communication that memes provide, as one would find much less enjoyment showing pictures of rocks with captions, given the lack of expressiveness of (most) rocks. One might even venture to say that it is the obvious limbic emotional connection that cats have with other cats and with ourselves that allows them to serve as ideal figures for memes like the ones found in this book, and we can be grateful to them for that.
The 200 memes included in this volume fall under the following categories: Bewar of menni danjurs, Charms to disarm, Do wut u want, Eat ur food. And ebbryone elses too, Impers- imparsen- copycat, Kill dem till they die from it, Know ur skillz, Lay down da law, Lurn noo technologies, Make allies...or nawt, Master ur emoshuns, See wut udders can't see, and Survive pointy fingers: deny, deny, deny. Given this scheme of organization, written in lolcat of course, we can see the themes of cats using their charm and cuteness to avoid trouble, seeking to fulfill their longings and wants, and developing their competence in certain areas. We also see the tendency of cats to behave as if there are invisible things around them that they are interacting with, a quality that human beings share in abundance as well. Included in this collection are happy cats, cute cats, sad cats, angry cats, and so on, their expressiveness adding to the poignancy or humor of the captions. All in all, this book is not a demanding read and is frequently a very enjoyable one.
One thinks, in reading this book (and others like it) that the lolcat phenomenon depends on several things. For one, the image credits at the back of the book reveal that there are a great many people who like taking pictures of their cats and setting humorous captions to them, something that continues to the present day (this book was written about a decade ago or so). In addition, this book required the aegis of a company devoted to cat memes as well as publishers and a large audience of readers. This book may best be seen as a coffee table book full of cute and funny cat pictures, but so long as that remains popular and worthwhile to people, one can imagine that books like this will continue to be printed. There are no doubt many people who do not find lolcats or their awkwardly spelled captions all that entertaining, but those sorts of people are not going to be reading (much less reviewing) this sort of book anyway. For those of us who do appreciate these pictures, we are reminded of the enjoyment of meme culture with others who are in on the joke and who appreciate the cuteness and quirkiness of cats.
This is another collection of images taken from the web site icanhascheezeburger.com with pictures of animals, mostly cats with captions that are often not very funny, and intentionally mispelled to imply a feline accent that somtimes makes them unreadable...but every now and then one will be very hilarious. However they are just as, actually even more accessable on the web site, so there is really no reason to buy or read this book.... but I did it anyway.... for the second time. My grandson loves to look at and read them.
I got this book as a bridal shower gift, and even my friends who aren't on the LOLcat train thought it was hilarious (bonus: a friend's cat is among the kittehs here). I laughed, I "awwww!"ed, I pestered my fiance with pictures of cute kittehs behaving badly and butchering the English language (and it made HIM laugh, too). This just might be the most important weapon I have in the fight to convince my cat-hating husband-to-be that we need a kitty in our home.
I didn't really pick up any tips on taking over the world, unless its being so cute that the world stops for me. Which really, isn't that a cat's true plan?
Yeah, yeah, I know there are hundreds of lolcats floating around the Internet, but it was fun to flip through them in this little book.
The entire book is hilarious, but these are my faves:
1) if u tink i noe respek u in deh mornin, den we just sleeps till deh afternoon (two cats are intertwined on a bed)
2) if you don't like my changes, i can always edit your face (a cat is sitting next to a propped up book)
3) and if you continue to bathe me in the sink, i will scratch u here, here, and here (a cat is lying across an anatomy book "clutching" a red pen and pointing to drawings of the human body)
If you get a chance, read it to brighten your day. It's like a greatest hits of lolcats.
How To Take Over the Wurld was even more fun and adorable packed into a short and enjoyable book than it's predecessor I Can Has Cheezburger?: A LOLcat Colleckshun. You'll laugh, you'll go awww and you will undoubtedly notice some of your own cat's behavior (or a cat you know). It's a great gift for cat and animal lovers - in fact it's pretty much a great gift for anyone who loves the adorable and the humorous, or for someone who could use a smile. My only complaint with these books - I wish they were bigger (in size), but still very fun!
Another funny winner. This one had several more of my favorite LOLs so that was a plus for me. It was slightly different in structure than the last one which had Professor Happycat teaching a class about basic LOL concepts. This one has very cute pictures about how to take over the world and groups pictures together accordingly. Each new 'chapter' has a new illustration that reveals the theme, such as "See What No One Else Can See." If you like icanhascheezburger.com, you'll like this.
And I am aware of the irony of reading this on the same day as The Day Without Cats on the interwebs.
I only read this because my mom bought it as a birthday gift for someone else.
And that's not necessarily cool, is it? I mean, reading someone else's book. Then that book becomes "used" and it's not nice to give used gifts to someone.
Oh well. I laughed for like ten minutes. That's like... $1 a minute for laughter.
OK, i'ts not a book you really "read", but it's hilarious! Really. Even my brother laughed out loud, he's not a cat person either. It's just a fun book to laugh at. The first book is cute too. (I can haz cheeseburger)
I absolutely love funny cat picture books; they always cheer me up when I have a bad day. This book is one of my favorites for leafing though on those bad days. Furthermore, my goddaughter really likes this particular book.
Professor Happycat brings us another hilarious book full of LOLcats. Great for fans of icanhascheezburger.com or anyone who needs a laugh. My favorite caption is : "Temper tantrums. I has them."
Quite funny (if you can get through the purposely butchered captions). A must for cat lovers. If you like this book you should read the Cat Bible book. Harder to read but quite silly.
I thought this book was so funny. This book is about cats. The cats have funny sayings around their funny picture. I think people that like cats should read this funny little book.
