The third volume is clearly the back story volume: In the first chapter Rasetsu's mum shows up and we get interaction with her and background about Rasetsu's deceased father and the hang-ups she has with his memory. This is used by a haunt and Rasetsu can show off how much she has grown from the scared girl that she was (very cute young Rasetsu, too). A nice touch was that at the end of the chapter Kuryu makes an attempt to tell her how much she means to him ("I'll be there for you. I'll watch out for you"), and she misunderstands him to the degree that he feels like a father for her (her mum is quite cute in a helpless sort of way, so it would not be a surprise for a guy to fall in love with her)^^.

The next two chapters dive into Yako's background, with the younger brother of one of the Yurara characters being haunted by his girlfriend who died in an accident (). This means the gang go to his old school and finds out that Yako was in love with Yurara, the guardian spirit.

Rasetsu starts reflecting on what it means to lose a person you love, at the same time she wants Yako to tell her what he particularly likes about her (insecurity ^^) - first that is played for laughs and then the he actually manages to articulate what he likes about her. Rasetsu gets hit by the hammer of her emotions once again.

Kuryu sees her reactions and starts to become quite pointed in his dislike of Yako - who is still pretty oblivious towards Kuryu's feeling for Rasetsu or Rasetsu's developing emotions for him. But they are both able to work together to make sure Rasetsu can use her powers to lay the ghost of Dai's girlfriend to rest.

The last chapter is a nice, short background one - the one human without spiritual powers in the agency, Aoi Kugi, tells us how he came to work for Hiichiro Amakawa - showing the various sides of the boss, talking about how Rasetsu came to live with them and how he himself decided to do his best for all his charges - and we see that his cheer and care ground the agency(at least Rasetsu and the boss).

Today's post is on Rasetsu, vol. 3 by Chika Shiomi. It is 208 pages long and is published by Shojo Beat. The cover is purple with Rasetsu and Yako on it. As it is the third in the series you need to have read the first two volumes to understand the story. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The intended reader is someone who likes shojo manga, ghost stories, and mild romance plots. The story is told from third person close of Rasetsu and Yako. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Being haunted by spirits seems to run in the family- this time, it’s Rasetsu’s mother who needs help! Can Rasetsu dispel the spirit successfully with her own personal family issues weighing her down?

Review- We get to see into Rasetsu’s life from before she was a ghost hunter and her mother is very different from her. Her mother is a good person but a little silly and that makes life harder for Rasetsu because she doesn’t know how to protect herself from evil spirits and has to rely on Rasetsu and friends for protection. But this volume doesn’t move the story forward. We don’t get any new information about the evil spirit that is going to come for Rasetsu and we don’t know what Yako is going to do about his life. It was a fine volume but I want the story to get moving a little faster, it makes me worried about the ending maybe being rushed. But so far this is still a good series and I am enjoying reading it.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Still meh about Yako as a lead. The introduction of Rasetsu's mother was pretty weak, too.
Interesting learning a bit more about the ridiculously nice Aoi, although he still doesn't seem to do much other than provide a slight buffer to the other characters' more abrasive personalities.

Absolutely wonderful. I laughed out loud, got goosebumps, adored the characters, and thoroughly enjoyed every single panel. That rarely happens to me 🤣 This series. Oh man. It is perfection; checks every one of my boxes 🥹❤️

I like Estara's review (sorry for the lazy review - still recovering and not feeling well this morning). Since I didn't read Yurara, I missed the connections. I think I'd enjoy this more if I'd read the spin off source (or known it was a spin off when I'd bought it). Overall enjoying it.

2020 Read #33

More of the same, not much to say. I just feel like these characters are hiding themselves behind different personas, and it’s hard to say what’s genuine or not.

Rasetsu’s realization of her feelings for Yako... so adorably funny....

I enjoyed reading about Aoi and the chief in the last chapter of this volume. Gave me the feels.

awwwww

aoi is a grade a cutie

this volume fleshes out our surrounding characters a bit. we get a storyline with mei's younger brother dai which brings in some of yako's backsory from yurara. also rasetsu realizes she's developing feelings and in the time honoured tradition of shoujo heroines who hold my heart, flails wildly about in a fit of flustered dismay

also you get some backstory on the non-powered member of the agency, aoi, leading to my conclusion above. what a sweet kid, i like chief better now just for seeing him acknowledge that

There was some development. At least for Rasetsu and her feelings toward a certain someone. My thoughts about Kuryu's feelings were confirmed. There was some backstory on Aoi, which was nice because I wasn't really appreciating his role. I did like this volume and I like how the story is moving along. I wonder what'll happen next because Yako does not know how to read people's feelings. Not as much humor in this one as in the first two volumes.

It's funny how much more I enjoy this spin off series compared to the original by this author. I think the plot is more intriguing here.

I'm gonna sound really creepy, but Yako and Kuryu are soooo handsome! Like I'm jealous of Rasetsu for having those two beautiful men. (:
