Although I am a strong fan of Pat Boone, the singer and the person, I found this book not so interesting. It's really just his preaching, his story of how his family, individually and collectively, found or re-found their religion. He is a man I admire. Usually. I remember seeing him on Johnny Carson one night telling the story of a time he and his wife, Shirley, were driving and started up a freeway entrance ramp. He said as he drove by, one of a pair of hitchhikers made an obscene gesture. He slammed on the brake, jumped out of the car, and went back to berate the two. Then as he returned to his car, Shirley asked, "Where are they going?" He got back out and invited the boys to jump in and gave them a ride. That story, and any like it, would have illustrated this book and made it a lot better. This world needs a lot more kind and generous people, which Pat and Shirley Boone are.
I chose to give this book 5 stars because it greatly refreshed my heart and spirit. Pat is very open and honest with his life, his marriage and his family. He begins by sharing a mountain top experience and then starts to tell the reader about his beginning. Raised in a conservative Christian home, he explains how he kept his morals in Hollywood for many years and then the gradual decline of his faith and family/marriage. He began doubting God and slipped further from the squeaky-clean image he portrayed for many years. He finally looks up, as in to the Lord, and yes the Lord gives him a new experience supernaturally that changes himself, his wife and family. Pat documents many miracles as a result of this, confirming his testimony. He is quick to give God the glory and admit he is still in school, learning lessons.
One reviewer stated to beware of what Pat writes but I don't agree. I, like Pat, sought the Lord at a low time in my life and although I didn't know what it was called received a similar outpouring of The Holy Spirit. Since my family and friends don't talk or believe in such a thing, I stayed quiet about it but when I did mention it received ridicule. So I quenched the Spirit, until I read this book and realized that not everyone's experience is the same but the Spirit is the same and unites us in Christ Jesus. Pat gives lots of scripture and admits to having doubts about it but faith triumphed over his fears, as it did for me recently again. I thank God I read this book and have opened my heart to God again. I will only add that at the time of my experience, I truly doubted God gave a special baptism of the Spirit so my prayer was "Lord if you truly do please make it clear to me in scripture but if not show me that too. it wasn't sure month before I experienced an unspeakable joy and peace and could no longer doubt. I hope this book and my own testimony will encourage someone to seek the Lord and find him.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I've always liked Pat and Shirley and their family. I learned a lot about their family, God and Jesus by reading this book. Pat and Shirley were my parents age, and I'm more the age range of their kids. I would recommend this book to fans of the Boone family and anyone who wants to earn more about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
