In pieno XIX secolo, Ludwig avrebbe voluto essere Parsifal o Luigi XIV; il costituzionalismo e la democrazia non avevano senso per lui; aborriva la Prussia e il suo militarismo, e dopo la proclamazione del Reich rinunciò anche a lottare con i suoi ministri e con l'onnipotente burocrazia. Ludwig fu segnato fin dalla nascita da un'assoluta eccezionalità, sempre in bilico fra kitsch e tragedia, fra sogno e realtà, fra sincerità e finzione; una figura che può affascinare e respingere allo stesso tempo. Forse Ludwig era pazzo, certamente era scomodo, e non per nulla la tradizione popolare attribuisce la sua misteriosa morte nel lago ad assassini senza nome.

Das Buch stammt aus den 1980ern. Auch wenn die Forschung wahrscheinlich schon weiter ist, fand ich es grundsätzlich gut. Bisschen gestelzt geschrieben. Nix für Unstudierte.
Ludwig II. ist eine sehr komplexe historische Figur. Finde der Autor ist dem gerecht geworden. Auch die ganzen Mythen, die sich um seinen Tod ranken, hat der Autor gut auseinandergenommen. Außerdem hat sich Franz Herre auch nicht gescheut das Wort Homosexualität in Bezug auf Ludwigs sexuelle Orientierung zu benutzen. Ist ja auch durch Quellen gut belegbar.

Biografia interessante e dettagliata, con una ricostruzione minuziosa anche del contesto politico-militare dell'epoca.
