The editor of Tikkun magazine and the co-author (with Cornel West) of Blacks and Jews presents this concrete and empathetic guide to building a spiritually rich Jewish life.
Michael Lerner was an American political activist, the editor of Tikkun, a progressive Jewish interfaith magazine based in Berkeley, California, and the rabbi of Beyt Tikkun Synagogue in Berkeley.
Michael Lerner set out to write a book about Jewish Renewal, and the first half of the book was a very insightful view of Judaism. But anyone could tell that the book became overly political pushing a progressive politics narrative that would not let up. I stopped reading 3/4 through the book because the political bias was too obvious and too hard to ignore. The book was written in the 1990s and the political landscape was much different then. Had Lerner stuck to the timeless truths of Judaism this would have been a great book! Unfortunately it turned into a political book about how Jews should be progressive. I find this opinion, as a Jew myself, to be anti-Semitic. Not all Jews need to fit into one box. Not all Jews are the same. The good this book could have done was ruined by inserting ever changing politics into the picture. Because of this, this book can be described as outdated.
