Since this book's debut, LITERATURE AND THE CHILD has become a popular choice in the children's literature market. The book covers the two major topical areas of children's literature -- genres of children's literature (e.g., picture books, folklore, etc.) and the use of children's literature in the classroom. The book is beautifully written and illustrated to reflect the tone and feel of children's books. The authors pay careful attention to diversity and provide research-based information about teaching. Extensive booklists are provided for the student to use as an ongoing resource as well as teaching ideas that can be applied in future instruction. Significantly enhanced technology offerings on CD-ROM include an all-new video component featuring in-depth interviews with leading children's book authors and illustrators, an improved title search engine, and an online Tool Bank feature. Additionally, this book includes a four-month subscription to InfoTrac College Edition, and each chapter includes suggested articles from the prestigious HORNBOOK journal, as well as further suggestions for in-class discussion and outside writing assignments.
Read this for class and skimmed the chapters we didn't read. I think it's pretty good and useful but it's a lot of references during the chapter bodies that seem unnecessary since they're just there as references and that already has 2 sections (each chapter and a full appendix) and only succeeded in adding pages to the book.
Yes, it’s a textbook. But i really really loved reading this. i devoured every page, loving the content, and it really sparked a greater appreciation in my being for literature of all kinds.
This was the text book for my Children's Lit course in my maters program. I will use it often as a resource in the future. The books lists are amazing.
This is a beautifully written book that explores each genre in its own chapter. There are especially helpful tips about teaching each genre in classrooms. I'm glad the author included lists of so many great books to read. I read many of the recommended books. These different books from different genres dealt with complex subjects using adequate details.
This was the textbook for my Children's Literature course as an undergraduate. I found it to be a very interesting and insightful book on the different aspects and genres of children's lit.
