The Cleveland Clinic is a respected source for health information, so what you'll find in this book is accurate. I only gave it two stars because it's a pretty generic overview of the most common arthritic conditions. It's helpful information for someone who's looking for just that, but there are many reliable arthritis sites on the internet where you can find the same information. Once you've gotten the overview, it's not a very useful book to have on hand because it doesn't contain enough content about each specific form of arthritis, should you be so unlucky to have one. Unless it's for someone who can't or doesn't access the internet, just do an internet search on arthritis.

I'm not sure who this book would actually benefit, since it tries to do too much at once. The book covers several different types of arthritis, none with enough depth to actually help the people who've never heard of it but too much depth for those who are skimming with the suspicion that they have some type of arthritis but aren't sure what.

Also, there's a line about "if you have rheumatoid arthritis, don't get fat" that made me feel flames on the side of my face.

This is a good book to read if youve been newly diagnosed or have a relative suffering from joint discomfort.

As a longterm arthritis patient my main complaint is that this book deemphasises any talk of pain management. There is a great deal of discussion about disease modifying drugs and anti-inflammatory medications, but little to no mention of analgesics. I believe there was one mention of Tylenol in a throw-away paragraph about COX-2 medication.

Many arthritis patients will require analgesic medicines in addition to DMARDS, NSAIDS and the newer biologics.

The book also suffers from a deemphasysing of possible side-effects with the new biologics. As in many areas of rheumatolgy, the book hails biologics as a wonder drug while mentioning only once th fact that they are still First Generation and we have NO idea about the longterm effects of these medications.

I think this book is most valuable for newfolks who want to know what types of arthritis are out there and how they differ from other sufferers. But i hope and pray anyone who reads this also seeks effective treatment for pain management and more comprehensive information about biologics.
