A Bottled Up Story

Tyler O'Connor, a successful antiques dealer, meets aspiring artist Mark Burke when Mark's mother decides to sell some of her antiques collection. Tyler is enchanted by the quiet, reserved artist and works up the courage to ask Mark to dinner. Despite the date's success and their mutual attraction, Mark's happiness takes a blow when his mother learns that he is gay and throws him out of the house. Unsure of where to go, Mark shows up on Tyler's doorstep and finds shelter.

Tyler's encouragement and support help kick-start Mark's career, especially when Mark finds that Tyler inspires him in the bedroom as well as the studio. But they're daunted when bad memories of the past, struggles in the present, and fear for the future strain Mark and Tyler's budding relationship. As the old saying goes, the best revenge is living well—and in this case—loving well, and with that in mind, Mark and Tyler go in search of happily ever after.

This was OK ish. I felt as if I was reading a comic, without the added interest of some pictures. The story was reasonable, and had a lot of potential, but is written in what I can only describe as a 'Janet and John' way. The attempt at tension and intrigue just did not come off.

(" Call nine-one-one!" Tyler just held Mark's hand and waited. The architect found a furniture pad and used it as a blanket to keep Mark warm. The contractor directed the ambulance and EMT's to where Mark was lying
The EMTs were very efficient. One worked on Mark while the other asked the appropriate questions. They quickly had Mark on his way to the hospital. Tyler followed them. The architect and the contractor said they would make the building secure. )

I just could not feel the slightest bit worried for our heroes, and I didn't take to them either. They were nice enough, but just bland and really not warranting a story about them.

Update - Since writing this Andrew has gone on to release further books in the series and he has redeemed himself. I enjoy the series as a whole and while the comments above still hold, they do not seem so important in the bigger picture, so I have elevated the star rating accordingly - for the series, not this book especially!

Tyler O'Connor, an antiques store owner, and Mark Burke, an aspiring artist, meet when Tyler goes to the Burke home to check out some pieces being sold by Mark's mother. There is an instant attraction between the two men and when they meet again they agree to go on a date. Unfortunately for Mark, their wonderful date is brought to his mother's attention and leads to him being thrown out of his home. With nowhere else to go Mark ends up at Tyler's home. Tyler offers Mark a place to stay until he gets on his feet and also his friendship and understanding. As the days pass Tyler and Mark's relationship begins to shift from friendship to much deeper feelings and the men find themselves falling not only into bed but in love as well.

At the same time that they are taking their relationship to the next level Tyler is also helping Mark with his career. With Tyler's encouragement and support Mark's artistic nature is given free rein with wonderful results. Both Mark's career and his love affair with Tyler blossom but their happiness and good times are threatened as the men find themselves in danger from an unknown source. Working together and with the help of friends Tyler and Mark struggle to face the threats standing in the way of their happiness and eventually they are able to prevail against their attacker. In the end they find that the best revenge is the love and happiness they've found in each other.

I found this book to be well written and interesting although with a bit more angst than I like to read. I did like both main characters and found their relationship sweet, engaging and sexy as well. My only complaint with the characters is that I felt they were too emotional. I understand that Mark goes through a lot with his family problems and Tyler has issues from his past as well but for my personal preference I would have liked less angst and tears. The supporting characters are good additions to the story, even the ones that are not 'nice' and don't agree with Tyler and Mark being together somehow are written in such a way as to avoid being truly 'bad'.

Overall, I enjoyed this story, which features solid writing, likable characters, sex scenes that range from sweet and romantic to downright hot, and while the plot was a bit predictable it still engaged my attention. Andrew Grey has a wonderful way of bringing his characters to life and this story is no exception. The novel, 267 pages long, is one that I recommend as a good read.

Oookay. So, the story itself is quite interesting, the characters likeable, although most of them are somewhat two-dimensional (I mean, come on, nobody is only good or bad in the real life), but it was the writing that I found disturbing in several parts.

For example: Tyler returned to the bedroom with two glasses of champagne and a bowl of strawberries. Handing Mark a glass, Tyler set the bowl of strawberries on the nightstand, placed a large berry between his lips, and pressed the berry to Mark's lips. After sharing the berry… and there were three other berries in the following two sentences! Not ten pages later there is a similar paragraph with six sentences and five everyone in it.

Or: “Tyler, your touch is thrilling!” It sounds like a romance book printed back in the... 1890s maybe?

I'm sure that a little polishing of the writing style and less of sweetness would highly increase the reading experience for me. But, if you like your romance really sweet (and I'm talking about hyperglycemia here), this book is for you.

Though the author considers this book as the first in the series, chronologically Master of the Revels is the FIRST.

No words can do this book justice, so just read it and know that Mr. Grey is an artist just like the characters in this book. You will not be disappointed, and am sure it will become one of your favorites if not one of those comfort books we all need every now and then.
I was pleasantly surprised that though the book belongs in a series it can be read individually without missing anything. For someone who's anal about it, i actually loved it all the more. In fact i read them in the opposite order (latest book first) and then re-read them correctly.

You would swear this was written by a woman...a little elementary in writing style for me, not enough...something....

Cannot pinpoint exactly what. But I could have changed names and organs and it would have been a Harlequin romance...nothing wrong with that, but not what i was hoping for. Too sweet and syrupy.

I enjoy angst and melodrama as much as the next person believe me, (LOVE Cameron Dane heh) but this just missed the mark.

I will say that updating this, I have enjoyed Andrew Grey's other books. Characters are always a little saccharine, but that seems to be what works best for this author. Enjoyable reads but not keepers. But if you like mellow, sweet romances, give them a try.

Tyler O'Connor is proud of where he is in life – a thriving business, good friends and at a comfortable place in his life, What more could he ask for. Tyler knows what more he needs but he is neither rushed nor fussed about being alone – he is just happy for the blessing that he has had so far. Tyler is a seller of fine antiques and his days when not in the shop are following up calls of people wanting to sell him little family heirlooms and treasures.

On one such call Tyler makes the find of his life and as with all things goods in life – it and him comes with a spot of bother. Tyler meets Mark at his parent home when he goes on an antique buy - he is instantly attracted to the him but the professional that he is, he keeps the matter on a business footing and leaves Mark and chalks him up a wonderful meeting.

When Mark turns up a few days later to not only see Tyler but to ask him out as well – Tyler jumped at the chance and he hopes with all his heart that this is a new phase of his life about to begin.

Mark is in the closet to his family, but when he sees Tyler he knows he has to follow his instinct and make contact. This sets about a chain reaction that see’s Mark soaking wet and homeless at Tyler’s backdoor two days later.

Tyler is concerned for the plight that Mark is in but more so he is crushed that anyone would treat anyone of Marks gentle nature this way – So he takes him in. Things are destined not to go smoothly for these star crossed lover and before long threat, dangerous event and personal tragedy enters the men life. Tyler and Mark are stronger that anyone gives them credit for and they are determined to win against all the odds.

Highlights..

The plot of this book was so simply that it makes a refreshing change. There was no clock and dagger stuff, no high octane excitement, just simply love, hate and a lot of forgiveness and patience toss in for good measure.

I like the main protags, they were laid back men who just wanted to make their contribution to life while finding that slice of happiness along the way. They were wonderfully developed and I sympathized and empathized with alot of what they were going through.

The cast circling Mark and Tyler were simply put – forces to reckoned with. They range from the ever supportive friends and family to the spiteful, hateful beings that make so much out of so little and only causes misery.

I loved how Mr grey gave rather detailed back history of the men's life – He didn’t skirt over the hurt and the pain, but made me see where they were coming from and why they think as they do now.

I also like the fact that the cast in THE BEST REVENGE were go getters – they were determined. They made it happen for themselves and they wasted no time on what if’s – I liked that alot.

Whilst I didn’t get that immediate emotional connection between the men, over time they made me see it – with little words, thoughts and deeds. These two made me see that they were each others soulmate.

Tyler nibbled Mark’s ear as he whispered, “I want you to move in
with me.” His hands rubbed Mark’s stomach.
“Tyler, I’ve been living here for weeks.” The voice was very soft
and raspy. Tyler’s hands were roaming over his body.
“I know, but I wanted to make it official. I want you to know that
you’re wanted and loved, so would you please make your home with
me?” Tyler nibbled on Mark’s neck and shoulders.

The Best Revenge © Andrew Grey

There is a curiosity and a naivety to the men that I liked. It wont work for every one but for me it was the deal breaker. They asked questioned, were not shy about asking for help and were genuinely surprise at how some things played out. They enjoy the simply things in life and they had a kind of hope that things will get better in the long run.

THE BEST REVENGE develops over a reasonable amount of time which gave the book a very realistic feel to it. This wasn’t a weekend romance where they take over the world and conquer all their fears in a fortnight.

Lowlights

While there are areas of this book that I appreciated the detail the author went into – the first third of the book felt like too much detail was being given. It was too specific and almost had the feel of filling a space. I was pleased this was only within the first third of the books – because once the flow change it then felt more nature and I was liking some of the assumption that the author left me to make for myself.

There is a formality to Tyler’s langue that was bit off putting in some scenes – I cannot imagine speaking to my lover in this tone.

The dinner was wonderful. Mark and Tyler talked, laughed, and
kissed their way through the meal. After dinner, Tyler put the dishes in
the kitchen and joined Mark in the living room. Sitting together on the
sofa, they were soon kissing passionately. Mark pressed Tyler into the
sofa cushions and started to open the buttons on his shirt. “Mark, why
don’t we move this into the bedroom?” Lifting himself off the sofa,
Tyler bent down to kiss Mark. “Give me a minute and then join me.”
Tyler slowly walked into the bedroom, clicking the stereo remote to
change the music.

Bottom line

Another wonderful production from Andrew Grey. The theme is easy, and the cast a delight to have met. The community feel of the book sits well with me and the fact that after years of pain and hope something's do come full circle which was a nice touch.

If you are looking for a read that the phrase “Killing them with Kindness” brings to life – THE BEST REVENGE is that book.

I decided to read this book because I wanted to read a book with nice characters and filled with gentle romance, knowing that Andrew Grey would deliver this.

This is a sweet story of Tyler, who runs an antiques shop, and Mark, an artist. This is the first book in the series and introduces a number of characters who are friends of Tyler and Mark but most of the story directly involves the couple themselves.

Tyler 'rescues' Mark when he is tossed out of home by his homophobic mother and brother. They pretty much fall instantly in love.

These men are very vocal with their feelings and the book is filled with declarations of love and romantic gestures. There is also an awful lot of sex between the two men. I love a good sex scene but found there was just a little too much for my liking in this book. Maybe because the scenes seemed a bit too repetitive.

The story follows the men as they come to terms with family rejection, harassment, and violence in terms of property damage, all while developing their relationship, building a home, growing the business and establishing Mark's painting career.

There are some lovely scenes describing Mark's artwork and how he manages to capture emotion. "In all my life I have never seen such a visual expression of love." I would have loved to see what these portraits looked like!

My main negative feedback for this book is only a small thing. The dialogue often seemed too formal and I think would have benefited from use of more contractions.

I would highly recommend this book for lovers of sweet romance.

Ok it's official DNF time. I knew it was romantic (sappy) going in, given the author, but i thought i was in the mood for that. Well, I underestimated the cheese. That, plus the see Jane run style of writing (see most other reviews for samples) really turned me off of this book.

I've read other works by this author, and this seems to be out of character - on the writing style, not the romance- AG seems to favor the sweet and flowery type of love :) He's not off my reading list, but this book is.

I was so looking forward to reading Mark and Tyler's back-story after first being introduced to the characters in Bottled Up and it breaks my heart to say that I found this book disappointing. I found I was being pulled out of the story-line by the omnipresent and repetitive sex scenes. Now don't get me wrong...I love an erotic element in my books but this was too much even for me.

The story itself was good, but the writing was kind of stilted in a very 'this happened. He did this. And then he thought this' kind of way.

Sweet and easy describe this story to a T. Mark and Tyler embody the picture perfect romance – total adoration for each other, mutual respect, desire and love. It’s easy to feel it all in this story. They definitely face adversity, but they handle it by always presenting a united front and working through issues together. There is virtually no angst between these men and that’s what makes it such a light and sweet read. There’s not a lot of sexual tension, but there is a lot of sex in this book. In fact, probably more sex than I’ve seen in previous books by this author. I think it worked well for this story and represented just how much the main characters were in love. I’m reading this series out of order, but each book seems to stand pretty well on its own. Nice!

I usually love Andrew grey, but this one just fell flat for me. The characters where almost too perfect and here was no angst whatsoever. It should have been a really fast read, but I kept getting distracted by EVERYTHING. It just wasn't holding my interest at.all. I am, however, blaming it on the fact that it is one of his earlier works and will give the rest of the series a try.

The best way to describe this book is sweet. There is a little drama, a lot of sap (that's a good thing), and a very sweet love story. Mark and Tyler are perfect. A very enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more in this series.

When a book reaches a point where everything is good, the problems have been solved, and everyone is happy but there's still 3 1/2 hours of story left, you can't help but have a gut feeling that something nasty is going to happen, and didn't it just!! I can't put my finger on it but, for me, there was something a tiny bit off about the earlier sex scenes, I can't say what, it just felt a little off, that is, except for the sexy scene at, ironically, 69%. But it didn't spoil the rest of the story for me, a sweet tale, two lovely men and one total prick, and antiques, what more could you need except to hope for a happily ever after.

While I liked the overall story, there was a LOT of sex in this book and it actually took away some of my enjoyment by the end. I can appreciate a lot of sex in my literature, but it needs to be varied to keep my attention and it really wasn't here. Sex, clean up and go to bed was pretty much every encounter in this one and I was heartily sick of it by the end.

I liked the story in general but it felt like it was overshadowed by the sex which was a shame.

I tried to understand the meaning of the title, The Best Revenge, and I think it means the best revenge is to be happy even if life is not turning smiles to you.

Tyler’s love for Mark is easy and immediate: as soon as they met they understand there is something special between them, and when Mark is suddenly homeless, even if they only had one date and barely a kiss, Tyler asks Mark to move with him.

The relationship between them never falters and to be true, they find more allies than enemies, but those few enemies are the ones who hurt them more. Both share the sad experience of being rejected by their own mothers (and in Tyler’s case, also father) without neither a chance to explain themselves. For Tyler it was easier, since he had the help of a wealthy grandmother, who provided for him and allowed the guy to follow his dreams. Maybe for that reason, Tyler feels like he needs to help Mark, and for sure there is the small details he is in love with the guy.

I liked the fact that Mark doesn’t put out a stubborn pride, and he is able to accept Tyler’s help for what it’s, a love act. That of Mark and Tyler is not a “common” life, they are on the middle-up side of social status, they have money, even if they are not outrageously rich, and in a way, money seems to call other money. A series of lucky circumstances are following these two men, and there is really nothing opposing their love.

The only negative constant is Mark’s brother, even if I didn’t really understand his hate, if not out of spite: apparently he is really an evil man, and everything he does, it’s from being a bully; it’s not even a question of money, it’s simply stupid hate.

The Best Revenge is set in the same place where many other books by Andrew Grey takes place, and so many of the cameos are from couples of previous novels (Tom and Bill, Sam Davis, Peter Barrett,…); as for the previous books, I had the feeling this is the reflection of the community where the same author is living, and so there is a little share of true life in what he is writing.

I read this entire series (books 1-8) before reviewing and while some books weren't as interesting as others in the series, on the whole this is my favorite Andrew Grey series so far. I felt that he did a great job tying each book into the rest of the series, without forcing too many relationships.

The first book features Tyler O'Connor, an antiques dealer, and Mark Burke, an artist. Mark and Tyler are instantly attracted to each other when Tyler comes to Marks' mother's house to purchase some antiques from her. After their first date, Mark is outed and his mother kicks him out of the house. Mark moves in with Tyler and his career as an artist kicks off with Tyler as his muse.

Despite the fact that Tyler and Mark moved in together after knowing each other 2 days (I am not a huge insta-love fan), I liked both of their characters. There is some conflict that is generated due to the fact that Mark's brother is a huge douche bag and I think that the book does a good job of resolving that conflict and providing closure by the end. I felt that the story line was good but there were a lot of unnecessary sex scenes. I found myself skipping through a lot of them to get back to the story line.

This was not my favorite book in the series, so if you find it to be around 3 stars like I did, keep in mind that the series does get better as it goes on (unlike some of Mr. Grey's other series that seem to fizzle for me as they go on).

My favorite books have good characters and this had several of them. Tyler is a true treasure. Strong, warm, capable and loving, he has so many wonderful characteristics it hard to decide just what made me like him so much. I think it was because he could see Mark, I mean really see what made Mark tick and how to inspire him.

Mark was a little more difficult to read at first. He ended up so hurt so early, but he was smart enough to know that Tyler was his safe haven.

I did notice that I tended to skip through the love scenes, I found the dialog a bit annoying, which was a weird reaction. The rest of the story was warm, loving and supportive.

I love stories about artists... Whether it is about a painter, photographer, a sculptor, or whether it's a musical artist, playing or singing, or a writer of fantastic books to share with others I enjoy creative people and how they think. I just wish I could see what the author sees. The paintings in this story sounded so wonderful I wish I could have gone to the gallery openings to see them for myself. And I found that Tyler was also an artist, he saw things and just brought out the best in whatever he touched. And I guess that included Mark.

So much bad happened to these two men but it was good to see that so much good came out of it. Recommended

I had high hopes for this book. But this is this the very first book I've read by this author. I could not for the life of me get emotionally invested in these characters. I know they are fictitious people but I could not get behind the characters and there actions. Mark for instance, came off as simple minded. He had no backbone, couldn't make difficult decisions, relied to much on Tyler. And I even felt he based his self worth off of how much Tyler loved him. Another problem with the book is it started off great and I loved that they waited till they felt that It was an appropriate time after discussion for them to have sex. But once they had sex the author really could not develop the characters because every three to four to five pages they were having sex and then you'd get maybe three pages of them interacting with family and friends and such, then the two were back at it again. The book and characters were boring and uninteresting in my opinion but if you need a quick read until you find you something that is meatier or you can hold your attention. This is the book to get sidetracked on. But I will read the next book in the series just because I heard that his books have gotten better with time.

I'm usually a lover of Andrew Grey stories, but this one fell flat for me. I didn't engage with either MC, Tyler O'Connor, antiques store owner, or Mark Burke, artist. In fact, I thought Tyler was okay, but Mark was just a wuss -- childish and immature at best.

The story moved along at a snail's pace and there was more sex in this one than in all of the other books I've ever read by him (and there are many!) combined. It started to feel like PWP. I never thought I'd ever say that about one of this author's books.

I'm disappointed that I'm disappointed. Does that make sense? And I'm sad about it too. I think there was potential here for a good story but there was just too much filler, most of it with sex scenes, and the minor mystery just dragged out. Probably if it was shorter and a faster pace, I'd have rated it higher. Sorry, can't recommend this one to anyone.

This is one of the Bottled Up books. Tyler is an antiques dealer who meets Mark when he buys some of Mark's mother's furniture. However when they are seen out on a date, Mark's mother kicks him out and he's beaten by his bully brother. He moves in with Tyler and someone starts sending threatening letters and they have to deal with the brother (and supportive sister) when Mark's mother dies and he's left as the executor of the estate. I liked both Tyler and Mark although I thought Mark cried quite a bit. Sometimes it was warranted and sometimes I thought it seemed a bit much and these guys were like bunnies. Holy sex machines. I actually skimmed a bit because it was a bit too much for me, but that might not be for everyone. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood. This is set before many of the other characters in the series so there wasn't much character overlap.

I upped my rating on this book to 4 from 3 because I really liked how Mr. Grey developed Mark throughout the book. It didn't get 5 stars for 2 reasons.

First, I was disappointed in Tyler's development - or lack of it. Although he was initially described as rock-solid, he seemed to kind of - wimp out maybe? - slowly.

Second, the book meandered. When I start skipping sections (whether or not they are sex scenes) I know I am not satisfied with what I am reading. Andrew Grey's works are, for the most part, gentle romances. But to rate this book truly outstanding, it would have had to push my buttons more than it did.

I hate to do negative reviews, so I will end by saying that overall, this book is worth the read just for the way the ending balances out.

I admit I bumped up the rating a little. I don't think it was a true 3 star but it wasn't horrible. I just didn't like the "perfection" of the book. The romance was too easy, the troubles smoothed over a little too lightly, life arranged a little too well, it just became rather blah.

The only other real hitch for me was the over use of the word butt. I really am not appreciative of the word in sex scenes and it was used a lot in the story. It really didn't make me feel all...sexy;)

Still I did enjoy the story and I won't let it deter me in reading more in the series and by the author.

I really struggled to finish this book and that's mostly because the characters didn't pop for me...they were so perfect...even the secondary characters were perfect and the bad guy didn't seem all that bad to begin with.. I know that Andrew Grey has written much better stories than this one.. the pacing in this book was far too rushed...the story jumped from one situation to the next without the characters seeming to take a breather ...this one was an ok read for me..I gave it just 3 stars because I thought the main characters..Tyler and Mark were really quite sweet...

There are 5 books in this very, very hot series!! Wow!

I found the first 2 books to be full of sex and each had their own great story and unique characters. The last 3 stories seemed to focus more on developing the stories and a little less on the sex (although there was still plenty of of it!). Lots of variety - in many forms!!

The characters from the first books would show up in the next book until they were all on a cruise together in the last book - I loved being able to see them all, even if it was just a little bit.

This book was a disappointment for me. I'm usually a diehard 'Andrew Grey' fan, but this book was excessively saccharine, rushed, unrealistic and...well...to be honest really irritating. The normally in-depth characters seemed 2D, and there were plot elements that seemed pointless and out of place. I had to force myself to finish this one, which is a shame - but I still adore Andrew's other books!

The story itself was interesting, although too unbelievable. The sex scenes were plenty (way more than I'd have liked for this story) and (most important) repetitive. However, my biggest problem was that I didn't like the writing in this one. I've read many other books by the author and I don't remember something like that. Finally, I never warmed towards one of the MCs, Tyler.
BTW, totally agree with the opinion that this book seems that it was written by a woman.
