Baby tushies. Grown-up tushies. Animal tushies. Tushies are all around us! Even the word, TUSHY, is fun to say. C'mon, say it with TUSHY! TUSHY! TUSHY!
Here's a celebration of this squeezably soft body part, with humor and warmth that readers of all ages will relate to.
Fran Manushkin is the author of more than fifty books for children, including the Katie Woo series; Big Girl Panties, illustrated by Valeria Petrone; Big Sisters Are the Best, illustrated by Kirsten Richards; The Tushy Book, illustrated by Tracy Dockray; and Baby, Come Out!, illustrated by Ronald Himler and translated into eight languages. She lives in New York City.
This is a cute book, and it’s for very young children, I’d say birth through maybe preschool and for some 5 and 6 year olds perhaps. Independent readers might enjoy reading it to younger kids, birth through age 4. The rhyming story is fun and fun to read aloud.
The pictures really shine. They’re adorable, showing tushies of children, adults, various animals, and toys. Most pages have a tremendous amount of detail to view (at least in the hardcover edition I read; I don’t know if the board book edition is a full edition.) The illustrations show kids (& sometimes grownups) engaged in a variety of activities, such as bathing, being at the beach, at the zoo, having an outing at a park, dancing, skating, sledding, sleeping, and one sitting on a potty chair. The latter especially had me thinking this book might be particularly interesting to kids at the potty training stage. There are more settings too.
This book is meant to be read to young children, with as much of their input as they’d like to give, and reading it that way could be a great deal of fun. That’s really the way adults and older children can enjoy this book. The illustrations are fun even without children’s reactions, but even there kids’ responses will make them more fun. I’d enjoy pointing out some details I noticed, if the kids don’t notice them themselves. I did smile several times during my reading, but it was partly from imagining reading it to youngsters.
"Life is comfy, you will find, / when you have your own behind. / Sitting down would NOT be cushy / if you didn't have your tushy! / When you're born, your tushy's there, / ready to go anywhere." And so begins this adorable picture-book exploration of the tushy, aimed at younger children. With all kinds of behinds - child and adult, animal and toy - on display, the rhyming text celebrates the many wonderful things we can do, from sledding to sitting on laps, with our tushy.
This fun little book, with its rollicking rhymes that just beg to be read aloud, and its winsome pencil and ink illustrations, would make an excellent story-hour selection for younger children. These sorts of humorous body-awareness books - think Everyone Poops, The Gas We Pass: The Story of Farts, or The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit - always seem to be a hit with young readers, who appreciate the honest exploration of themes that sometimes embarrass adults. For my part, I enjoyed this one enough that I will be tracking down the author's companion volume, The Belly Book.
4.5 STARS (probably would have been a solid five stars when I was a kid)
So adorable!!! A really cute, fun tribute to that cushy little bum we are all born with. Where would we be without our tushy!? What would we sit on!? Where would we put our underwear!? And wouldn't the world be a little less fun without the word "Tushy"!? ;-> Children will probably find this endlessly amusing as we see babies, children, adults and even animals engaged in various activities--the illustrations always manage to highlight the tushy, though. They are really sweet illustrations full of details and loving families of a variety of ethnic backgrounds (reminds me a bit of Marla Frazee' work).
Highly recommended to anyone looking for a giggle and might be especially fun for children at the potty-training age (especially given the last illustration).
(Thanks, Lisa, for bringing this cute little book to my attention!)
This book was very, very cute, and there were actually times I laughed aloud. In fact, one line became my Facebook status for a brief period of time. I don;t know if there are a lot of children that need a little help accepting their tushies (though I know many grown women who do), but if there are, this is the book. It's all about tushies of every shape and size (and smell), and the accompanying illustrations are darling. They reminded me somewhat of the artwork of a cartoon my sister watched when she was little (though I can't remember quite which one. Busy World of Richard Scarry, maybe?). It's kind of fussy and soft and very detailed. I would highly recommend this as a fun read along to kids. Or as a youtube worthy moment for stoned adults. :)
A very cute book celebrating the uses of children's tushies from babyhood to adulthood. With colorful illustrations featuring children of all colors in different scenarios, toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy relating to how they use their tushies every day. The rhyming verses make it an excellent book for story times. Beware, there are some semi-nude tushy illustrations that will have your little ones squealing and falling over in laughter.
An absolutely adorable book about behinds, or more correctly tushies. They are everywhere, and everyone has one. A great toddler book, it is funny and silly, and doesn't have a plot, but has counting and vocabulary, and great illustrations.
This book has nice illustrations and a good positive body image message, but I finished it and wondered in what context I would ever use it. I guess I might read it to a kid who was super obsessed with tushies? But I would certainly never use it in story time - too much potential to alienate parents. I would, however, recommend it to parents who ask me for books about bodies.
"Life is cushy, you will find/ When you have your own behind!" I'm not sure whether this book is intended to go with potty training, or just be a great, funny take on a mostly-familiar word for a familiar and giggleriffic body part. Either way, it's a hoot. The family in the illustrations is charming, working their way through the youngest's early years, and only an old-school prude could be offended at the discreet depictions. Grown-ups and toddlers alike will remember and recite lines such as "Grown-up tushies, firm or droopy/Baby tushies, cute but poopy." (Kings, Cats, Dogs and even toys, on the last page, also have adorable tushies.) "Tushy's so much fun to say,/ Say it ten times every day!" We had to have our own copy after checking it out of library.
This book caught my eye the other day at the store. Sadly, the twisted part of me was attracted to it the same way that The Gas We Pass & Everybody Poops appeals to my immature inner-child. When children and parents of young children read this aloud, it is very cute. When I read it aloud, it somehow takes on a dark comedic tone. I am blessed with the same comedic delivery that Christopher Walkin possesses, in that I can read the phone book and people will think that I am getting prepared to drop the punch line.
This is a very sweet book that will make you giggle, even if you aren't one with a left of centre sense of humour.
What can you say... it's a book about tushies. Lots of them... This book was a gift to my son when his sister was born (he was 2 at the time), and I am surprised the binding still holds together. He loved finding the different tushies in the book and "reading" the word tushy throughout. Since receiving it, we have gifted copies to friends many times over. He already knew the term tushy, so it was fun for him to get to read a book that used labels he already knew.
The Tushy Book has to be one of the cutest children's book. I read this to a group of 2 and 3 year old's and they loved it. This book has fun and vivid images, as well as catchy rhymes. I remember growing up the tushy word was sort of a word that we could/should not say. So it thought it was cute and fun how they made a book just about tushies! I even caught myself laughing at the book.
I'm in college and myself along with many of my classmates found this book hysterical! The pictures show settings that everyone can relate to and laugh at. Throughout the book, the author is basically showing you that no matter where you go and what you do, your tushy is always right there behind you! Whether you're old or young this book will probably earn a laugh or two.
Such a fun and silly way to connect with children through a book. This is a great example of contemporary fiction because all of these things could happen, but are not from a true story. The book is about a child learning all about his tushy and how it will be with him forever. A very funny and entertaining book for children of all ages. Even college kids can appreciate a good tushy book.
This is a very cute book for a toddler. I liked the cover with the glittery tushy on it. The book rhymes which is always nice for kids. I like the message it gives along with the illustrations being great.
Some parents will not like that this book encourages children to say tushy 10 times a day but most will get a real kick out of this book. Cute illustrations. Ages 2+
