When Burnside is hired to find a former football star who has disappeared, it sounds like a simple missing person case. But when an acquaintance is found murdered, the stakes rise, and the police begin to hunt for the former star as well. The pressure mounts on Burnside, as the player’s high-profile family and friends pressure him to keep the search going -- but to do so quietly, for reasons that appear dark and sinister.
The investigation sends Burnside into the hidden corners of Los Angeles, into the rarified air of the rich and powerful, as well as the mean streets where life can be tough, and life can be short. Burnside is left to fend for himself, as he works to find the former player before any more carnage can strike. He calls upon old friends and former colleagues, all of whom provide morsels of leads that Burnside must cobble together. And it wouldn’t be a Burnside novel without the sharp-tongued investigator getting into verbal jousts with a host of unsavory characters.
Bull Rush is the 13th novel of the award-winning Burnside mystery series. The story takes place at the end of a sizzling L.A. summer, a precarious time, when nerves are frayed and tempers are short. It doesn’t take much for a fuse to get lit, and for lethal actions to follow. This is a classic hardboiled noir mystery that comes complete with a puzzling set of clues, as well as a very satisfying ending.

What makes a great mystery. I like a strong likable lead character, the detective, and a mystery that keeps me guessing to the end and makes sense with all of the information provided previously in the story. In this case the detective’s back story, his current family life, his introspection and the cases balance to make a great series of novels.
Fast read yet grabs and holds one's attention. A fun read for football fans. I am biased because I have followed the Burnside character from the beginning. Also, having lived in several of the SoCal neighborhoods mentioned in the Burnside books; I can easily visualize and live vicariously through the character.
Burnside is learning to turn the violence, which I appreciate. I was reading the book as I flew into LAX, and got to view the stadium under construction from the air. Great when life imitates art
This book along with the ones before it are always sprinkled with sports comments and a explanation of them, however the cases that Burnside gets involved in move along quickly and the conclusion comes out of left field that you never see coming, great reads!!
Decided I wanted to sit and read a good book one afternoon. Received the e-mail that day that David Chill's book was ready to buy. Bought the book and had an enjoyable afternoon. Wanted more afterwards!!!
I just love reading David Chill's books! I usually finish them in a day or two. Great story. Great characters. Great dialogue. Hoping the next one comes out soon!
David Chill’s protagonist is well developed and believable. Chill’s work is comparable to a combination of Donald Westlake and Lee Goldberg. Looking forward to David Chill’s next effort
I have read the entire series and enjoyed most of it. What is both a good point and a bad at the same time, is that as characters are added in each book, there is a lot of repetition. This is what makes each book a stand alone, but also makes it a little tedious when you read them one after the other. The reason that I gave it a 5 star rating is overall all of the books were well written with excellent plots. The characters were well portrayed in both strengths and weaknesses.
This was a fun romp crime story ...so enjoyable! If you love LA, USC - UCLA football rivalry.... and the many neighborhoods of Metro LA, you'll enjoy this one. Private PI and former USC football player and coach is hired to find a missing former UCLA player who has fallen on hard times and with some sordid real estate deals. Lots of fun. Quick and perfect for the beach!
I stumbled upon David Chill's books a number of years ago. Same first name as me, I am also a former football player, and I have a degree in criminal justice. I figured I would have a lot in common with Burnside. His books never let me down. They are great reads and put together flawlessly.
I'm a fan of David Chill's Burnside novels. He's a cousin to Robert B. Parker's Spenser, a thinking tough guy. I really appreciate the author's knowledge of Los Angeles history that gets liberally sprinkled throughout the books.
Thank you David for providing exactly what I wanted. A great read, well plotted, believable characters aimed at providing me with a getaway from everyday life. I always can count on you for well spent down time. A great little getaway.
Story moves at a nice pace. Not slow but not rushing from one gunfight to another, or jumping into bed with the most beautiful woman he's ever met every couple of pages.
No glaring inconsistencies or typos. I will be reading more by this author.
Burnsides is a PI, hired to get a former acquaintance out of trouble. The story starts off simple until you are faced with two murders. Mystery surrounds the events in this book.
Somehow I missed this when it came out. Burnside has matured in his self-control, which I'm happy about. Still has a great wife and son. He figured this crime out pretty quickly.
The author continues to amaze me with the ability to tell a story and putting in slot of football info from the main characters past to improve the story.
A lot has happened from the first in the series to this book. Burnside becomes a much more likeable PI. Any one to solves people problems needs the same characteristic as Burnside.
