When our accountant retired and move to Vegas where her daughter lives about 2 years ago, I inherited a few books and this was one. I've read about 1/3 of the stories -- except they're not all stories. Some of them are excerpts and mash-ups.
The Hand by Guy de Maupassant "A tale of mystery (Supernatural or NOT?). A man has been found dead -- a classic locked room mystery. Did the severed hand of his enemy (which he had on display in a most odd manner) kill him?" Considering the AGE of this story, it was excellent!
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling is an excerpt from The Jungle Book. Anthropomorphic tale of a mongoose who is adopted by an English family in India and who saves them and various other animal characters from the cobra couple in the garden. was great and appropriate for adults and young 'uns alike
Visions-- A Phantasy by Ivan Turgenev (trans. of Призраки) "A man suffering from ennui is summoned at dusk to a meeting with a ghostly being who takes him on a tour across the sky." wasn't as fun as The Hand, though that may have as much to do with the translation and the age of the story as anything else...
Excerpts from novels and short stories — fun reads for any gender. There is some fiction (Kipling, RL Stevenson), biography (Mother Theresa, Amelia Earhart, some kings and queens of old), animals, etc. Something for everyone!
I said finished but I haven't actually. I just can't finish this book it's to dull. All of these little stories and extracts are a bit to dull for me so I'm not going to end up finishing this book.
I don't know, it just didn't do anything for me, out of the stories I've read my favourite has to be the hand because it was the most interesting and engaging but it still had it's dull moments. I don't know it just didn't really work for me.
