The writing style is deliciously dark. Perfect for Autumn/Winter nights. That ending was so good!

When I heard the premise for Dealings in the Dark and saw the cover I ran to find my Kindle! this was the perfect spooky season read to get me out of my slump. It does get pretty detailed with some gory parts once the book gets to the halfway mark.

in this book our FMC Alex learns the true cost of magic and making a deal with a crossroads demon. for being 200 pgs this book packed a lot into it, you see Alex's mothers past and how it wreaks havoc on Alex's present day. With the way this book ended I can not wait to read book two!! the twist at the end of this was just phenomenal.

I don't feel comfortable leaving a star rating for my own novella, but I truly loved writing this book. This is my first foray into the horror genre, and I am so proud to have told Alex's story in this manner. I hope that it portrays positive aspects of modern day magickal practice while also incorporating classic horror elements. If you would like to discuss the novella further, feel free to send me an email at smoran@obsidianinkwell.com! :)

Gripping, thrilling and definitely chilling!

Can’t say enough about how intriguing this story was. I was on edge from page one to the very end. The author’s writing skill made this story more enjoyable as the descriptions, pacing and level of detail were masterfully done. There is some gore, but nothing felt gratuitous; all were in service of advancing this horror story. It was as close to a theatre experience as I’ve gotten from a book in a long time.
I doubt this book is for the faint of heart but if you are a horror and supernatural thriller fan, do yourself a solid and get this book.

I've been wanting a spooky, witchy read and when I came across this novella, I hoped it was just what I'd been seeking. It was... and more!

Spells, generational witchcraft, a very destructive crossroads demon and his hound, contracts, and a very important ring all make for a rich, fun and frightening, fast moving read!

The ending was both a twist and twisted! I wasn't expecting it, which I always love. I'm hoping it makes room for a 2nd book, but we shall see.

4.5⭐️ rounded up to 5.

"As above, so below. [... ]The circle is sealed."

I really enjoyed the ending! And love how it seems like the author prefers doing this kinda twist. These are my favorite types: loose ends (depending the type), open endings and not-so-happily-ever-after. Makes it much more interesting.

The MC, though. She annoyed tf outta me for quite a bit of this. She was childish, saying things like "Wouldn't you like to know?", slamming doors and others along those lines (didn't make note of the others). She was huffy and thoughtless. She does at least admit the last bit multiple times but barely learns from them (if she even really does).

Nit-picky but lost major points when she just tossed her shirt into the creek. Don't put that shit into the water! Also weird just walking along and, sure, the shirt is torn and bloody, and likely to draw looks to anyone around, but just not wearing a shirt...? Likely to draw more looks. Especially since it wasn't like it was just her shirt that was in poor repair... >>

I should have felt more empathy for Alex. But I didn't. She had such a shitty situation especially with the bit at the end but... I just didn't really feel for her. Think it had to do with the writing and how she was portrayed specifically. She had the feelings of guilt towards the end, she had the thoughts of vengeance but it just wasn't there. She even has the below thoughts but later it's like she it'd never crossed her mind at all.
I have lost everyone that I've ever loved. Is there even a point in finding the ring anymore? What do I have left to live for?

I liked the descriptions of the hellhound and the cover is very fitting. It was good to get Alex's perspective during

Overall, this left me wanting but I'd check out this author again, especially knowing that Moran doesn't care too much about making everything all neatly wrapped up as in an HEA. Speaking my language. I dunno that I'll continue with this series though... I also appreciated how there was no romance/sex here! So rare. Not that I'm against either, but sometimes it's refreshing.

A Fun Read.

Well-written and fast-paced. The supernatural elements were organically done and flowed well with the story. It was easy to connect to Alex and root for her to win. I saw the final reveal coming but there were plenty of twists and turns along the way that kept me guessing.

Alex Hendricks has struck a deal with a demon and now it is time to pay the price. Iroth manipulated her as a child and her soul is now at stake. Her only ally in her dark dealings is her Grandmother, a magick practitioner that is suffering memory problems in assisted living.
Can she find a way of this? What price is she willing to pay for her freedom?
Dealings in the Dark is a wonderful Novella by Samantha Moran. I think this is a great Halloween read. I will start this by saying I felt some of the magick terms were a little overused. I feel like this could be the start of a wonderful series and I would love to see the characters flushed out more. If you enjoy watching Supernatural or shows of the like, I feel like you will enjoy this read!

"Dealings in the Dark" by author Samantha Moran is a very well-written, intriguing story of the paranormal. Alex, a young witch, finds herself in a knock-down, drag-out fight with a demon for the possession of her soul. Happily, this is one of those tales that grabs the reader from the first page and doesn't let go until the very end. While there is some gore contained in the story, it is not overwhelming and does not detract from the dark psychological aspects in play. The pacing of the story is well executed and demonstrates exactly how a shorter work of fiction should flow. A very satisfying read and highly recommended to fans of paranormal short fiction.

An impressive level of realism

The demons in this book live up to their evil reputation in a convincing way. I appreciated the immersive sensory detail in every scene, and the writing was clear, concise, and easy to read. The characters are richly drawn, and the pace is just right. This is not my usual genre, but I enjoyed it alot! As others have said, the ending has an interesting twist, which only underscores the danger that Alex doesn't fully understand she's caught up in.

If you are looking for a spooky October read, look no further. This novella had so many interesting characters and creatures. First of all, there is the demon Iroth, my favorite character, who is very smug and snarky. There is so much about him that is makes you like him even though you also dislike him at the same time. There is the Hellhound that is chasing after Alex throughout and Alex's grandmother who seemed to have some secrets. Also Alex herself, who finds that she can truly do anything if she puts her mind to it. This novella had so many great moments that put you on the edge of your seat. There are so many twists and turns that you don't know where the story is going. This is a must read!

It's not often that a book with only a little over 100 pages grabs me the way this one did. There are even a couple of twists thrown in. Honestly it doesn't even feel like a novella with how full the story is.

Alex made a Faustian bargain as a child. A bargain she didn't even realize she made to begin with. And someone is coming to collect their due.

A short and fun read

This novella is a fun, spooky read, perfect for a quiet and chilly autumn evening. It’s got all sorts of goodies for lovers of the supernatural: a delightfully naughty demon of the crossroads, a practicing witch who happens to be desperate, a binding contract, running water, bad decisions, an unexpected conclusion (which I did NOT see coming and thoroughly enjoyed), and a VERY bad dog. Elements of this story reminded me of both Faust and Secondhand Curses, by Drew Hayes. It’s a well written novella overall by a new author who should definitely continue writing spooky stories, as Moran definitely has a gift for it. I also loved that this could serve as either a standalone story or part of a series (or even a shared universe) featuring any number of characters from this story. Adverbs aside, I am excited to watch this author grow and mature in her craft. Give this one a read.

I got to meet this amazing author at Sinful Signings this year. As I was walking around the event, looking at everything, she noticed that I had a Supernatural tattoo and stopped me, asking if I liked the show. We got to talking, and she recommended that this is a book I might like - Dealing in the Dark. since it has Supernatural themes to it. Witches, Demons, and a Hell Hound named CeCe. She was 100% right. This book was everything. It has the suspense and the twist that you don't expect.

The audible was definitely worth it; Paige did an amazing job with the characters; her portrayal of Iroth had me busting out laughing.

The story follows a young woman having to race against time to complete a deal she made as a young girl or her mortal soul will be tortured. The character Iroth definitely gives Crawly vibes, which was hilarious. I really liked his character even though he was hardly in the book. Gotta love CeCe.

I can't wait to read book 2, Bound and Betrayed.

One of the best horror stories I've read in a while! I loved the demons Dr. Facillie vibes and his cut throat attitude. Moran's writing was descriptive and nasty in the absolute best way! I couldn't even read the eyeball part! This short story had great character development and world building and I can't wait for book 2!

A darker tale with a couple surprises thrown in. Truly glad I was given an advance copy of this. It had enticing characters and left me wanting to know more about their dealings (ha ha) after the final page was turned. I hope to hear/see more about Iroth and Alex in the future.

What. A. Twist! Of all things to happen throughout this story, that twist was the farthest from my mind and it was done so well! I honestly really enjoyed the cat and mouse (and dog) game with Iroth, Alex, and Cece. Iroth is absolutely my favorite with how malicious and evil, yet with that delightful dark humor touch. With the condition that her grandmother was going through, it did hit close to home, but I managed to make it through it. I still got a bit twitchy when it came to the eyes, but everything was so beautifully detailed, that I could picture it in my mind! Now to add the next book to my collection and see what happens next!!

Novella
I honestly feel like I got a bit of the cliff's notes on magick. I don't read too many magick/ demon books.. And I always joke and say I'd like to summon a demon.... After reading this book, maybe I've changed my mind lol... The story starts quickly about a demon wanting a woman to fulfill her end of a deal, otherwise she'll lose her soul. I wouldn't call this scary (I don't think I really scare) and I don't think the TW in the beginning were necessary. Still, it's a fun read and I defo want to read the sequel

Generational magic, hellhounds, spells, a wicked crossroads demon, and a tough as nails FMC who won’t go down without a fight… honestly this novella is everything I love about supernatural horror reads. It’s quick and packs a punch. I loved Alex’s journey and the bond she has with an ailing grandmother. It broke my heart, but also made me smile reminiscing about my own Abuelita. I loved the authors world building and the rules magic must follow. I did not see the ending coming and will be continuing with this series.

Oh my goodness, this book! I had the best time reading this. It was pitched as a story similar to Supernatural, which I loved. BUT that ending, I did not see that coming at all.

This story is about Alex, a young witch who makes a deal with a crossroads demon and must face the consequences. We have witches, demons, hellhounds, tarot and more spookyness. If you're looking for a quick, fast-paced story that does a complete 180 at the end and leaves you searching for book 2, I HIGHLY recommend Dealings in the Dark.

Well that took me by surprise!!
I think the combination of me being a perceptive person and having grown-up reading mysteries, I often see through to what’s going to happen before it does. And I will admit, I was pleasantly surprised and didn’t see a very big part of the story coming.

I thoroughly enjoyed the power struggle between Alex and the spiritual entity. And I feel like this was also a great coming of age story.

This is the second story I've read by Samantha Moran, I really enjoy her writing style and will pick up more of her work. It's a gripping story and fast paced. I didn't expect that ending, which is always great when that happens. Paige Riesenfeld did a fantastic job narrating as always. I really enjoyed the character Iroth, a cruel but suave demon. Paige's delivery of his lines really solidified his personality and made him jump off the page, so to speak. Looking forward to more from this team.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dealings in the Dark by Samantha Moran is a hauntingly beautiful story. I absolutely loved reading and literally couldn’t put it down! As always Samantha gives the best descriptors that make you feel like you’re actually IN the book experiencing what Alexandria (the FMC) is going through. It’s the perfect spooky season read. I’m so excited to read Bound and Betrayed next!
