I watched my father suffer from a horrible decline with dementia for years. Now, every time I forget someone’s name or a place, I get nervous. This book was looking right at me.
It begins with the alarming statistics that Alzheimer’s and dementia cases are growing in numbers right behind 40 percent of adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes. He said it could be genetic which could be determined by medical tests. However, he also said it could be caused by diet, sleep, stress and heavy metals ingested from a variety of products.
The book provides ways to stop the brain from causing memory problems. Basically, he said to stay away from sugar, large types of fish with mercury, high carbs and almost all types of alcohol. And also, marijuana which is a no-brainer if you live in South Carolina where the laws prohibit it. He said excessive sugar “inflames our bodies and brains.” One person after hearing this said, “he must be fun at parties.”
What’s good for the brain? Exercise, sleep at least seven hours a night, eat more fiber, eat organic food, breathe cleaner air and “deal with stress.” He provides lots of lists. He said to build more brain muscle one should do things like read more books, enjoy the moment, join a writing group, take cooking classes, listen to music take dancing lessons, get a pet, plant a garden, and bake. This list continues.
Some points are very helpful which includes recommended supplements, blood tests and recipes. Yet, the book is filled with pages of duplicated information. My guess is that he thinks readers are suffering from memory loss as he repeats often. At the end there’s a very long “to-do list for a healthy brain.”
Most everything in this book are things that we know but put off or ignore. There are some good, solid recommendations that we can do to help take care of our brain. Some of the items in the book can't be helped due to diseases or illnesses that one may have (not taking certain medications). But certainly other healthy choices can be made.
There are scriptures and a christian feeling to this book but not enough to put off a non-christian. The handful of scriptures can be skipped and he does speak of prayer and faith. He doesn't point out that your faith does not need to be christian and that meditation can take the place of prayer if this is not your lifestyle.
While I didn't read anything that I haven't already heard, the recommendations that he makes help. Towards the back of the book are blood tests that are suggested and what the results should be. There are a few recipes and suggestions for supplements. I think this might be a good read for a reminder of things to do to be healthier.
This book takes a look at the intersection of diet, lifestyle, and brain health, offering some practical advice for a healthy brain, especially as we get older. The book is easy to read and understand, starting out identifying those things that impact our brain health (and our health generally) - he calls these the "dementogens".
Spolier alert! -- The solution is "healthy keto" with an emphasis on healthy fats, reducing sugar, and adopting a low-carb approach. Readers familiar with the Bulletproof diet by Dave Asprey will likely notice significant alignment, as they echo many of the same dietary principles.
The book has a helpful and detailed list of medical tests aimed at uncovering underlying health issues that could impair brain function to help you establish a baseline as well as know what to ask your doctor. These include hormone panels, inflammation markers, and nutrient deficiency screenings. This focus on personalization makes it valuable for those seeking a more scientific (or biohacking) approach to improving brain health.
For readers interested in science-backed strategies and just starting to investigate health/wellness choices to influence brain performance, the book is a solid reference. Its strong emphasis on medical testing ensures that it serves as more than just another wellness book, providing practical tools.
Now to see if my doctor agrees with any of the tests. :D
This book contains very helpful information. There are four types of dementia. Alzheimer’s is one of them. And there are five types of Alzheimer’s. Some of our own choices are contributing to dementia. For example, Dr. Colbert lists artificial sweeteners, offending food, medicines and lifestyle choices by name. Dr. Colbert recommends many strategies to prevent and improve memory loss. Recipes are also included. I love this book and recommend it to everyone who wants to avoid Alzheimer's and dementia in their lives and/or the lives of their loved ones. Many, if not most of us know someone with dementia, and there is so much we can learn in order to prevent being affected ourselves. This is an excellent reference book to keep and refer to often. Rarely does a book receive 5 stars from me, but this is a 10!
This is the type of doctor I knew existed but did not know where to find. Dr. Colbert covers every angle about reversing memory loss. It is an easy read and I could not put the book down. It is very informative, great knowledge to implement on my mom who started with Alzheimers a couple of years ago. Don’t check out the book at library, buy it! You will need it for reference.
This is a fact filled book with information about what causes cognitive decline and dementia/Alzheimers. He lists 10 “dementogens” that must be eliminated and then gives a 12 step plan towards brain health. His best piece of advice is to “start today!” I have my “to do list” for 2024.
Informative book on the science behind the causes of Alzheimers and Dementia. It also focuses on the steps that one can take in order to slow down or reverse this.
The book is full of practical information. There is much we can do. Dr Colbert goes through dangers for the brain and gives information about food, activity and sleep. Basically, just get started.
