“Fae were creatures of chaos and mates were the worst of them all.”

The fae live in harmony of light and dark, life and death, sun and moon. Their magic is separated through the balance of the universe, chosen at random by the gods, creating two races of fae. The Seelie, children of the sun. The Unseelie, children of the moon.
The differences between the two races created a divide between the people, only ever mixing when the sun and moon are at equal, and every solar eclipse, the young fae are sorted by whatever magic runs through their veins.

Gold, Seelie.
Black, Unseelie.

Marie, a half-fae, was born in The Seelie Territory. Her skin shimmers gold and the ends of her hair are bleached from too much time spent under the sun. Everything about her screams seelie but on the day of the sorting ceremony, Marie finds out her blood does not run gold but black.

Now she must go to The Unseelie Territory and study magic for the next four years, with the hopes that she can get good enough grades to find a job under The Seelie King and return to her family. Her plan is full proof, that is until she meets The Unseelie Prince. His grumpy persona and midnight eyes stir something inside her that she hasn’t ever felt before. His presence alone threatens to rip every fiber of her being and reduce her to rubble. Marie tries to ignore his pull, but she finds herself drowning in him, until she doesn’t have any air left to breathe.

Blood so Black is a tragic story about fated mates destined to create chaos, not only towards each other but the entirety of fae. This book is the first in a trilogy and ends with a cliffhanger. The themes within this book are Dark and may not be suitable for all readers. Please read the trigger warnings found either in the front of the book or on the author's website.

I was provided an ARC for an honest review.
TW of this book: graphic violence, psychical assault, self-harm, sexual assault, toxic relationships and suicidal thoughts.

This book had 350 pages of pure ecstasy. From the first few pages I was addicted. This is an amazing debut novel! Jewel Jeffers writing style blew me away! This dark romance book is about an intense and destructive love. That even when you are literally made for each other it doesn’t mean you are good for each other.

I adored to going back and forth between Marie and Corivina. Between the present and the past. The author joined past and future perfectly together throughout the whole book so they finally could merge beautifully at the end. But also tragically.

In this world there are the Seelie and the Unseelie. Once you are of age you have to be sorted following the color of your blood. Marie was born in the Seelie part of the world. Her blood is black and she has to leave her family, her love, 24hrs after for the Unseelie world. Her plan is to come back as soon as possible, but plans never go as we want them to go. She gets to know a part of her she never knew …
At the same time we get to know what happened to Corivina hundreds of years before. Who was born in the Unseelie world, but she had gold blood running through her veines. The same rules applied to her.

This book made me feel so many emotions. I was hurt, happy, sad, furious for the characters. I already want to read this book again. I am amazed by what Jewel Jeffers accomplished here and I can’t wait for the 2nd book!

You’re looking for an incredible and breathtaking book unable to put down? This is the one!

I read this book as a arc.

I want to start this review and make note of how refreshing this book was, the concepts took interesting turns to what we normally might expect from a book such as this. The world building and story telling of this author was more than I had expected.

For a debut novel this blew me away, and I truly can not wait for more from the author. The book takes you on not one but two stories of tragedy, from the pov of both Marie and her mother. I was fascinated by this to begin with, but towards the end it had me divided mainly in the fact, I felt more engrossed in the mothers story and all that she had been through. The mirroring and back and forth of stories at times was brilliant, and you truly got a sense for the tragedies this family had lived but at others was an overload of information.

Some key parts of the story for me felt rushed, and I was left wanting more, but this could easily be resolved in the continuing books. This book could have easily been two separate stories one for the mother and one for Marie in the shape of a prequel etc…

SPOILERS*****

The take on mates had me intrigued from start to finish, the types of mates in this book left little to be desired and Marie herself states this on several occasions, even unbeknownst to her, her own mate. The dynamic between them is chaos incarnate and on a base level truly animalistic which was brilliant. There was a nagging part of me that couldn’t let go of the fact that this could be the doing of some sort of curse, to prevent a truly happy mating or maybe it was my own mind trying to find a conclusion to an often times awful fate. The idea of having another person truly for you, but the whole thing being toxic and unbalanced didn’t sit right for me. Sometimes you felt as though it was purely the bond forcing their hands, but I do like the fact that is questioned its not a insta love situation which is refreshing but then when you do get displays of true affection, it floors you and breaks your heart.

The balance between the FMC Marie, who is often times presented as meek and gentle and the MMC Levi was truly an unbalance and for me personally feels like this will allow for a massive personal growth of Marie as an individual and perhaps even them as a mated pair. Which could allow for a truly epic redemption arc, possibly/hopefully the dead aren’t truly as dead as we are left to believe at the end of book one.

Although as mentioned sometimes the relationship feels unbalanced, you do get a true feeling it’s not a single sided struggle being mated, both of them are battling with it, dealing with it or in some cases not dealing with it at all. Levi’s struggle with himself is very evident on several occasions, and you get a little hint at what he as a character could be capable of with Maries influence.

The author makes no secret about this containing tragedy and is truly good on her word, the story was emotive but in a subtle way, but on occasion will just punch you in the gut and your flawed with the artistry of the authors capability of truly capturing pain.

“Please don’t. For eternity, you promised me. You said for eternity. Please.” - I mean come on! How brilliantly heart breaking.

At times there is a lot going on, a lot of information and in some instances I felt like I was reading a history book so didn’t always allow for the reader to feel personally about the characters.

I am intrigued on where this will go with all of the possibilities left open and will be waiting for book two with eager breath.

"We are creatures of chaos."

Thank you Jewel Jeffers for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Blood So Black follows Marie a nineteen year old Seelie, half human and half fae, on a chaotic adventure. When Seelie and Unseelie reach the ages of eighteen to twenty-three their magic in their blood manifests and are required to discover the color of their blood. This determines their race of fae; Seelie (gold blood) or Unseelie (Black blood). Marie has doubts of what race she will be, even though she was born Seelie and shines brighter then the sun. She doesn't want to leave her family or her friend Kolvin. When it's comes to her turn to be sorted she discovers she in fact is Unseelie. Thus begins Marie's adventure into Unseelie where she meets Levi (the handsome mysterious prince of Unseelie), Jessamine, Gregor, and Finch.

Marie, our FMC, is the very definition of chaos. She is hilarious, sincere, loving, fierce, submissive, and so so much more. The perfect example of chaos she is everything all at once.

Levi, our MMC, is handsome, possessive, chilvarous, dark romantic, dominant, insecure, alphahole, and all around just a sad boy. What we look for in a morally grey character. I love him so much and want to protect him, much like Marie wants to do. Also, who knew taking gloves off with your teeth could turn a person on? 🤷‍♀️ knew Kink unlocked.

I love the side characters. Ok, well most of them... 🤣 I loved getting Corivina (Marie's mother's POV chapters). I love Cor but at the end I wanted to smack her. 🤣

What To Expect:
▪︎NA Dark Fantasy Romance
▪︎Dual POV (present-Marie & past- Corivina)
▪︎FMC is BIPOC
▪︎So much spice and smut 🥵🌶
▪︎Fae and Witches
▪︎Book One in the trilogy
▪︎Cheating Trope
▪︎Fated Mates (however I like Jewel's take on this. Being a mate isn't necessarily a good thing)
▪︎Touch her and you die
▪︎One Bed Trope
▪︎Betrayal and tragedy
▪︎Deals
▪︎Nicknames
▪︎Prophecy
▪︎Mine
▪︎Banter
▪︎Main Characters are nineteen (however they are fae and I found the sex scenes didn't bother me being that age)
▪︎Dark Academia
▪︎Trigger Warnings ⚠️ (may contain spoilers)
*Mature Language
* Explicit Sex
*Graphic Violence
*Physical Assault
*Murder
*Sexual Assault (not shown)
*Self Harm
*Suicidal Thoughts
*Dominant/Submissive
*Relationships are toxic and should not be  misconstrued as a depiction of healthy relationships.
*Dubcon
*There is one other that I do not want to say because it's a major spoiler. So, if interested in this book give me a list of your triggers and I will let you know if it's in there or not.
▪︎and more

I love Jewel's writing style. She transported me to this world without it being overly descriptive. I love how she made you fall in love with all the characters at one point or another and then the next page you wanted to ☠️ them. Her take on faes are unique; especially when it comes to mates and certain attributes that we normally associate with the fae. She takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. And in her words "This story is tragic as fvck. You have been warned." And she isn't wrong. My heart is no longer in my chest and it is not beating. I am shattered! I am hoping with book two she can put it back together. 💔

Wow... this was a wild ride. I am not even really sure how I feel about this when I sit down to think about it but generally here goes:
Overall: 3/5 stars
Darkness: 5/5 moons for dark
Spice: 4/5 peppers

This started out with a bang and I really enjoyed both Marie and Corivina. This is a fae fantasy romance story but the author had noted it was 'a tragic as fuck story' so I went into it with that knowledge lol. This story put 'fated mates' to a whole new level. I liked how it focused on how TOXIC being fated mates are instead of the usual obsession with it being perfect. Normally, I am not the biggest fan of going back and forth in time during novels but this was done well enough where I could follow both mother and daughter without confusion. I fell in love with Corivina more than Marie, the daughter. Cor's story was heartbreaking and was written well.

So this started off great but from 60% on it started to drag and was just annoying with the characters just constantly fucking.... then the end was just like..weird.

Anyway, entertaining

excuse me?? that ending???

I am not usually a fan of the dark academia feels. I’m 36 years old and I keep telling myself that I’m over that book theme. But nope. This was great! Now don’t get confused the academic price was not a big part of the underlying storyline at all but Marie and Levi’s storyline does take place at the Unseelie school.

I loved the dual storylines that took place. You got to experience Marie’s mother, Cor’s past and how to built to the current timeline. And how could you not love Marie’s POV.

I did love Marie and Levi’s relationship. I know that there were some uncouth and inappropriate choices that Levi made but come on Marie definitely got him back.

This is a dark fantasy romance. There will be triggers for some but damn it was good.

There will be:

Seelie and Unseelie
Fated mates with complicated histories
Dual story lines spanning 200 years
He fell first
Spiciness
Mostly FM but one FF scene

I was provided an ARC for an honest review.

What I love about debut novels, is an author's ability to grow while even writing the debut itself. Jewel Jeffers did just this - by the end of the novel, I could fully see the progression in personal writing development and growth as an author. This book was a very honest and raw look into the soul of the author, the story itself, the characters, relationships and the tumultuous world (whether fantasy or real). It is a hard reminder of the traumas people face, the secrets they keep and the damaging lies that unfold over time that damage the foundations of others.

While Blood So Black is not my favourite novel I've read this year, it gave me a chance to look into some of my own personal traumas. I was able to connect with the characters, and really understood why they responded the way they did and why their actions were as such. It was a very interesting process to go through. This book is raw, and I really adored Jewel Jeffers ability to really pull that trauma and rage through into her characters.

I do think this will be a novel that new adults can connect with (18 to 24 age range). I say that as a reflection on my younger years and that I would have truly connected with this book during that phase in my life. Blood So Black is genuine, it is moving and it is, in its own way, impactful.

Blood So Black itself is well developed, well written and intriguing. I truly loved the two points of view - Marie and her Mother, Corivina. It provided so much depth and insight - weaving a very full-circle tale.

Jewel Jeffers will be on my watch list, I look forward to continuing this story but also to her growth and development. It takes such tremendous courage to pour your heart, soul and personal trauma onto pages for others to judge.

Jewel has debuted! This book is the first of a trilogy with a HEA eventually. And my goodness this pulled at my heart. There are a LOT of TW’s for assault and mental health woes, cheating, possessiveness etc. so please check out the TW’s before you read as always.

Marie is a darling and Levi truly endeared himself to me. A little loner noodle who is SO possessive. I was absolutely gutted at the end of this story and cannot wait until book 2 is out 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I originally wanted to give this book three stars about halfway through, and then it quickly plummeted to a two star book. I’m not sure what happened here, but the “cute” possessive stuff turned very toxic. And I feel like the relationship they were building for the first 50% of the novel was demolished after they had sex.

Which by the way, there is too much of.

I can appreciate the animalistic side of fae and how they enjoy multiple sex partners, but I swear to god someone was fucking every four pages. Especially the MCs after they had their “revelation.” Like, that’s all they did. Was fuck. Get mad. Fuck. Cry. Fuck. Be sweet. Fuck. Fuck. And that was it. Truly there was no plot, which doesn’t bother me if the romance is good, but alas it fell flat halfway in. Nevertheless, I still finished it but not without skimming the Corivina chapters (which were useless) and after the 16th time they fucked, I skipped over those scenes too.

I don’t mind sex in novels, hell it makes things more realistic, but there is such a thing as too much and this was it.

Starting this book I thought it had great promise, but as it went on it started to feel like it was glorifying unhealthy, abusive, and manipulative relationships while trying to make it seem like the FMC loved it. I kept reading hoping it would get better, but unfortunately it just got worse. I don’t think I’ll read the next book, it feels like the author was trying so hard to make it a dark romance & really it’s just a glorified abusive relationship.

This book took me through a whole range of emotions. I was not able to put down this romantic fantasy.

Summary: We follow two timelines: one of Corivina, which starts about 200 years ago, and the other of Marie, which is in the present day. We follow their lives in this fae world, which is divided into two fae sectors (except humans), Seelie and Unseelie. A fae is classified as Seelie if their blood runs gold on the sorting day, and they must go to Seelie territory to learn magic and, in many cases, make a living. And if a fae's blood runs black, they are classified as Unseelie and have to go to Unseelie territory to learn magic and to make a living.

"In that moment, I realised I was fully lost. I had nothing...no home."
Corivina, who was born an Unseelie, got sorted as a Seelie, which resulted in her abandonment by her family. Left alone, she has various choices to make. Would she make the right ones?

Marie, whose skin shimmers with gold and who was born a Seelie, was sure to be sorted as a Seelie until her blood ran black on the sorting day. She doesn't want to leave anything to chance and has planned everything. She will study Unseelie magic for four years and then come back home, hoping the Seelie King will give her a position in his court.

"She marked what is mine"
The one thing she has not planned is meeting the Unseelie prince and facing a strong attraction to him.

Plot and Writing: I loved the writing, and it just kept getting better and better. The world that the author has created and the rules and traditions that have been put in place are fascinating to read. The plot mainly focuses on the romance, spice, and complicated relationships, which are beautifully portrayed in this book. I loved the mirroring effect of the two timelines.
The plot ends on a very big cliffhanger and had me sobbing by the end.

Only the details of the magic system left me a bit wanting. Although the magic is majorly categorized into two parts: anything alive and warm goes to Seelie, and anything related to shadows, dark, and dead is for Unseelie, I wanted a bit more details and a description of the magic system that the author is going for.

Characters: I loved all the characters in this book, as they are not just good or just bad. Each and every character has layers, and many of them are morally gray, pointing to the fact that Fae were creatures of nature. Their magic was bound to elements... Nature was fickle, brash, chaotic, and so were the fae. We were beasts who walked among humans, causing havoc everywhere we could, not sparing ourselves either.

Corivina was my favourite at the start, and then it kept changing from her to Levi, then to Markos, and then to Marie, and so on. I loved the development arcs of each and every character.

Relationships: Oh, the relationships in this book are so intricate that I was left wondering how the plot would resolve them. I loved the path that the author took for the fae soulmates. Although the whole purpose of the mates is to be perfect halves, the whole relationship is very chaotic, unbalanced, and unsettling. The mates cannot live without each other; they are very very possessive, and they can destroy anything and everything for each other, even themselves.

Romance and Spice: It's toooooooooooo spicy for me, but at the same time, I love the heartfelt moments that followed the spice. It would be inaccurate to say that I loved Marie and Levi's relationship, and I don't believe the author intended for it to be so, but I loved their chemistry, their longing for each other, and the way they both worked to develop it into a balanced and non-toxic one.

Tragedy : This book has so many tragic moments; it is incredibly depressing, and the story is triggering. Therefore, I advise readers to read the trigger warnings before starting the book. It helps that the author made this clear from the book's outset.

Recommendation: Any reader of romantic fantasy who is okay with all the trigger warnings and the spice will undoubtedly like this fantastic book.

I received an ARC of the book, for an honest reviewJewel Jeffers

Thank you to the author with providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review ✨

What did I just read?! What did I just READ?! This book was so addicting to read I couldn’t put it down I had to know what happened next and it was hard not to think about this book whenever I couldn’t read it.

I loved this world made of Seelie and Unseelie Fae, I thought it was really interesting and the world building was not hard to understand or grasp at all which I always appreciate when reading fantasy.

This book is full of drama. Like so much and I ate up every second of it. The FMC was raised Seelie and after discovering she’s Unseelie she has to go live her life away from family and her love. She’s automatically drawn to the Unseelie Prince and he’s so hot and cold towards her at first but their relationship isn’t even half of it.

This book made me swoon, made me excited, sad, so frustrated at times and by the end, completely shocked and in disbelief.

🌶”books with spice please” spice rating:

Sexual tension: 5/5 so much tension between the FMC
And MMC and other characters the
FMC meets omg
Penis/pussy: 2/5 there wasn’t much description at all
and it was pretty average!
Intercourse: 5/5 ummmmm there was a a couple of
Spicy scenes before the couple gets
Together snd then all they do once
together is fuck lmao
Communication: 2/5 not great at communicating at all tbh but there were a couple of sexy parts spoke 😏

Erotic/kinks/tropes: not super erotic/kinky but they do it knowing others can hear, there’s public play at one point too. The “only one bed” trope, jealous/possessive alpha male, mates
Overall: 🌶🌶🌶🌶/5

It’s not everyday I’m able to enjoy reading two main romance plot in a book, the mother and the daughter entertwine story nonetheless!
I thought it would be boring to read about the mother’s life in the past chapters. But turns out, they are my favorite. I experienced first love, broken hearted by her past lover whom she still reeling to let go, feel the ease breath come again as she encountered with new lovers. It was beautiful and sad and tragic.
We got the mother (Corivina) past chapter side by side with her daughter (Marie) present timeline.
What happened in the past is connected with Marie’s timeline. The current situation is resulted from what the mother and her lover’s decision in the past.

Whilist I said Corivina’s chapters are my favorite, Marie chapters are also entertainly indulging. Born and live her entire life as Seelie fae only to discover her blood sings black at the Sorting Ceremony. Just like sun and moon never going to be together, when does Seelie and Unseelie could be live in peace?

There are some of Marie’s action consirable as cheating but thankfully she did realized it and feel unconfortable and resoute to untangle her knot with the other person who she cheated on.
The major let down about this book is I feel the book is rushing the pace about the mating issue.
But I sort of understand why the author did that when I finish reading Blood so Black.

This is really good book. One delivers all of the first book should be. The interesting introduction, setting the background and everything, and the most important is it successfully lead the reader to wonder what will happen next for Corivina and Marie’s life.

I was given an e-ARC of this book by the author and thank you, Jewel for giving me the opportunity to read your debut. This was a really solid debut novel. It kept me interested and thats always important. It’s the first book in a series so we don’t get a lot of conflict until the very end which is setting up the next in the series. This book builds the new relationship between our FMC Marie and her love interest Levi while also giving us a POV of her mother’s past. Fae are really, honestly, primal and vicious creatures and I enjoyed the way they were portrayed in this story. Marie finds out her blood is different and now she has to live with the fae of a different blood and lifestyle. And we go through some ups and downs with her. With the setup for the next book at the end it will be interesting to see what the next book will contain as a lot of the people in this story caused a lot of problems for others by keeping secrets for far too long. And in the end a lot of people got hurt. Oof. Rough. And the ending… well… let’s just say she can rip a heart out, eh? Absolutely crushing.

Full of lots of yummy spice and a toxic relationship, Blood so Black is intense and emotional and heartbreaking. But all in the good ways we choose to torment ourselves with when we read.

On the day of sorting, Marie learns that her blood flows Unseelie. Having been born Seelie, lived her entire life Seelie, and almost being the very embodiment of Seelie with her gold-glistened skin, she is naturally distraught at the thought of moving away from her home. From her family.

The fact that Unseelie territory is cold and dark just emphasises how different her life is now. And worse still, she can’t explain the draw she has to the Unseelie prince. Levi. For she is marked by another. So why does her heart scream 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦 every time she looks as Levi?

Wow these Fae sure are a horny bunch! I think the book was at least 60% sex. But somehow there was still so much plot that I wouldn’t class it as erotica.

Marie and Levi at times act like the 19 year olds they are. Doing stupid things and playing silly games to get the other’s attention. To hurt each other.

I don’t really understand her friendship with Jessamine though to be honest. She seems kind of toxic. I thought maybe it was a Fae thing at first but no one else seems to act like her so…

The story flits back and forth between Corivina’s past and Marie’s present. A fair few parallels between mother and daughter’s lives too but with some vital differences. Honestly if Corivina had just spoken up about her history, a lot of heartache could have been avoided.

There are a fair few triggers in this book so definitely read the warnings if you are sensitive to any subjects.

Unfortunately there were a fair few grammatical and spelling mistakes. Some typos and tense changes too, but as this is an ARC a lot of these may be edited out before the final version is released.

But a cliffhanger ending! With the next book not due out until next summer! AND IT’S A TRILOGY! I might die of anticipation. I have a couple of theories as to what might come next for Marie, especially, but I shall have to be patient to find out *sobs*

ARC kindly provided in exchange for my honest review.

This book started off really promising. Fae aging from eighteen to twenty-three were required to discover what color their blood ran to identify what race of fae they were. Magic wasn’t dependent on your heritage, It was chosen by the gods at random, and seemingly without a rhyme or reason to it. The ceremony was held to determine what magic ran through your veins. Gold—Seelie. Black—Unseelie. The two races only merged when the sun and moon shared the sky: dawn and dusk, and the eclipses. The eclipses were the only time when common fae were allowed to mix—the lunar eclipse for partying and the solar for the ceremony.

These characters are frustrating as hell. They have no substance outside of each other. Marie was moved to the unseelie side to train & learn about the unseelie but after meeting her mate its like poof all of that is gone. Theres no drive or desire to be anything but a mate & from that point on the book is nothing but them having sex. As for Levi, all of the attempts at possesive stuff is really toxic & hidden under the guise of them being mates because their frenzy is uncontrollable. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Instead of wasting words on all these lame sex scenes, there could have more intimate & cute scenes to strengthen their bond with each other.

All the two main characters do is have sex. Outside of the sex you see that these characters have no real chemistry that wasn’t from the mating bond. Which is important since

Some aspects I do love is how Carvelinia deeply loves her daughter. Its fierce, protective & beautiful. But the bond they have gets shattered because of secrets.

Corivina- Mother- Seelie
Darius- Stepfather Seelie
Maurice- Father- Human -dead
Markos- King of Unseelie- Cors Ex- Levis dad
Levington/Levi- Prince of Unseelie- Maries Mate
Jessamine- Friend- Unseelie

So this book can get a bit confusing stick with it. So you have 2 different stories being told in this book. You have her mother's(Corivina)story & then you have Maries (her daughter) story. Both of these stories are being told parallel to each other. The storyline is dragged out alot. To many sx scenes towards the end. I like the dual stories but personally I feel like the beginning of Cor/Markus story could of been a preNovella & would of read really well. Then pick up Cor chapters come in towards the last half of the book to flush out the storyline after Levi & Marie mated. Definitely will read book 2.

Synopsis:

So you learn about the seelie (light) & the unseelie (dark) & wild fae. The way that they sort them is a bit different than some other books. Every 3 to 5 years there's a ceremony where you drink some sort of a elixir & you cut their hand & the blood will be either gold for seelie or black for unseelie but you can also choose to go wild. It's really a toss up what you'll get but many end up going into their ancestral sorting.

*Prologue starts with Corivina (Cor)(Marie's Mom)POV 200 years before start of the book. Cor was born into the Unseelie court even looks unseelie but was sorted into the Seelie (light) court. She really likes Markos (unseelie prince) who she'd been with since she was 17. He marks her as a sign of commitment(like a vamp bite) (but a bite doesnt always mean this as many can be brokenby simply breaking/scratching out the marks/ some mark are purely for pleasure/venom) every member has to go to the palace of their court to learn about their magic for 4 years. During this time you can only see someone from the other courts during certain times of the year where you can travel to the wall & cross thru neutral territory & see your family or friends. It's unclear if this restriction only for the people that are in the academy or if this is for everyone (ie kings can portal to each palace etc).

Cor meet a guy(Darius) at the wall while she is waiting for Markos. Guy says Markos should reestablish their bond as the mark is fading and someone could swope in and "take" her.

Then ch 1 starts with Marie POV. (It switches to past Cor alot too ) You soon realize in the 1st few chp that Marie is Cor (and Maurices) daughter. You also find out Maurice is human and is dead & was killed by Cors husband/Maries Stepfather Darius who she calls dad/father & respects. She is aware he killed her father. "In my mother’s two-hundred and twenty-three years of life, I was her only child. She had been married to my stepfather for a hundred and eighty years before she met my birth father. My stepfather (Darius) was okay with her being romantically involved with a human, but when he found out his wife’s only heir was not his, the creature within him flipped and he impulsively killed my birth father." In this book everyone is very fluid with their relationships taking on multiple partners and there are mate bonds which produce a lot of children (50+) but they're rare because mates almost become obsessed with each other & it can be a bit chaotic. We find out Darius is marked by Cor but she isnt marked by him. Theres a picture of Maurice in their home.

Marie goes through this initiation ceremony. she looks very Seelie/Light (ie gold tones/Curly bleached from the sun hair) when she is sorted she bleeds black unseelie/Dark. Meaning she will have to leave her family and go to the unseelie palace to learn her craft. She also meets the unseelie Prince Levi who was being sorted. She is drawn to him. Her guy best friend Kolvin is sorted into Seelie. They declare their love and mark one another but Marie is skeptical as fae live for a very long time. All of this happens before 10% of the book.

There is a 50' high wall that separates the different courts with a neutral zone & portals through these walls & she is meant to meet her escort at 1 of the portals and when she gets into the carriage she finds out that the unseelie prince she met is her escort. She has a very strong reaction to him and feels like that he is hers(mine) which she tries to shake off and then he sees that she's marked.

**Flashbacks to Cor happen mostly every other chapter ill add all her flashbacks into this section as itll be easier to follow.** She goes to meet Markos in the neutral zone (who we find out is a prince). He says his father the king of the unseelie will be retiring. Markos has known this for over 2 and a 1/2 years & never told Cor. He says that he loves Cor and he thought that he would have more time to be able to marry her but that since she is seelie he couldn't marry her but he could keep her as a consort and she could bear his children and she said heck no & severed her mark from him. She never marked him. FB2 199yrsago. She is working as an herbalist apprentice her last year of school . She felt like Markos led her on & that she was an idiot for allowing her to get complacent & not do as good as she could have in school. Markos shows up saying he still loves her and when she asked about marriage she still says you can't be with him she told him to leave. He grabs her bites her releasing alot of venom & r@ped her. They make a blood binding deal to never speak of what the prince (Markos) did if he'd leave her alone & give her coin since her family disowned her for being seelie & Markos agreed. n 20% . FB3 Cor severes all her marks with Markos. She goes into a store that is owned by a witch(Ginger) who does a reading on her and tells her that she'll have 3 great loves in her life. "One who will break me, one who will heal me, and one whom I will destroy?” FB4 2 years after r@pe 197. She goes to a festival where she runs into Darius who was the male she saw at the wall when she broke up with Markos 3 yrs ago. Darius is 80 years older than Cor. FB5 Cor gets to know Darius and working through some of her issues stemming from Markos. Darius is a great book husband. She loves him in a different way than she loves Markos. FB6 The story jumps a few years and she goes to a party with Darius & Markos just so happens to be there after he ascends to the king position & he asked Cor to marry him again. She says no. FB7 3 years after the party & Markos is still sending Cor things like pink roses, winter earrings etc. ( 10 yrs after they broke up ) Darius proposes & she asks him to mark her. He does. 60% Markos continued for 170 years to send her flowers. 64% Ginger the witches great grandchildren reopen her shop years after she died. Maurice is human & his twin Melinda is a witch. She calls Cor the raven. Cor is drawn to them. 80% Core hangs out with Maurice a
realizing that she likes him & wants to have him as a pet. So she talks to Darius about it & he's cool with it esp since hes human & will eventually die. 82% flashbacks to 1 yr into a relationship with Markos where he gave her the queens necklace and told her that hes loved her since they were babes. 87% She starts being intimate with Maurice and she knows that Darius is her one & only but her beast craves Maurice even though she knows that she's going to have to let him go eventually. A week later she is at home with Darius to wake him up and he gets up grab the sword goes down to the witches shop murders Maurice & decapitates his sister & when Cor shows up he tells her that she's pregnant & that he can smell the baby & the baby is Maurices. His beast flipped. She left Darius & moved back into her room at the inn where she raises Marie for 5 years. The rest of Cor chapter after this line up with Maries present storyline.

Marie travels with Levi to the Unseelie palace Lots of tension. Theres an academic wings where she meets her guide Jessamine who she finds attractive. Then she makes it to the assembly hall where the king will speak. So you find out that Levi's dad is Markos (Maries Mom Cors ex) You find out that Markos never married & that Levi's mother tried to assassinate Markos before she was killed. He also mentions Levi in his speech & about how he needs to produce heirs if any of the females are interested. She gets called by the king to have a private meeting with him and the Prince. He has a conversation with her and she mentions "I’m half-human. My mother, fae, Corivina Foxglove. My father, human, Maurice. I don’t know his surname. He’s dead, died before my birth, killed by my adoptive father, Darius Foxglove. You may know him. He’s the commander of the Seelie Army.”

Markos ask Marie about Cor. Markos also touched his raven tattoo (represents unseelie court) on his chest. He also called Marie "Little Raven".

Marie goes to a party and she makes out with Jessamine to make Levi jealous. In one of her classes that she has Levi and he is her partner for the year when she goes to touch him they both have a physical reaction. All fae have the same beasts inside them that wants to feed fck and fight.
Jessamine potential partner Gregor Calls Marie out because she's making Kolvin look weak because she essentially cheated on him to make Levi jealous when she did not have a conversation with Kolvin about being with other partners. Marie goes to class where Jessamine is looking guilty when Levi walks in Marie can smell that they had sx & Jessamine marked him. She gets super angry and harden herself like her mother warned her to do as unseelie are ruthless. Marie goes to King Markos & ask to use a portal mirror to talk to her mother. She speaks to her. School daily life happens.

Marie & Jess make up and become friends again.

Marie spends most of the book flip flopping between wanting to go home back to seelie at the end and being pulled towards Levi.

At about 50% of the 1st visit Marie can have with her family happens I'm serious tell her what's a month since she has been at the Unseelie court. She also connects with Levi and decides shes going to break it off with Kolvin as she loves him as her best friend but Levi is different. When she's home Kolvin essentially rips her a new one because she really messed up by not being honest with him. She has sx with Levi & they both mark each other and they realize they are mates. 63% King Markos tells them thet will have a mate announcement/ crowning of Princess Marie the next day. Marie mirrorred Cor to tell her and she didnt have the best reaction as she'd only be able to see marie 8 times a year.
Up till about 80% its all mating/fcking which is kind of boring. Then she takes her 2nd trip to see Cor on Samhain. When she sees her mother Cor notices the family heirloom necklace that Levi gave her and loses her shit. Cor tells her to give it to her so she does. 82% She starts to realize that Levi is getting super possessive. She finally addresses it and They come to a better understanding of each other. Cor and Darius Come to the unseelie palace for a visit and Markos lets it slip that Cor is his inspiration for his raven emblem and that they were more than lovers. Cor sees all Maries bites. All hell break loose as Cor gos and confronts Levi. She makes the comment that hes just like his father and that's why she cut the baby out of her body. You find out that Cor was pregnant by Markos. Markos grabs Cor by the throat & put them in a protective buddle. Marie uses the queen necklace to penetrate the shadowd where Markos sent the shadows back and levi steps infront of Marie gets hit by them and died. Marie had a bracelet put on her so she wouldn't kill herself because she was now the heir to the unseelie court unless markos's had another child. "He ruined me, then he destroyed her. My flower who I vowed to protect. Now I was going to kill him. He deserved to die for destroying my daughter, the love of my fucking life."

Cor ends the book by promising justice in killing Markos for all he's done.

Ugh

I’m giving 3 stars because despite the fact that this book had me constantly rolling my eyes and was very repetitive at times, the ending was crazy and so I still feel inclined to continue. I’m hoping the writing is improved in the rest of the series.

I was given the ARC for the debut novel Blood so Black by Jewel Jeffers
.
.
"MATE"....Oh My God....Finally....Got chills...This book completely blew my mind.
.
.
The way Author wrote dual POV with dual timeline...It was incredible...The ending broke me....It hurts...But I won't change a thing...These are the events that makes this book so good...

It contains all the best tropes you can imagine...enemy to lovers, fated mates, single bed at the inn, trauma, tragedy, complicated past...wow....I'm pretty sure it's gonna make on some top fantasy novels list...

Can't wait for the next part...You should probably go and give it a read...it's 100% worth it...

2.5 stars

It felt rushed. I get that they were mates but there was no reason to push them to get together when there was barely any chemistry between them - that wasn’t from the bond. Also the ending???

I received an E-Arc of Blood so Black (BSB) from Jewel Jeffers and this is my honest review.

Blood So Black pulled me into a whirlwind of emotions, just as Jeffers warned under the content warnings for this book. It was unlike any other book I have personally read so far, and I say that in a good way. There were moments that were sweet and hopeful, sad and traumatic, warm and made me laugh out loud, and dark and heartbreaking. Experiencing these emotions is one of my favorite parts of reading BSB. This for me is a truly dark romance book.

I can’t stop thinking about this book. The characters are either severely flawed, victims, or sometimes a little bit of both. Jeffer’s really brought in the complexity in them because they were not perfect heroes and heroines to me. The fae in BSB are primal and predatorial. They are severely passionate as they are and beautiful. They are unapologetically dark.

There were also moments of passion that someone would yearn for and passion that someone should turn and run away from. I felt the different types of love…love that is all-consuming, love that should not even be called love, love that hurts and harms, love from family, and love that transcends.

The burn between Marie and the MMC did have me in a chokehold.

I had a great time with Jeffer’s prose and the voices of the characters. I thought it was relatable with funny and sweet moments. I immediately grew attached to the characters.
Jeffers did a great job of setting up this first book for the next 2 remaining books in this trilogy. I am not sure what is going to happen next, but I am eagerly waiting to continue this journey. I am all in—tears, heartache, and all.

As I said, I can’t stop thinking about Blood So Black. I am obsessed. If anyone that has read it wants to further discuss this book, please dm me here or on IG! I’d love to chat about it!

CONGRATULATIONS, JEWEL JEFFERS!

Well this babe was well written. The plot was decent and the smut didn’t feel too technical although descriptive. Didn’t really understand stand the purpose of Corvina’s chapters (Marie’s mom) until the end. I sympathize with her but feel more for her husband, Darius. — That is not regarding the abuse and pain she suffered through, rather her inability to connect with Darius, due to both Markos and Maurice. Darius one fuck up puts him in jail and he’s been confused about why and has been trying to make amends. (Hope those to figure out how to work it out in the next books).

I thought certain parts were rushed and could’ve easily been expanded on with a few extra pages to the book. For example Marie’s friendships. Ironically I think it was intentional due to the fact that the author kills Levi, Marie’s fated mate. Plot twist? Yes. Sadly it is the thing that will likely prevent me from continuing the series. To my understanding the following two books in the series depicts Marie’s grief and bonds her to his half-brother (someone only mentioned in book 1). All cool with finding love again I just REALLY dislike when the MC other love interest is a family member, especially a brother.

It’s rare, if ever I read a story with that trope.

Would’ve preferred if there was a way to bring Levi back and allow the pair to grow as a couple and try to find a healthy way to love each other as mates.

So yea. Good read to pass the time but be prepared for the turns.

i did not enjoy this book. it felt like i was reading a wattpad fanfic. the leading female felt very 2-d and honestly i thought she was a cry baby. i got about 53% into the book and was waiting for something to happen anything and nothing did. it was a lot of back and forth between the characters. i only finished the book because i don’t like to leave books unfinished, but to me it was a huge waste of my time.

Blood So Black is a beautifully written debut book and I LOVED every word of it.

I adore the MFC, Marie and have grown to love the MMC, Levi. They have stolen my heart. Corivina...she is so fierce and at the same time, not. Her story is both beautiful and torturous, I love it. I really like the other side/supporting characters, but none more so than Jessamine. I hope she shows up in the story in the future!

The plot of Blood So Black is well planned out, the story is easy to read, and it has lots of HOT smutty spice! If you like dark fantasy romance with fae, fated mates, academia feels, and tragedies, then you've got to read this book!

I cannot wait to further explore this world in the second book. And to see if my heart will ever heal from that ending! Looking forward to summer 2023!

Warning: this book does contain some dark/sensitive material and it will probably make you cry, but it is SO worth it!

could have been amazing

The idea was terrific, black and gold blood and the main character having to switch courts but the ending was awful and made me feel like I just wasted all of my time reading this stupid book.

Oh ok oh wow. This book has truly blown my mind. The depth of its storytelling, the complexity of the characters, and the intricate plot have left me in awe. Each page has been packed with surprises and twists and turns that kept me engaged from start to finish.

The characters in this book are truly remarkable. Marie, the protagonist, is a fae with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She is faced with the task of learning the way of the enemy, all while navigating the complex dynamics of her magical heritage. Her mother, a formidable presence, adds an extra layer of depth to the story with her unwavering love and support.

Levi had an aura so strong that he lit up the pages when he's interacting with Marie. His presence was magnetic, drawing her in with every word and action. It was as if the air around them crackled with electricity whenever they were together, making it impossible to look away. Marie could feel herself becoming addicted to his energy, and she couldn't help but wonder how someone could exude such a powerful aura.

The storyline is a tapestry of interconnected stories. Each character's journey is woven into the fabric of the story, creating a domino effect that ripples throughout the narrative. The intricate web of relationships, betrayals, and secrets adds depth and complexity to the narrative, making each page turn even more exciting.

The plot is a masterpiece of suspense and intrigue. It twists and turns, keeping the reader on the edge of their seats. The author skillfully builds tension and anticipation, leaving the reader longing for more. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, another revelation would emerge, leaving me breathless.

The word building in this book is nothing short of magnificent. The author effortlessly creates vivid imagery and carefully crafted descriptions that bring the world of this story to life. Each word choice is deliberate and contributes to the overall immersive experience.

The author's use of vivid descriptions and emotive language truly brought the story and characters to life. I found myself fully immersed in the world of Marie, Levi, and Corivina, feeling their every emotion and experiencing their journey alongside them. Not only were the intimate scenes beautifully written, but the plot twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. Jewel Jeffers is truly a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

In conclusion, this book has completely blown my mind. The characters, the storyline, the plot, and the word building are all exceptional. It is a story that will stay with me for years to come. If you haven't already, I highly recommend giving this book a try. It will take you on a wild ride filled with magic, mystery, and unforgettable characters.

Blood So Black is the first book in the Fae of The Sun and Moon trilogy. It is a dark and spicy romantasy. The author's TW clearly states: "This story is tragic AF. You have been warned." I was warned, and yet I still wasn't prepared.

There are two separate story lines that come together beautifully in this book. The first is about Corivina and starts about 200 years in the past. The second is about Marie which occurs in the present.

The book is set in a fae realm, where a diamond wall separates Seelie from Unseelie fae. The Seelie fae have golden blood whereas Unseelie's blood runs black. A sorting ceremony brings their magic to life and determines whether they are children of light, life and growth (Seelie) or children of dark, death and decay (Unseelie). The two groups rarely come together but families are frequently torn apart when children of one group are found to manifest the other's magic, and are forced to move to the other side of the wall.

Corivina was born to an Unseelie family, however her sorting ceremony required her to move across the wall. Her partner professed his love to her and made promises to marry her after her mandatory training in the Seelie territory. Doing so would allow her to return home. Unfortunately, not all plans come to fruition and Corivina has to make a life for herself in the Seelie territory.

Marie was born to a Seelie family, however her sorting ceremony required her to move across the wall. Her best friend professed his love for her and promised to marry her after her mandatory training in the Unseelie territory allowing her to return home in a few years. Then she meets the Levi, the Unseelie heir to the throne, and suddenly her future isn't as clear as she once thought.

There is so much more to this book, but I don't want to risk spoiling it for you. I loved the story and was captivated from the very first page. It was fascinating reading about these two strong female characters and how their lives changed. The author took me on an emotional ride where I experienced joy, sorrow, passion, pleasure, heartbreak and pain. Even when I could see the writing on the wall for some events, I couldn't stop myself from being carried away.

I am counting the days until I can read the second book and hopefully find some healing words for my broken heart. I definitely recommend this book if you're a fan of romance and fantasy.

Thank you to Jewel Jeffers for an ARC.

When Jewel reached out to me asking if I wanted to read her debut novel I was honored that she trusted me to read the story she created. Let me preface that I am strictly a reader and do not write. Bear with me through this review.

The first 50% of the book is a lot of angst, heartbreak, young adult drama and almost caused me to DNF. But I committed to it so I pushed through and I’m so glad I did. The last half was a wild ride of highs and lows, love and hate, happiness and heartbreak. The last half was a SOLID 4 ⭐️ the first half was what lowered it just a little for me.

A PERSONAL preference for me as a reader, I get really annoyed by the young 18-20yo whiny smitten FMC. It’s just not my cup of tea… but I’m also old so there’s that.

Marie’s internal dialogue in the beginning was eye rolling at best. Jewel however balanced 19yo Marie’s chapters nicely though with a dual POV of Corvina’s flashbacks which I enjoyed. CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS.

I LOVED the Seelie vs Unseelie worlds. Complete opposites of each other in every way. This winter loving night owl would THRIVE being UnSeelie.

Jewel’s writing is very reminiscent of fast paced Wattpad story. This isn’t an insult because I happen to love so many stories I have found on Wattpad. Perfect TBR fluffers. If you love these quick stories that make 400 pages feel like 200 then Jewels writing is going to be perfect for you! When we chatted my friend Mariah thought it was only 200-300 pages also 😊 122k words flew by

Her writing isn’t very lyrical but it will have you feeling all the emotions. I found myself getting teary eyed and laughing out loud multiple times (the snowball fight was freaking precious). The last 5% wrecked me with every single emotion. Whew 😅.

Overall a solid debut story. Looking forward to seeing what journey Jewel takes us on in book 2.

Congratulations on doing the damn thing Jewel!!!!

PS If you hate the fated mates trope, and the word mate being used consistently then this won’t be the book for you.

I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoyed having Marie's present and Corivina's past run side by side so we can see the parallels in parts of their lives. I thought it would be confusing but it really wasn't. The writing and pacing were great and I am pleasantly shocked to find out this is Jewel Jeffer's debut novel. I struggled to put this down and only did so to sleep. I did consider not reading this book yet thinking I wasn't in a fantasy mood but the world building wasn't vast and extensive (which I personally prefer) within this book but the story was still well rounded and the world still felt fully established.

I adore Marie, I love the sexually open and positive nature of the Fae within this book. We love a girl who holds no shame. Fae love to fuck and she was getting hers and then some. Marie's relationships with everyone around her are so special and hold a purpose for her and the story but her one with Levi had me on a rollercoaster. I loved the sweet things he did for her whilst also being an arsehole but didn't always love how overly possessive, bordering on controlling, he was (though it was understandable given the nature of their relationship). I love that Corivina raised Marie to be the strong Fae she is and that she stood her ground when Levi did what he did (iykyk) and didn't allow her connection to him swallow her up and cloud her morals. Again, parralelled with Corivina and her past. Both females knew what they deserved and both made them know it. Marie's punishment of Levi wasn't torture by any means but he found it tørturous and I loved that she held strong to make her point.

Corivina's strength is admirable and the darkness she struggles with and the shadows she runs from felt familiar. As a mother, her unrelenting and unconditional love for Marie is something I felt deeply too. I had guessed who Corivina's third love from the prophecy would be but the way it came about was absolutely heartbreaking and I sobbed. I'm gonna need book two ASAP cos I am not going to stop thinking about these characters.

“Marie, I’ve imagined eating your p*$sy since the first moment I saw you. I don’t think I can resist tasting you. But if you don’t do as I say, that’s all I’ll do, just a taste.”

Overall rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🔥🔥🔥✨

Let me start off by saying, that I loved the fresh approach to the fated mates trope! In this world mates aren’t the epitome of stars, rainbows and hearts shooting out of the characters’ peaches 😏 no. Mates are the worst pairings and bring chaos and doom! I also really liked the two different territories of the Unseelie and Seelie with their extreme climatic differences and, of course, the fae with their different blood colors and physics.

What really needs to be highlighted is the dual-time storytelling. I became more and more invested in Corivina’s story (the FMC's mother), even if it took some time to get used to the switching back and forth. It‘s hard to get invested equally in two stories but the author did an amazing job imo.

Marie and Levi, our main characters, are young, okay? If I'm not mistaken, 19 years old—they're not supposed to act/think like they have it all together. They don't. And that's okay and excuses a lot of juvenile behavior + their bond messes pretty badly with their rational thoughts. Yah, I’m looking at you Levi. Marie's time at the Unseelie school brings a lot of fun, confrontations and misunderstandings, yah, even provocative high-school vibes.

The spice became very frequent and that's another thing I liked about this book. It was hot and perfectly in line with the ever-over-the-top horny nature of the fae! The plot went along and when shit hit the fan, the tragedy unfolded fast-paced and brutal. The cliffhanger leaves you aching for the second book and multiple scenarios pop up.

Tropes:
🌑 Fated mates with a twist
🌕 Touch her & ☠️
🌑 Possessive MMC
🌕 Lots of spice
🌑 Tragedy
🌕 Dual-time lines
