Normally DI Jordan Carr’s cases land on his desk. This one comes from his wife…
An old friend has called her in a state of distress. Her mother has failed to keep an appointment and disappeared.
As concern grows for the missing person, another woman’s body is discovered in a canal on the outskirts of Liverpool. The victim shows signs of having been restrained.
When the two investigations begin to overlap, Carr and his team begin to worry that the missing woman might share the same fate. Feeling the onus of responsibility, Carr goes out on a limb to help.
But post-lockdown, with nerves on edge and tempers frayed, the investigation is hanging on a thread, and misunderstandings and mishaps might let the chances of a successful outcome slip through the gaps.
A young woman found in the bay with strange injuries and a few days later, an older woman goes missing. Are the crimes related? That becomes the over arching question for DI Jordan Carr and Stella May. The investigation leads into some very dark places of the criminal world and keeps the reader on edge.
As usual, good read, fast pace, and before you know it, you've stayed up til 1 a.m. to finish it.
A good story, fairly complex and enough clues to keep me guessing. I enjoyed reading it, especially as it's set around where I used to live and I could visualise plenty of the locations. I'll look out for more from this author.
I am taking one star off five for two things - too much him/her going on and distracting from a mostly good police procedural; and the final verbal exchange on the railway station platform between Beetham and the heroes was frankly totally unbelievable.
Good story, a bit slow sometimes. But a great read . Love that there is a list of characters at the end (not that many though) because the last book I read I had to go back and make my own list there were so many names . Think all authors should do it. Would recommend.
Took me a while to read this. I’m not familiar with the English terms (I’m American) and it often felt like I was reading a foreign language! That was actually kind of fun trying to guess what was meant by all the unfamiliar expressions. That said, it did take me a while so not too keen on reading any more.
Having not read any books in this series previously, it took me a bit to get interested in the story. I stuck with it and was glad I did. The characters were well developed and engaging, and the story was with the read.
KINDA TALKY BUT A PRETTY GOOD WHO-DONE-IT. I DID FIGURE OUT THE KILLER AFTER THEY WERE INTRODUCE INTO THE STORY. I AGREE THE ENDING WAS NOT TO MY LIKING BUT SINCE I HAD BEEN WARNED I WAS READY FOR IT. ;D
I enjoyed reading this book - Interesting characters and the mystery itself. I also liked the details of police procedures, but would have appreciated translation of the slang for a non-brit.
Not even the car chase at the end was exciting. I'm sure if I had read books 1 - 4 I would be more invested in the characters but I didn't and I'm Not.
