Saving the world was hard. That was nothing compared to raising three kids…
They said I was gifted. The most powerful mage born to our bloodline in more than a century.
The dark sorcerer didn’t stand a chance.
I was a hero. I was famous. I was bad ass.
But that was twenty years ago.
Now, I’m married with three kids.
I have the best lawn in our suburban neighborhood.
I have a little more around the mid-section than I used to, but I’ve still got it.
There’s been a disturbance in the ether.
Strange creatures are terrorizing my community.
Has the dark sorcerer escaped his arcane prison?
Do I still have what it takes? Can I stop him a second time?
I might not be as strong as I used to be.
But this time, I’m not fighting to save the world.
I’m fighting for my family.
Sorcerer’s Playground is the first book in the Go Ask Your Mother series. Tom Gregory was once a powerful battlemage. Now, he’s a husband and a father, settled into a cozy suburban life. He hasn’t cast a spell in years. When an old foe returns, looking for revenge, Gregory has no choice but to tap into his arcane power again. This isn’t just a story for dads. Do you have a dad, know a dad, or love a dad? Do you enjoy action-packed magical adventures? If so, you’ll love Go Ask Your Mother!
Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic-informed by religious myths, ancient and modern-that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.
This kindle e-book novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book one of three series.
Tom and Kit and their three kids are having fun at the park when a monster shows up. Tom takes care of the monster with his magic. Tom is a Battle Mage. He has not used his magic for twenty years. Now the Black Magic is back. Tom ends up leading the mage group in the battle. They defeat the Black Magic but he father is lost. His son has inherited some of the magic.
I would recommend this series and authors to readers of romantic family and friends relationship adventure fantasy novels. 2024 🎎😯🏡🤗
Each time I pick up a Theo book I know I'm going to love it. This series has been in my TBR for a while and I've been itching to read it. It starts off in true Theo style, light hearted and easy reading, laying a foundation for what's to come, although, the way the author likes to twisting the story, I'm never sure how it will end up. As always, there is the most unexpected humour, a trait of the author.
Here we have Tom Gregory, a loving husband and father, who just happens to be a powerful mage, a battlemage no less, a battlemage who has a wand called...Wand. yeah, I know... very impressive name. A battlemage who literally saved the world 20 years prior, and now living a quiet suburban life. Yeah, right... The powerful mage, Caedes, was interned in a magical cage, way deep in the earth, courtesy of Tom. But now he's free and not only that, "things" are creeping out from the depths, things that have bad intent. So once more does Tom have to try save the world and a gullible young man in the process, but how? Rekindling his friendship with Jessica, Tom and she look into all the options, one being involving the mage world to unite, to stand together to oust this threat. Easier said than done...
I love these characters, the author's has a real skill in bringing his characters to life, they're so normal... outside of being mages that is. Jess really drew the short straw with her mage powers, my goodness, I would dread being able to hear and feel everyone. But she's adorable, she's so comical and extremely likeable, and best of all is that she's a true friend. Not only to Tom but to his family too, to his wife and rambunctious 3 sons. One of whom BTW is starting to manifest. See? Excitement, excitement, excitement! All in an ingenious story, where the pace is quick and steadily moves forward, where motives are revealed, where evil does as evil will and only a handful can try prevent a disaster. The rest, well, so steeped in bias and fear, they won't even attempt to aid.
The way the author illustrates the fight between good and evil is heartfelt, after all, no one is purely good or evil, anyone could veer to either side depending on the right circumstances and perhaps it's easy, albeit uncomfortable, to acknowledge that. The action, the characters, the ease of storytelling, the twists, the uncovering/unfolding of motives and mystery, all contribute to make this yet another Theo must read!
Regardless, this is got to be one of the most engaging stories Monroe has written to date. And I don’t use this superlative unadvisedly, although I am wont to do so. No, I am absolutely sincere and serious.
The humor that is possible when combining every day family life, including the raising of three small children, all of them boys, which is even worse (and as a boy I know what I’m talking about), with the perils and uncertainty of saving the world from destruction is simply unparalleled, and Monroe milks it for all that it is possibly worth. (I also have to admit, I am quite impressed by that rather convoluted and yet grammatically correct run-on sentence that I just wrote)
Even setting the humor aside, we have Monroe’s excellent storytelling and world building talents to entertain us. Really, what more could you possibly ask for? Well, the answer to that is more, and more, and more, and still more sequels. Start writing Mr. Monroe, and do so quickly, lest the villagers pick up torches and pitchforks and and begin chanting outside your front door at midnight…. To say the least, it would likely annoy your spouse and then you would never hear the end of it
I enjoyed this book a lot and I look forward to reading more of the series. It reminded me a bit of Harry Dresden, but less dark and gritty. This is the first of Theophilus Monroe's writing I have read, but it won't be the last (definitely going to check out his other works). And we (me and my husband) have a LARGE collection of Michael Anderle's writings in our Kindle library, so we always pay attention when we encounter a new creation from him.
I really enjoyed this story. It was a different approach to the usual, with a happy family where parent are very much in love after a decade or so together.
I enjoyed the Dad humour, and the fact this book took an approach to look at parenting, life gets through the eyes of a father who is also a mage.
I definitely recommend this book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Tom is living a normal life with his wife and kids, but 20 years ago he saved everyone from a crazed Mage. Now evil magic is starting to show up again and Tom is going to have to figure out what is going on and protect his family and friends. Good start to a new series and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Twenty years... Twenty years living a normal life... Amazing how quickly it all falls away...
"Things that are dead, should stay dead." - Thomas Gregory
Non stop action and angst! Good vs. Evil... But do your actions outweigh the "good" they do? What's the real cost to your soul... When you destroy to save?
The description and preview were interesting, but the storyline failed to deliver on that promise. I eventually just dropped out as the story became too routine and mediocre for me to sustain any interest.
I enjoyed the book. Interesting characters and story, bouncing between the ordinary and the... extraordinary. Did expect one of the major events. Will have to see what happens next.
This is a fast paced story of a one time hero who peaked at 21. Now married and a father of three he once again has to save the world. Lots of introspection. I just couldn't get into it.
As a dad myself, I (may) partake in the occasional joke… LOL! If I had powers of any kind, I think I would relish the chance to be a hotdog. HEE HEE Honestly though I really enjoyed your characters Thank you Jeff Howell
This is a good book. The story was about the difference of being a dark magic user or a light magic user. How dark magic corrupts the user. A really good and fun read. The book had a few twists to it also.
