Stripes and Spots

Rate this book
Some animals have stripes. Some have spots. And some have both! Explore the difference between spots and stripes as you meet many animals with marvelous markings.

Stripes are long and spots are round, but there’s so much more to them than that! In this adorable Pre-reader, see how a baby okapi follows its mom’s stripes to travel through the forest. Learn how giraffes can tell each other apart by their differently shaped spots. Discover how deer, emu, and tigers use the patterns on their bodies to hide in their environment, and more.

Perfect for kids who are ready to read with an adult, National Geographic Pre-readers include simple, expert-vetted text and large, engaging photos on every page. A vocabulary tree at the beginning of the book introduces kids to key words in concept groups, helping kids make connections between words. Plus, a wrap-up activity gives kids a chance to use what they've learned, while expanding their understanding of the animal world.

New readers will want to read Stripes and Spots over and over again, as they begin to recognize some of the awesome patterns on animals’ skin or fur.

As is standard with National Geographic Kids readers, Stripes and Spots includes beautiful one- and two-page spreads of animals photographed in their natural habitats. Each photograph includes a label that identifies the animal featured.

Stripes and Spots opens with a Vocabulary Tree that includes the main words stripes and spots. The supplementary words long, thick, and thin are under the word stripes while the supplementary words round, big, and small are under the word spots. This pre-reader (as is standard with other National Geographic Kids pre-readers) fails to bold the vocabulary words throughout the text. This simple adjustment could help young readers more readily identify these new words.

While the majority of the photographs clearly support the aligned text, the first photograph of a Monarch butterfly is connected to both stripes and spots which could be confusing for children not yet introduced to this book’s idea that stripes and spots come in different shapes and sizes.

The majority of the text is appropriate for the intended audience, but some sentences extend longer than would be best for pre-readers. Short sentences limited to five or less words keep the text moving while the photographs clearly add context to the new vocabulary words. The end of the book includes the likely unfamiliar word, Okapi which is a fun surprise but may trip up even the adult reader.

4 STARS - RECOMMENDED (PreK-1):
Overall, Stripes and Spots is a beautiful introduction to common patterns and how these patterns appear in nature. Photographs add context to new vocabulary words, but it would have been helpful to bold these words in the text. An effective introduction to patterns that will catch the interest of many early readers.

Many animals have stripes and many have spots. Some stripes are bright and colorful and some warn animals away. Some spots are big and some spots are small. This book introduces pre readers to these facts and more. The text is simple and repetitive. The photos help to tell the facts with ease. Fans of National Geographic, non-fiction, and animals will want to picks this one up. Recommended for most early reader collections.

Stripes and Spots is an addition to the National Geographic Kids collection of animal books. This one is labeled "pre-reader" and has much less print on each page, with more predictable text for those just beginning to read. Each page has one sentence with an illustration that readers can use for context when reading the book. A fun activity at the end asks the reader to draw a real or imaginary animal with stripes and/or spots. This is the first pre-reader book I've seen, I'll definitely keep my eye out for more.
