German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).
Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.
I love stories about good/ bad brothers/ sisters! Especially when the bad ones get their comeuppance in non-violent ways.
However, I remember thinking at the time that money falling from one's mouth, however beneficial economically, is bound to be a damn nuisance. Better than frogs jumping out, however!
عملا تو همه ی داستان ها یک نامادری بدجنس بود که یک دختر زشت داشت و نادختری اش را اذیت می کرد:| ولی قصه پریانند دیگه.آدم انتظار منطق نباید از اینها داشته باشد!
I binged on this series of comic books when I discovered them at about age 8. And now, many decades later, I still remember them, especially the art. A bit of Cinderella here, with kindly dwarfs instead of fairy godmothers. While their intentions are good, having gold coins fall from your mouth whenever you said something would be inconvenient to say the least.
2020 The ending of this version is 'gentle' compared with the original Grimm story.
One of those tales where the stepmother is evil, her step-daughter ugly and people get their just deserts very quickly, magical dwarves in the winter woods endow gifts and curses, and princes ride by on their sleighs by icy lakes where fair maidens rinse their clothes. Charming and characteristically beautifully illustrated nevertheless.
