Legend has it that the rose quartz has the power to bring about true love...
Henrietta Sutton has always kept her expectations about love realistic, scoffing at the notion that a charmed stone could sway her fortunes in romance. But her skepticism is challenged when the dashing Lord Simon Barrington quite unexpectedly falls into her life—quite literally at her feet. Suddenly, Henrietta finds herself entangled with the notorious rogue, agreeing to paint his portrait, a task that brings them dangerously close.
As their time together lengthens, Henrietta can't help but fall for Simon's charms, fearing that her feelings are more fantasy than reality. Can this unexpected love, sparked under such unusual circumstances, truly last, or is it another fanciful illusion? Henrietta must decide whether to trust their connection or protect her heart from potential heartbreak.
Wicked with You was previously published in the Love be a Lady's Charm anthology.
I am an unapologetic romance lover. I read it. I write it. Enough said. Well..I also have a warrior way "Never give up on my dreams." I spend a copious amount of time drooling over Rick Grimes from Walking Dead, watching Japanese anime and playing video games with my love, Dusean.
This novella was quite an enjoyable read. This is part of a series written by four authors, so that's interesting. The series features an unusual premise where four wallflower cousins are guided to their true love by a rose quartz bestowed by their grandmother, who received it from a gypsy. The cousins will take a turn wearing it. Precedence is determined by age (oldest to youngest). Henrietta is the second oldest cousin, and she is a painter. She met Simon on her way to her cottage. Simon is looking for the painter Henry Atwood, Henrietta's pseudonym. He wanted to commission a painting of himself in the buff. He is trying to win a courtesan's hand by gifting her this painting (what conceit!). Of course, they fell in love, being in close proximity every day. They had one night together, and Simon left the next day. Simon decided not to pursue the courtesan as he realised he was in love with Henrietta. They met up at the cottage and got married. Not my best summary, sorry.
This being a novella, the characters aren't as fleshed out as I like them to be. Henrietta's a wallflower and has a sizable dowry, so I'm not sure why she didn't take off. She is described as pretty and has lush curves (I guess that means she's a bit chubby). Simon's your typical rake; he doesn't want to be leg shackled, but there wasn't a sufficient explanation. He's responsible and loves his mother and sister. He's 27, so I don't see the deterrent to being married.
The writing is sublime, though, and the love scenes are good (Ms. Reid rarely disappoints in this regard). It'd be interesting to read how the other authors tackled the cousins' stories.
Stacy Reid never disappoints. Perfect quicky for my short attention span of late. I would have kept reading if this was a full novel, nevertheless, it made for an entertaining and satisfying read. Great chemistry between Henrietta and Simon!
Trope/Setting Highlights ✔ Virgin (FMC) x roguish rake with a reputation™ (MMC) ✔ FMC is painter working under a male pseudonym, MMC commissions “him” ✔ Friends-ish-to-lovers ✔ Squint and it’s there OW, but only as a plot device ✔ HEA Christina’s Corner (tropes I personally hate and like to know if included in book) ✘ Love triangle ✘ Cheating (beyond normal OM/OW ‘drama’) ✘ Dead spouse
Review: I can usually count on Stacy Reid for a solid historical romance, and this short novella delivered! It packed a witty and romantic punch in its short pages. This is definitely one I would’ve loved to see as a full-length novel.
Can’t believe I waited so long to read from one of my very favorite authors. Henry Aka Henrietta is a very talented artist. Simon is a young handsome rake and wants to procure his next mistress and willing to pay an exorbitant fee to impress her and get ahead of other wealthy Lords! He wants a nude portrait but it’s too much for Henry and she is an innocent who has never been kissed! Knowing he is a rake her grandmother tells her to wear the Rose quartz and it’s okay to be a bit naughty with her future spouse! Henry is very naughty but they spend time together getting to know each other and Simon sees clearly what his future can be! Will he have courage to face his want to be mistress let her go for the future he doesn’t know he needs! A short novella packed with nonstop adventure! Bravo!
Short story, very cute. Four wallflowers cousins trying to find true love, guided by a magical rose quartz.
🎨 Henrietta is a painter, and sell her paintings by the pseudonym of Henry Atwood.
🍑 Simon is trying to find Henry Atwood to paint his portrait (naked portrait?!), to gift a very famous and disputed courtesan, and if he’s lucky enough, she will be delighted by his huge siz… charm.
💵 It’s time for Henrietta to get married, so she accepts the very generous offer to paint the portrait, as a way to raise funds and be financial stable for a time.
🖼️ When Simon discover about Henrietta pseudonym, he’s admired by her cleverness and exquisite work. Every day they spend together, they fall a little bit in love.
It was a really good read, and I really liked the couple, so I didn’t wanted to say good bye so fast 🥹
Miss Henrietta Sutton had a less than impressive season, and was happy to retire for the summer months to the Irish coast with her cousin and grandmother. It was where she had run like a hoyden in her youth, and it had a wonderfully quiet place to indulge in her desire to paint… under the pseudonym Henry Atwood.
One day when our for a stroll, Henrietta saw a well dressed man with a spy glass sitting in a tree, then fall out of it. It frightened her that he might be injured, and grateful that he wasn’t Henrietta thought the man stunningly handsome.
Lord Simon Barrington was accustomed to women being dazzled by his good looks and his smile, and was taken aback when the young woman didn’t seem affected by him. He was the Earl of Hardwick and of course women always fell for him, why didn’t she? He needed her help to find the painter, Sir Henry Atwood, and she said she would pass on his messages. However Simon wanted a portrait, which meant Henrietta could no longer stay anonymous. However, he made her an offer for an astronomical amount of money that made it impossible to turn down. The only catch being that he wanted his portrait done partially nude to gift to a famous courtesan.
Henrietta has been wearing a rosé quartz necklace that her grandmother swears has the magic to draw your true love to you. Could her true love be this rakeshell of an Earl? Not only is the Earl attracted to her, he is darn fond of spending time with her. Does the the magic quartz work?
Legend has it that the rose quartz has the power to bring about true love. Miss Henrietta Sutton dared not believe in the silly idea that a charmed stone might, at last, bring her luck in love, lest she led her heart to ruin. That was until one Lord Simon Barrington dropped at her feet. Literally. Soon she is wickedly charmed into spending time with the rogue to paint his portrait! The more time she spends with Simon, Henrietta fears she is falling for him and doubts that this perfect love could ever be real. Henrietta and Simon are a couple that is meant to be together. Henrietta paints as a male painter. Simon wants him to paint a portrait of him in the nude. When he finds out that he is a she he has a secret that they overcome. I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
I don’t think she was the right author for this series.
I was looking forward to the next story in the series about the rose quartz , but I was disappointed. (This is Henrietta’s story.) I know the author solely from reading the book overviews and reviews on Amazon. Based on that information, I did hesitate purchasing the book but I wanted to read all 4 books in the in the series. It was a lot steamier than I expected. When I compare her story to the other it seems a little out of the place. I just don’t buy into Henrietta painting a portrait of half naked man as a present for his mistress. I don’t know if I will read any other books by this author, but if she writes something that peaks my interest, I will the author another shot.
Wicked With You is a historical romance novella, part of the Love be a Lady’s Charm anthology which is written by four authors. Set in Lancashire, England, this is a heady romance.
4+ stars
Four wallflower cousins discover a beautiful charm in the attic, and their Grandmother tells them of its romantic powers. Legend has it that the rose quartz has the power to bring about true love.
Henrietta Sutton has always kept her expectations about love realistic, scoffing at the notion that a charmed stone could sway her fortunes in romance. She is a talented painter and the second eldest of the cousins. Using a pseudonym, Henrietta sells her paintings as Henry Atwood, to save for her own future.
Simon Barrington is a rake. Commissioning a nude portrait for a paramour he is chasing, Simon seeks out the talented Henry Atwood.
I really loved this novella. It was pretty straight forward. It had good character development, and it showed the connection being built between Henrietta and Simon. It was believable, and their love won out in the end. The side characters were enjoyable as well which makes it easy to become vested in their futures too. I just wish I could get more insight into their life after marriage.
A gem of a story (hehe). This short story is packed full of engaging characters and great writing by the wonderful Stacy Reid. Simon and Henrietta are destined to fall for each other and their short journey is such that it makes you sigh along the way. Just too cute. I read this as part of KU.
This was super cute! I liked how much time they spent together, though the novella’s length limited it from being fully fleshed out. I wish it had been longer because I really liked both Simon and Henrietta.
