About the author

Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.

Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.

Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.

Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.

A Moomin alphabet! Beautiful artwork and a letter of the alphabet on every page. It's a gorgeous intro to the world of the Moomins for young children, helping them recognise the alphabet, and a beautiful book for any Moomin fan too. Perfect for a lovely gift :)

I spent at least a minute stroking the cover and staring at the gorgeous colours before I opened it and the same after I'd finished. I'd think a great deal less of anyone who didn't adore this book. Some things are negotiable; the love of Moomins is not.

So, probably you choose this book only if you're already a huge Moomin fan.

As someone who is only peripherally a Moomin fan, I struggled to remember who some of the characters were at the beginning, which meant I wasn't as good at reading the book to M as I should have been. Very cute though.

Cute and fun to read aloud. Loved that each letter had an associated quote from one of the original Moomin books.
