Improve Your Piano Playing
The art of piano playing is not, as many believe, merely a result of one's innate 'musical gift': the only way to improve upon your talent is to practise, and to practise the right way . If you already know the basics, and wish to bring your playing up to a better standard - either for exams, performance, or for personal pleasure - then Improve Your Piano Playing will help you do so. Dr John Meffen shows you how you can dramatically improve your technique. You can erradicate recurring mistakes, and master the art of workable fingering, expressive touch, phrasing, tone production and pedalling. The process of learning a new piece is made simple and accurate with Dr Meffen's tried and tested techniques. Also included is an invaluable chapter on the inner workings of the piano which will help you chose the right piano for your needs and ability.

An essential book for the amateur pianist who wants to improve. This is a book about HOW to practise playing and how to eradicate recurring mistakes. It also teaches one a lot about appreciating the playing of professionals!

An interesting introduction to piano playing. It’s written more for the beginner pianist, than the experienced player, but I would argue that even an advanced pianist can learn something from it. It gives a great introduction in posture, technique and practice skills. I would recommend for any adult learner at the piano.

Good insights to improve your practice style. Perhaps more geared to seasoned players than meer beginners like me

December 28, 2009This is an absolute gem of a little book for anyone who can't figure out why you get stuck on certain passages and can't seem to improve. Among other things, sloppy practicing is a crime of which I am guilty. Especially intriguing, the idea that if you play something wrong the very first time through, you have already programmed your neural pathways to some extent and will have to go through a process of unlearning to play it incorrectly. I highly recommend this to both beginners and experiences players.
