Tales of the Gemstone Kingdoms #3

The Bard and the Fairy Prince

Rate this book
When Prince Nemirac learns of his heritage, he vows to become the most powerful demon in history. But he can’t do it alone.

Feeling betrayed by his parents’ lies about his true lineage, Nemirac embarks on a quest to visit all five Gemstone Kingdoms and drain the stones of their power to ascend as a new being. But until he obtains that magic, he’s vulnerable.

Enter Janskoller the warrior bard.

Janskoller has just returned to the Gemstone Kingdoms, drawn by stories of broken curses and lands open for travel. He doesn’t expect a pretty young mage to hire him as a bodyguard, but it’s a good gig for a bard—lots of adventure to fuel his stories, and plenty of travel to spread his fame. Besides, Nemirac’s passion and obvious secrets intrigue him. But soon Janskoller realizes the peril of Nemirac’s goal—an end that puts the five kingdoms at risk and corrupts Nemirac into a darker, twisted version of the man Janskoller has come to care about. As the two grow closer, can Janskoller convince Nemirac to abandon his pursuit of power in favor of the deeper, more lasting magic of love?

I'm having a hard time rating this one and so far have settled on 3.5 stars . It sort of dragged at bit for me which is unlike how I felt about the first books in the series. I really disliked Nem for a lot of the book. He was a right jerk to Janskoller most of the story, while Jan was just so friendly and likeable. Truly, Jan stole the show with his charming ways and silly bard tales. I don't blame Nem one bit for falling for him.

The premise was basically a fairy prince having a hissy fit that his parents didn't tell him about his true lineage. Nevermind the fact that it was only for his own protection. Their hearts were in the right place. It was also obvious how much Nems father loved him from all Nem's childhood memories we are told so I found it frustrating that Nem would turn around and want to punish him. Again, spoiled prince having a hissy fit.

We are shown a tease of the next book in the series and it certainly isn't someone I expected at first. I think a lot of things are going to be quite interesting once word spreads about this particular MC. I'm hoping for a heartfelt reunion of friends, but I guess we shall see.

4.25 stars. I love this series Tales of the Gemstone Kingdoms, it’s full of magic and magical creatures and the plot is original.

Janskoller is a mellow, big, muscled bard, he enjoys life and brings pleasure to people with his songs and lute. He meets Nemirac who offers him a job, as a sellsword, his bodyguard, travel with him on his journey to the different Gemstone Kingdoms.

Nemirac is the Diamond Prince, he got a sharp mouth and is quickly offended. He’s been lied to his whole life and wants to take the reins of his life. He’ll get the Gemstones and become the most powerful creature of the Kingdoms. Janskoller can help him to fulfill his ultimate dream.
He’ll never need anybody no more and can live by himself… maybe Janskoller may join him.

To get the first Gemstone was easy peasy. The hunt for the next was a bit more struggle, the next was shattering, and now… the Ruby of the mountains. Watch Nemirac!

While Janskoller was determined to help Nemirac, he gets more and more doubts, even regrets.
Power is the only thing Nemirac desires, what about him?
Janskoller is kindhearted, Nemirac the opposite, as it seems.

Most of the time Nemirac wasn’t a nice guy, I even wondered what Janskoller saw in him.
Janskoller’s plan is to stop Nemirac just in time, if not, something disastrous will happen!

A story full of amazing creatures and stunning magic, with lighting and smoke, whirlwinds, elements working their power, there are humans, elves, and half-elves, Kings, Demons, dwarves.
All excitingly written, it started with an easygoing pace but accelerated the further the journey came. What I missed were some more romantic moments. It was a hugely entertaining fantasy story, nearing the end it got quite epic.

CW’s and CN’s at the end.

The third in Amanda Meuwissen’s *Tales of the Gemstone Kingdoms* is yet another delightful instalment in this fairy tale series that follows Nemirac and Janskoller, the titular Bard and Fairy Prince, on a quest to find and seize all the Gemstones from each Kingdom.

There were many aspects to this novel that instantly drew me in. The first was the distinctly contrasting personalities of our main characters. Janskoller is gregarious and optimistic, full of tales and songs from all his travels and very much game for any adventure including being hired as a bodyguard by a moody, yet beautiful mage who is hell-bent on finding all the Gemstones. Nemirac, on the other hand, is a classic introvert, suspicious and delightfully emo as he rages against the secrets that were kept from him his entire life. This combination made for such fantastic interactions between the two characters with sizzling banter and poor flustered Nemirac who is constantly disarmed by Janskoller’s easy flirting and bold demeanour.

Secondly, I loved how the reader is immediately aware of the flaws in Nemirac’s plan. Driven by some amount of righteous indignation and a healthy dose of anger towards his parents, the prince’s plan to acquire all the power of the Gemstones and damn the consequences feels hubristic from the start and it was interesting to see a main character’s main obstacle be themselves. Much of the novel is focused on a degree of self-discovery and this aspect is blended so well with the typical elements of a quest plot. I loved how much Nemirac’s personal journey is intertwined with his growing feelings for Janskoller and this novel balances their similarities and differences with such skill. Their love story is not without its setbacks but their chemistry is off the charts and, in the end, they fit together so perfectly.

With some fabulous cameos by past characters, several deeply entertaining songs by our resident bard, and as always, an intricately built fantasy world, *The Bard and the Fairy Prince* is such a great read from start to finish! 5 big stars!

CW’s: some violence and murder (nothing graphically described)

CN’s: This book is a fantasy novel inspired by various fairy-tale elements. Some of the main characters make questionable choices throughout the novel but are redeemed and have a fully fledged arc. This is a low- to mid-heat book with a handful of on-page sex scenes and lots of delicious UST and chemistry. While this book could be read by itself, it would be more enjoyable if read in order as it references past events and includes past characters.

“I hardly think you consider dallying with men sinful,” Nemirac commented.
“Well, no,” Janskoller said, and then leaned toward Nemirac with his usual playful whisper, “but the way I do it can be.” There came the twitch at Nemirac’s lips that Janskoller had feared he’d never cajole again.

So far I can say that this is my favorite installment of this series. I loved how fast-paced it felt. Which can be a little bit tricky for me in stories like this that revolve around a quest. It’s really easy for me to get bored with them, but I really liked how it was managed here.
Also, seeing again most of the characters of previous books at the royal wedding, the first of many I hope, was another plus. Again, the fairy-tale style is strong here but without feeling exaggerated.

description

From the first chapter I knew that Janskoller was going to be my favorite character, and not only of this installment but maybe of the entire series. The patience of that man with all of Nemirac’s whims while still remaining comprehensive and funny. He was the only one who could manage Nemirac’s stubbornness and some mistakes aside he did it perfectly. There were some moments that I wanted to scream at Nemirac but little by little I learned to like him with his stubbornness and all. He made it interesting because he kinda acted like a villain but at the same time he was a normal MC.

New kingdoms to discover and new adventures to follow. A true Grumpy/sunshine story. I’m curious about the turn the next book is going to take.

The Bard and the Fairy Prince is the third story in the Tales of the Gemstone Kingdoms. It is a fantastic fantasy with paranormal elements. Prince Nemirac is kind of prickly where Janskoller the bard seemed carefree. Nemirac is a on a mission to be the most powerful demon. He hires Janskoller to be his bodyguard. They begin an adventure filled with magic, elves, demons, and may more. I seriously loved the banter in this story! Their relationship was fun to read. Janskoller was an amazing character to read, seriously loved him. Nemirac was kind of cold and on a mission, it took me a bit to warm up to him. Sometimes I wondered why Janskoller was attracted to him. But I grew to love them both! Overall, a fantastic read, well written with nice pacing!

I love a good bodyguard romance, but this story has so much more! Prince Nemirac wants his magic, and he needs Janskoller for his journey! So begins a fantasy world bodyguard adventure! I absolutely love their names by the way. Jans is very social and likable from all of his adventures as a warrior, so he of course wants the positive attentions of Nem! Nem is a hard shell to crack as he is on a mission. These two get more then they bargain for when the magics Nems seeks turn out to be dark. Nems has decisions about love and life to make! Loved the Kingdom world building, mystery and magic wrapped up in this romantic adventure!

To say I was excited about this book is not saying anything. The world that Amanda Meuwissen creates in the Gemstones series is unique, with some of the familiar elements of worldbuilding and a fair amount of monstrosity, naughtiness, and gore. It's like retelling well-known tales, but they aren't that familiar either.

This book, however, made me disappointed. And let's be clear from the beginning: it's definitely not a standalone story.

🌙 While the worldbuilding and slow pace were something inherently engraved in the series, in this book we mostly jump from one place to another, from one scene to another, running towards the goal without any second thoughts. The magnificent kingdoms didn't get their opportunity to shine, because the MCs had to jump to another land too fast. The array of familiar characters from previous books was too large to give them space to feel properly placed. Everything and everyone added here and there, mixed but without room to breathe.
🌙 While the premise of two characters who slowly turn into villains is alluring, it never delivers. The character arc made me think more of Loki (from Avengers) or Elsa (from Frozen), but both were much more interesting than Namirac. His goal, while ambitious, seemed more like a sudden whim or teenager than a properly carved plan of a misunderstood villain. And while maybe that was the idea, it didn't make me invested in his history. He wasn't really mysterious or intelligent, and frankly - he was just lucky.
Janskoller's motivations were even less intelligible, especially in the beginning. I was hoping for a proper pay-off, an explanation of why he decided to go through the whole mission, putting boundaries only regarding one point.
🌙 The first half of the book almost made me put it down and never finish. The whole plan to retrieve the power was frankly utterly unconvincing. The snippets of reasons behind Nam's decision made it even less believable. The pure luck of finding Important Clues lost his appeal around the middle of the wedding, and it was downhill from there.
🌙 The second part of the book was better read, mostly because the MCs couldn't back off and pure power and desperation were what drove them forward. This was an embodiment of "Hurry up, Before We All Come to Our Senses" (King Julien from Madagascar 2). It was like looking at a car crash, couldn't stop it, and couldn't stop watching either. Pure madness and fascination. I even started liking our heroes - but they never got proper motivation or satisfactory character arcs.
🌙 While the theme of this story (or the whole series) is worth exploring, and treated in an unusual way, it felt too rushed to actually matter. I didn't like the characters, didn't buy their romance (which happens really fast, let me tell you), and the ending felt pretty anticlimactic. The more Extremely Powerful characters we have, the less their magic and solutions make an impact on me. But if you are searching for an almost-instant-love, a lot of magic, wild sexy scenes, and a ton of bard's stories and songs, this will be a perfect read. Less impactful than previous books, but if read just after them, should provide a good time and an engaging story.

I received an ARC of this book from the Gay Romance Reviews, and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review.

Prince Nemirac learns his life has been filled with lies, when he finds out he is a demon. He decides to visit each of the Gemstone Kingdoms and drain the gemstones of their power, allowing him to become a new being. Until he has accomplished his goal, he is vulnerable and needs protection. He hires the bard Janskollar. Janskollar figures it would be a good way to make money and takes the job of a bodyguard. As they travel together, Janskollar finds himself attracted to Nemirac. He also realizes that Nemirac’s goal may leave him twisted and he wants him to opt for love instead.

Nemirac was really hard to like in the beginning. He did redeem himself in the end though with the help of many people. Janskollar was an outgoing individual and would break into song at any opportunity, quite a contrast to Nemirac’s surliness. The quest to get the gems took its toll on Nemirac with each gem becoming more difficult to absorb. So much is going on with a wedding and curses coming undone. The ending is amazing with the probability of a fourth novel in this series. We can all look forward to this coming soon.

This book starts out with a fairly typical fantasy theme of the dissatisfied young man who leaves home because his parents don’t let him do what he wants. The thing that changes it is Amanda Meuwissen having Prince Nemirac meeting JANSKOLLER the bard. I gave his name all capitals because he is just THAT big a character. The world building of the Gemstone Kingdoms is amazing. I can still remember reading The Prince and The Ice King and being totally blown away. This world building continues in this book and it’s like there were whole new levels to the place that have been unlocked by Prince Nemirac’s actions.
It’s difficult to talk about some of the great things in this book without giving things away. I will say that Ms. Meuwissen is one of my favorite mm fantasy writers for a reason. I read her books in awe of what comes down from her brain to her fingers and then to us. I really didn’t like Prince Nemirac in the beginning but that’s how he is written, as a young spoiled brat who thinks only of himself (don’t worry he gets nicer). I dare you though to read this book and not want a JANSKOLLER for yourself. He is the typical fantasy bard but the best one there ever was. I must give kudos to Ms. Meuwissen for the songs that appear in the book that illustrate why he is the best bard around. You might blithely think that if someone can write good stories that it wouldn’t be hard for them to write song lyrics. Right? Well based on most of the books that I’ve read with songs in them the answer would be a resounding no. JANSKOLLER on the other hand is given marvelous words to sing, to the point that even without music I was singing them in my head as I read the book.
This is a terrific addition to this series that is best read in order.
I will stop gushing now but if anyone (Please) wants to put the songs out as an album I’m up for it.

Amanda found the perfect balance between the slower-paced romance and fast-paced adventure plot in "The Bard and The Fairy Prince". I loved how Nemirac and Janskoller grew closer, slowly but surely. I've always been a sucker for slow burn, so this one was right up my alley.
Janskoller was my favorite character this time around. His role as a bard and the tales/songs he performed, added a lot to of charm to his character and helped flesh out the world in a way that seems effortless, but surely must've been hell to write out, so kudos on that note for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed them all, as usual.
I struggled with liking Nemirac initially because he was so flawed and human, but it only added to make him more lovable in the end. Everything to do with all the gemstone kingdoms and their differences was also quite nice. It thrilled me to see all the previous characters interacting in this book. It felt very nostalgic in the best kind of way. The wedding ceremony and customs were also a treat to learn about; I smiled the whole time. It might've been one of my favorite scenes I read from the entire series so far. Voidy was also a pleasant surprise, and the end to his plotline was also very satisfying. Sufficed to say, I can't wait for the next installment whenever it eventually comes out. I will reread this series again for sure.

Book 3 in the high fantasy Gemstone Kingdom series didn't disappoint, but it also didn't work as well for me as the first 2 books.

I liked Janskoller well enough, and I applauded him for his seemingly never-ending patience for the oh so high-strung, prickly and immature Princeling Nemirac, though how he feel in love with the guy I don't know. I struggled to find any redeeming qualities in Nemirac for quite a while in this book, even though at the end there he finally gets it together.

Janskoller comes across as carefree, just happy to break into song whenever appropriate (or even when not), though in his case, he cares more than he outwardly lets on.

This book is needed to further the overarching storyline of this series, and while it wasn't my favorite, I did enjoy it.

Also - JANSKOLLER! (IYKYK)

Oh man I love this series. I’m not going to give any spoilers or reword the blurb but I do have to praise a few things. First off this world is amazing. So imaginative and complex. You can tell the author put a lot of thought in tying things in. Secondly, be prepared to have your emotions be all over the place, ( and yes that includes wanting shake or smack someone lol.) I get deep in my reads so while I’m there the characters are people to me. This means I think of the whys of the things they do, especially when it’s something I don’t like. I loved seeing some of the previous characters. Really keeps me connected to the world. I knew when I saw this on GRR I had to cross my fingers (and toes) that my request was accepted. I couldn’t wait to dive in. Thankfully I got an arc and happily began reading. I guess you could read this alone but you’d miss a lot. It’s best to read them in order. You will love getting lost in the kingdoms.

I really enjoyed this third book in the series nemirac was very grumpy 90 percent of the time which I found funny because jan is mostly the opposite I enjoyed watching nemirac slowly warm up to jan throughout the story and found the plot of stealing gemstones for power to prove himself was very interesting and there were some funny moments heartfelt moments and some nostalgic ones for the previous kingdoms having jack and reardons wedding within and Levi and ashmedai play a part as well and I can’t wait for the next book

So good! It is not easy to give a new story a classic feel, but this whole series strikes that tone so well! I felt like I was reading a lost Grimm’s fairy tale! Nemirac is such a grumpy little puppy and Janskoller just laughs and barges right through his (silly) boundaries lol I was expecting that the parents would be the ones to stop him but it was so (bloodily) romantic how it happened! Perfectly done, recommended!

A well written, creative, and complex fairy tale!! I’m very much loving the 𝘎𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘮𝘴 series. There is always so much emotion written into each individual story and always an underlying lesson on something {ie; societal norms, family, loyalty, politics}.
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘥 is a slow burn bodyguard/royalty, age gap, paranormal fantasy, kinda hurt/comfort, love story that you can definitely take your time and read and enjoy over days and days.

The Fairy Prince Nemirac(Nem) is on a quest to drain the magic from each of the five gems of the Gemstone Kingdoms. Janskoller (Jan) is a warrior bard hired by Nem to be his muscle on his quest for power.
This story caught my attention from the very beginning. Nem is not a very likeable character when you first meet him, but he grows and changes as the story develops. Jan is carefree and not one for commitment until he encounters Nem. Both men have a lot of growth in the book. Nem is fueled by rage and desire to be the most powerful being in all the kingdoms. It is Jan who tempers Nem’s baser impulses, and in the end saves his soul.
The world building in the series is excellent and I was completely drawn in. I would definitely recommend this book.

Janskoller is a famous bard known in many lands when he is hired by Nemirac as his bodyguard for a quest. Nemirac instructs Janskoller to ask no questions and do as he's told. He expects their interactions to be cold and professional. Unfortunately for Nemirac, Janskoller is not a cold man. The quest quickly becomes apparent and Janskoller gives Nemirac his devotion. However, as the quest becomes closer to completion, Janskoller realizes his feelings are far from professional and the quest is not good for Nemirac. Janskoller must then try to help Nemirac see a better way. I enjoyed this book and truly liked Janskoller. Nemirac is a jerk through much of the book and harder to like. He has his reasons but they don't justify his behavior. Thankfully, Janskoller is there to show him a better path. This is a good addition to the series.

Book #3 of the Gemstone Kingdoms series by Amanda Kay Meuwissen.

I really enjoyed the “Beauty and the Beast” retelling that was the first book of this series (The Prince and the Ice King), and the “nightmare before Christmas” based second book, Stitches. This book followed in a similar vein as those, with lots of action, steam, and flawed but lovable characters.

Janskoller the bard was the clear standout of this book. He was so dashing and dreamy, and pure of heart. Poor Prince Nemirac clearly had a LOT of issues to work through, and he’s fortunate he had Janskoller there along the way as he deep-dove into those issues. I was not a big fan of Nemirac, and often wondered why Janskoller even bothered with him, but by the end of the story I was rooting for them and their HEA.

I appreciated the breadth of the fantasy world-building, the magic system, and the side characters. I enjoyed seeing glimpses of the past MCs from the other books in the series!

I enjoyed the banter and the evolving relationship between these two unlikely heroes (/villains?) and would have welcomed even more romantic moments.

If you love fantasy romance, check this series out, and join the Bard & the Fairy Prince on their epic adventure through the gemstone kingdoms!

This is the story of Nemirac and Janskoller. It is the 3rd book in the Tales from the Gemstone Kingdom. Please read the trigger warnings. This is a wonderfully written story with amazing characters. You are taken on an incredible adventure by the author that grabs you from page 1 to the last. Great story. Definitely recommended.

He has just learnt who he really is and so he intends to be the most powerful demon but for that he needs all five gems. Until he gets them all he is in danger so he gets himself a bodyguard. Can they get all five gems? What power will it give him? Will he get a romantic connection to his bodyguard? See just how it will all go

A fantastic addition to the Tales of Gemstone Kingdom.

Jan was funny and I really enjoyed his lively songs. He hid so much behind his smiles and songs.

Nem lost himself along the way but it took a clever bard to bring him back.

I really enjoyed this one and would highly recommend it.

An epic tale from Amanda Meuwissen!
Janskoller the bard has traveled all across the gemstone kingdoms sharing his songs, and perhaps himself at night. He’s charming, funny, handsome and talented. Everyone who meets him loves him and loves to be around him.
Except for the beautiful half-elf, who Janskoller is instantly attracted to. But Nemirac doesn’t want to take Janskoller to his bed, he wants to take him on a quest.
Nemirac is the son of the Fairy Queen, but was born without his own magic. Without his staff, Nem is completely without magic. He’s determined to change that, after he discovers his parents have been keeping secrets from him.
With Jan’s protection as his bodyguard, Nem sets off on a journey to capture the power of the gemstones in every kingdom. He’s determined to claim his own magic, but at what cost?
As Jan melts Nem’s icy exterior and they start to develop feelings for each other, Nem must decide what is more important, becoming more and more powerful or claiming Jan’s heart.
A magical tale of a bard and a prince on a quest; a magical adventure filled with mystical creatures, kingdoms and curses.

Cover: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars

💭 My Thoughts:
✨📖👉 This book explores what it means to choose love over power, to believe you are more than your past, and to find healing in connection.

💘 Janskoller is an absolute vibe... cheeky, soulful, and impossible not to adore.
❤️‍🩹 Watching Nemirac wrestle with his darker nature while slowly letting someone in? Chef’s kiss. 🤌
👌 It’s beautiful to watch a character like this evolve, to see someone who once felt lost or broken begin to find purpose, love, and a reason to change.

🥵 The steamy scenes are off the charts, with high heat!
🔥💣 The chemistry between them is explosive… full of passion and emotional tension.

📖 The pacing is perfect, rich world-building, the story moving, and the ending... so beautiful!!!

▪︎FAV QUOTE▪︎

Nemirac:
■ “Are you for hire?” Nemirac asked.
“Forward, aren’t you?” The man’s deep, boisterous voice made Nemirac’s stomach grow hot. “That’s far too fair a face to be hiding in a hood. I wouldn’t be opposed to being paid, pretty thing, but I’d take you to bed for free.”
“I-I meant as a sellsword!” Nemirac barked, feeling his cheeks grow as hot as his gut. 🤭

💯 Can't wait for the next book in the Series

DNF - PG 112

Why?

Because the romance is so incredibly awful. Oh my gosh. It's horrid. (The romance isn't why I kept reading the two previous books, (awesome found family and curious mystery) but at least the first wasn't awful and I liked the second.)

But let's back up a moment. The book starts off with Janskoller's (the bard) introduction. And it took me forever to get into the book. I thought it was my fault. (Later I discovered that my first impressions of Janskoller was telling me to run fast and far, though at the time I didn't know why.) But then Nemirac (the 'fairy prince') is introduced and things flowed smoothly. For about ten pages.

So, Nemirac isn't a bad character, exactly (Janskoller is but more on him later, because it's impossible to talk about why he is so awful without talking about Nemirac) but he is a very poor choice for a love interest in a story. (I'm predisposed to like suspicious magic users with a rather skewed moral compass. Seen first, I think, in Raistlin Majere, but most lastingly in Anders from Dragon Age II.)

Nemirac is twenty-two years old - something that is mentioned quite firmly in the book as him being 'of age' - but, if I would have had to guess his age from his actions, I would have said he was much younger. Maybe fifteen. Definitely a teenager because he has the brattiness and attitude of a teenager down perfectly. (Even his reasoning (that I know, anyway) for what he's doing is a teenager's reasoning.)

Now we have Janskoller. Jaskoller is, self admitted, about a decade older than Nemirac. So...early thirties. But, it must also be considered that there are some strong hints in what I read that Janskoller is, in fact, immortal/unaging/cursed. And is significantly older. Like several hundred years older.

I don't actually like large age gaps in my romances. It's not a thing for me usually, because it often sends the equality of the romance out of balance. The huge age gap in the first two books of this series didn't bother me because it didn't feel like there was that much of an age difference. (Due to personality and actual life experiences, I guess.) In this book, the age difference - because of Nemirac's attitude, partially - seems huge.

This is compounded by Janskoller being a creepy, creepy lecher. He feels, honestly, rather predatory. Early on in the book, Janskoller thinks that Nemirac is 'asking him to kiss him with his eyes'. (First of all, ugh.) So Janskoller tries to kiss Nemirac only to be soundly rebuffed. Nemirac tells him no, very, very explicitly.

Janskoller proceeds to A) keep flirting with him in lewd ways, B) have sex with another man in their shared room, C) invites Nemirac to sit on his lap after Janskoller and the other man have sex, while Janskoller is sitting naked on Nemirac's bed and D) admits that 'usually no is enough but that he likes Nemirac's responses too much to leave him alone'.

What pisses me off almost as much as all of this combined, is that Janskoller is the first explicitly bi lead in this series and ... and he is the biggest slut in the series. Almost exactly halfway through the book and he has slept with three people - none of which is his love interest. (I easily forgave the first two, because it was early on, but the third one was almost like he was having sex with this other guy just to get a rise out of Nemirac.)

So, while I am curious about Voidy, I cannot finish this book because every time I pick it up I am reminded of how horrid Janskoller is. Yick.

Story ♥️♥️♥️
Characters ❤️❤️❤️
Overall ♥️♥️♥️💕

Amanda Meuwissen is a new author to me,and her writing style sounds more mythical, literally like prose-like style, as you will find when you will read the songs sung by our bard. The world building is unique and if you have not read the previous books, a bit confusing (as it was for me🙂), but not boring confusing, just a tad too poetic😋.

It's a slow burn romance between a very unlikely pair of a fairy prince Nemirac and a bard Janskoller. The prince hires the bard for protection, the bard is attracted to the pretty face, but he was also getting paid in gemstones. Did I mention that the world building is about built around gemstone kingdoms and this time around it's fairy prince from Diamond Kingdom.

I found Nemirac or Nem to be a prince with super prickly personality and an attitude of a noble to boot, accept in moments where he let his guard down and smiled or quipped with snark at Janskollers jokes or teasing. It was these conversations between the two leads that are really enjoyable. And then there is the singing and snark that Jan gets out of a miffed Nem. I also adored the scenes with their gemstone protector demon Voidy/ Cullen(with a noble history and an intriguing past). There are plenty of other characters to keep a track of, which is confusing if you haven't read the previous books, something i am gonna rectify.

Its still an enjoyable read, with a brilliant though process given to the world building and presence of unique characters.

I love a story that features the "villain" as the main character. Nemirac has always felt different and wants to gather power and magic to prove to others that he can be the best. That he's worth something. I really felt for his feelings of low self worth and being not enough. He hires Janskoller as protection. Janskoller is a bard who can take care of himself in a fight but carries a bright and sunny personality that hides some inner truths. This was a spell binding tale of two men on a journey not looking to catch feelings and how powerful love truly is. I thought the grumpy/sunshine trope well done. Janskoller, while being bawdy and optimistic, isn't naively so and understands Nemirac's boundaries while still toeing the line. Nemirac wants both to keep everyone at arms length and find someone who would stand by his side. It was cute when he gave in to some of Jans' jests and let a small smirk slip out. While I love these two and how solidly their relationship was built, what really kept me in was Nemirac's internal battle. His emotions totally hit me right in the heart and I definitely got misty eyed a few times. I thought his character development was cleverly done.

This one should be read after the previous in this story as it builds on previous events. We get to see quite a few familiar faces, which is always a nice bonus, plus the set up for the next in the series. I greatly enjoy Amanda's story telling and can't wait to see what's in store for our next couple. If you're a fan of fairy tales, then you definitely need to check out this series. I think this one definitely rivaled Stitches for my favorite

This is book 3 of a series, and although it probably can be read as a stand alone, it’s more enjoyable if you have all the background information.
The story follows bard Janskoller, who is hired for protection by the mysterious Nemirac. In the beginning the reader is kept guessing who Nemirac is and what his reasons are for wanting all the gemstones.
First things first, the writing is befitting of the story. It’s not always common/contemporary language, which took a while to get used to, but was truly perfect for this universe and very well written. Second, the world building is amazing. There are elves, dwarfs, demons, magic and everything you can wish for. Those were the things I liked.
But… and sadly, this is big but for me, I didn’t connect with the MCs. And what’s worse, I didn’t like Nemirac at all. I don’t mind villains as main characters. In fact I love morally gray bad guys finding love. But Nemirac was a person I couldn’t understand, couldn’t feel sympathy with and therefor just didn’t care for him. His reasons for his actions felt pig headed, disproportionate and unjustified to me. Which is totally on me and not the book. Janskoller was refreshing and fun, but also deeper than the first look suggests. But I just couldn’t understand what he saw in Nemirac and that’s way I wasn’t invested in them as a couple.
But me not liking the MCs aside, it’s a good story about pursuing your dreams. About belonging, finding your path and your true self.

Absolutely enjoyed this grumpy/sunshine duo in the latest addition to The Gemstone Kingdoms series. I think it is helpful to read the stories before because characters from prior books are seen again in this book, however, the world building and character development is so well done that it can be a standalone without feeling completely lost. It has fantasy elements but it’s not your typical high fantasy novel that builds slowly with too much world building.

We meet Janskoller and Nemirac who seem so oddly mismatched. Janskoller is the friendly, charismatic, burly bard who seems to attract attention in every kingdom he travels to and his songs are well known. Nemirac is the cranky Fairy Prince who contracts Janskoller as sword for hire while he completes his undisclosed mission. As Janskoller continues his journey with him, he realizes the errors of this plan for both Nemirac and the kingdoms.

I truly enjoyed the dynamic between the two MCs. Janskoller humanizes and makes Nem’s character likable. We see the reluctant smiles at his jokes and behavior and a glimpse of how Jan sees him, flaws and all. He’s troubled and his plan is likely to cause chaos but can Janskoller convince him to give up this plan? Janskoller’s character is so easy going and fun to read but he has his own set of secrets that threaten their relationship.

It’s a fun series to read and I’m looking forward to Cullen’s story and where the series goes from here!
