“Love is too beautiful to be hidden in the closet.”

Once upon a time, there was a little kid who consistently had their face glued to the pages of a book. With a little faith, trust, and a whole hell of a lot of determination, that little kid went from the person reading books, to the person writing them. And thus, Rae Simmons was born.
With the publication of their debut Hunt You Down in the spring of 2022, this Atlanta native set off on a mission to highlight the hard-hitting issues facing the queer community.
When they’re not writing, Rae can be found curled up on the couch with one of their three dogs with their knitting in hand, watching Grey’s Anatomy for the millionth time—much to their partner’s dismay.

I’m a little conflicted. The story and plot and characters were all fine. But it really kept feeling like the stereotypical hurt/comfort storyline in a het romance, as in the woman of the story is struggling with something and the man comes in and saves the day… There were multiple times that made me feel like that. What I’m trying to say is that it felt like I was reading a het romance with the female character simply changed to a male. And don’t let me forget about the complete lack of prep in literally all of the sex scenes… I don’t think I’m wording this very well, it’s 1AM while I’m writing this so I’m definitely not making sense. It was good overall, I’m not upset by it. But for a gay romance? I dunno.

To start, this is a d/s type book and I would’ve liked the author to put that literally anywhere so I could’ve decided not to read it as that’s not usually a genre I enjoy. It’s not in the description or in the “content warning” at the beginning of the book either. It also seems to be a pretty common theme mm writers do with their stories of abuse, they have their mc who is a victim of domestic violence go on to participate in a dom/sub relationship. While I’m sure it happens it just seems so unrealistic that a month after getting out of a brutal, dangerous relationship David would immediately participate in a d/s situation.

How David and Andre meet and their first encounter is hard to believe. Their initial meeting and Andre’s immediate control barely upsets David, even though once again he’s a month out of an extremely bad relationship. It doesn’t add that he’d be so willing to follow and be so physical with a complete stranger.

As another reviewer mentioned, this book is all tell and very little show. Just page after page of telling you what happened, but not being present for the moment.

A couple other things; David speaks of Andre being able to feel his skull fractures, feel a past broken rib and his fractured arm, it’s possible he felt his skull fractures if they were bad enough to break skin but you can’t feel a broken rib outside of someone’s body, maybe a scar on the arm but it just isn’t reality. Also I don’t mean to be a jerk but the ex boyfriend had only proved to be dangerous to David, I don’t think “all available cops” would be searching for him when he skipped check in for jail. And David’s job threatening to fire him while he was being stalked by an ex and had legal proof would probably be a lawsuit waiting to happen. The sex is also written like very vaguely, there’s very little prep and a lack of description about anything, odd when there’s so much telling elsewhere and none here.

One big issue I had that continued throughout was Andre getting David drunk a lot. In New Orleans, on their first date by the river, David drinks 2/3 of a bottle of scotch by himself, at the work event Andre takes him to, he’s like almost constantly drunk.

This is just not for me, it needs too much suspended belief for me to go on.

Wow!

Hunt You Down is a great debut novel. It will have you on the edge of your seat from the get-go and you just want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next.

When David meets Andre, he is just starting to pick up the pieces after getting out of an abusive relationship and the way their relationship develops is so incredibly sweet and yet deliciously spicy.

I love how protective David’s younger brother, Dylan, is - it is such an amazing relationship that fills you with all the feels.

This story has it all - romance, relationships that you can’t help to root for, mystery and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and an emotional ending.

An engaging read from start to finish!

A passionate page-turner

Wow! I can’t believe this book is the author’s debut novel, it’s really well-written and the pacing kept me turning the pages. This story is intense in both passion and drama from the very first page! The relationship of David and André is similarly sweet and spicy. I was cheering for them throughout, but especially as the book reaches its climax. (Also I fell in love with Dylan—more of him, please!)

For fans of steamy m/m romance who aren’t shy about violence and emotional journeys, I recommend giving this new author a chance!

DNF. 39% in and I can’t anymore. Not sure what book the others have been reading. This book demonstrates very well the opposite of ‘show don’t tell’. Man there is a lot of telling.

Początek tej książki był świetny, ale ja jak to ja, poleciałam na koniec , żeby sprawdzić co się stanie i sorry, ale dręczenie głównego bohatera, szczególnie po tym co przeszedł to już jak dla mnie za dużo.

4.5* overall

This book is full of hurt/comfort, and just about an abuse victim learning to trust and love for the first time. I really enjoyed all the hurt/comfort, and all the issues David had and had to overcome. I think that part was amazing - I am just a sucker for characters that go through hell and show all the parts of trauma and PTSD and just heal, not completely, but at least some.

The abuse is on page! Be ware. It is mostly physical. There is SA but not described, only implied.

I am not giving this book full 5 stars only because of two things: some of the character decisions (I'm talking about you David and your goddamn phone!) and how André was really OTT for the majority of the book. I loved him more when he was a bit imperfect because of his jealousy. Otherwise, he felt a bit flat as a character. The fact that he is a millionaire living in a penthouse, and his neighbour works night shifts at a bar? What was her salary? That really took me out of the illusion. And then the one scene where she shows up in the middle of the night? I mean, David had all the right to be scared or see it as weird. I would expect André to let David know that there is a stranger in their house. But that is about it. I enjoyed the focus on characters and them finding their way towards each other. And I was soooo happy that there is no third act break up.

The sex was really hot. I love that we got some vanilla sex, and then some with a D/s dynamic (which I adore). And it is definitely balanced with couple of fade to black instances.

Definitely recommend the book mainly for its hurt/comfort trope.

So this was a very moving and heart breaking story of David who has just barely made it out alive of an abusive relationship that went on for years. He is finally starting to heal when he meets Andre in Mardis Gras. The only have one night but it's everything and leaves a lasting impression on both men and they keep in touch.

Although their friendship is new, Andre is just what David needs after everything he has gone through and survived. When things get tough, Andre is there every step of the way to give David everything a loving relationship should have.

There are some scenes that are difficult to read involving David's abusive ex Regan. The secondary characters are great and I would recommend this new author.

Please make sure you are aware of the triggers before you read this one, as it mentions an abusive relationship and there is sexual & physical abuse on the pages. However, if you can handle this, it is an excellent book because of the main MC's. Andre was an absolute darling, though in the early scenes you worry he might not be. David is a victim who is trying his best, and this representation is so real life. I knew it had to have a HEA because otherwise I would not have read it (I made that mistake once!) but at times I had to put it down. Dylan, David's brother, is another good man, and I am so glad David had him. Rough but worth it, though I would have liked Regan to have received what he really deserved.

Wow, just wow! This novel was amazing. The emotional roller coaster I went through, (for all the right reasons, of course) was truly an eye opener. As someone who has seen a family member suffer through what David went through, truly put me in that persons place. And then Andre comes in and gives him this strength! I truly can’t give a complete review without actually saying the ENTIRE STORY! And I HATE spoiler reviews. Ha! Also, in a way I’m truly thankful I took the time to purchase and read this, it brought awareness to a topic that no one really wants to speak about, and it doesn’t matter why type of relationship you have. IT STILL HAPPENS. But there is so much GOOD that happens. And the chemistry. I absolutely loved this book.

I recommend this book.

Hunt You Down

A hard fought hurt/comfort MM romance. David hasn’t had it easy and just when he thinks he’s catching a break the floor gets pulled out from under him but in steps Andre as his white knight. Not in the traditional sense but as someone he can rely on to keep him safe and secure even when he can’t. Triggers for the ending but otherwise a good clean finish.

Errr, well this was certainly something for sure… correct me if I’m wrong, but story had the air of a M/F romance … like the character was once female and changed to male ….

Sooo good! Please check the content warnings before you read this. That being said this was so good.. I want to first shout out to diversity rep!!! This is how you do it! This is what we are asking for. This is how we want our skin color to be described. At no point were we compared to food. It wasn’t struggle love, but it did highlight culture and culture difference.
This was a JOURNEY!!! It was a hard journey but worth it. Emotions were felt. I love the don’t mess with my man vibe also. The only thing I do wish was that it was dual POV. The author did a great job at letting us know what was happening with Andre, but it’s not the same as hearing his thoughts. I know that this was long, but I would have kept reading if I’d gotten his POV. I really really want to know what he was feeling/thinking especially at the end. The smexy was yum, and the side characters were good. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.
