Alfons, who here I think is about 4, has an invisible friend called Mållgan. Just the name shows Bergström's uncanny skill. It's not a normal Swedish name, and it sounds odd, the way that made-up names from small children often sound odd. When this was translated into English, I'll bet the translator spent a day or two thinking about how to deal with it.

Dad is good about humoring Alfons with the Mållgan game, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much. He's laying the table for dinner. "Don't forget to lay a place for Mållgan too!" says Alfons. Dad sighs and lays another place. You can see him thinking that it's easiest just to give in, but how long is this damn thing going to continue?

So one day, Alfons and Mållgan are playing with his toy train set, and Alfons gets one of those terribly tempting bad ideas. Suppose they borrowed Dad's pipe, and used it to make smoke for the engine? That would be so cool! He just can't resist trying it out. But, as so often happens, somehow the pipe gets mislaid. When they've finished playing, it's nowhere to be found.

Dad really likes his pipe, and looks everywhere for it. He's in a dreadful mood. Alfons has a bad conscience, and doesn't dare own up to what's happened. Dad's finding Mållgan even more irritating than usual. The pipe is gone for several days, and things are rather tense in their little household.

Then, Dad comes home one evening and tells Alfons that he's got something nice. It's a going-away present for Mållgan! Because Mållgan must have important stuff to do somewhere else, right? He's bought new batteries for Alfons's flashlight. Alfons loves playing with the flashlight, and allows himself to be bribed. Mållgan's going off on vacation, he says.

Alfons goes into his room, switches off the lights, and takes out the flashlight. It's so much fun to shine the beam everywhere! And then, he suddenly notices something on the floor... it's Dad's pipe!!! He runs out and gives it to its owner, who is overjoyed.

"Alfons!" he says. "Where did you find it!?"

"Oh, I didn't find it!" says Alfons. "It was Mållgan!"

"But I thought Mållgan had gone off on vacation?" says Dad.

"Well, yes," admits Alfons. "But sometimes he comes back and visits for a bit."

I'm struggling to find the moral, but it's a lovely story.

Bra bok.

This is indeed another favorite of mine in the series! On the children level, an image of Mållgan is interesting, even sweetly mischievous. But why not, we kids can always have fun with an imaginative friend. We would never feel lonely when Dad gets sour or tired and wants to be left alone. On the adult level, pappa Åberg makes a great dad for never forgetting saying "sorry, my bad" and trying to show "respect" to the mischief even when his beloved pipe is nowhere to be found!
