The Genie Whisperer #1

The Glittering Gems

Rate this book
Ali ran away from home to forge her own path, but the alluring genies thrust into her life have other plans . . .

After having her whole life dictated by her parents, Ali is determined to gain her independence. She’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish her dreams and forge her own path—which does not include relying on the alluring genie suddenly thrust into her life. But when one handsome genie multiplies into three, she fears her plans for independence may be thrown into disarray.

After spending thousands of years enslaved to humanity, working with a human is the last thing on any genie’s mind, but Tavor senses something different about Ali. Aside from her refusal to make wishes, she’s somehow unwittingly stealing genies from their masters—which is supposed to be impossible. Could there possibly be something special about her?

As Tavor pulls Ali deeper into his world, she can’t help but feel compassion for the genies and their fight for freedom. But this new world entangles her in the lives of the genies’ former masters, who are more than eager to kill to reclaim their genies. Can Ali continue to help the genies when doing so not only risks her own dreams, but also her life?

The world building is so seamlessly laid out. Everything builds start to finish- character development, knowledge of the magic, plot, humor. I love each of the genies’ individual personalities. And the main protagonist is relatable, but also three dimensional. I’m stoked to read Part 2. I need more genies.

Free on Google Books, and actually really enjoyable. Urban fantasy with a fairly basic magic system, a likeable main character, and an interesting premise. Definitely interested to see where this series goes.

Entertaining!

I liked the FMC a lot! She has principles and doesn't abandon them when it gets difficult. She also owns her mistakes and flaws. She is refreshing in a way I needed after the last book I read. Also an interesting premise. Looking forward to more.

On the fence...

I've never read anything from this author before, and while I'd enjoyed most of this book, I really didn't care all that much for the adventurous storyline for the second Genie, but whatever!

I'm hopeful that the second book picks up with a bit more pizzazz. I do know from previous posts about this book that it is a slow burn, but not getting any feelings that something may happen between the MFC and the Genies. The author isn't giving off any vibes besides the MFC finding them attractive... (shrugged & eye-roll)

So we shall see what happens next!

Content: I only got about 6 chapters in, so this will be solely for those chapters.

Profanity: Mild. There were about 3-4 milder swear words.

Violence: Moderate. There was talk about murdering children, torturing people, inciting war and a partial on-screen beating that resulted in broken bones.

Sexual: None.

I decided to DNF after around 6 chapters due to the intense ick of the evil people in this. The sheer lack of any sort of remorse or humanity was jarring and disturbing to read. As an example, I decided to quit after I read a scene where Brandon, the evil POV in the book, murders a homeless man who asks him for food as he's going into a diner. Brandon kicks him and is disgusted that he's dead after hitting him, and then throws him in the dumpster "where all worthless garbage belongs". That was too much. If that's how the tone and content of this series is going...no thank you. I feel a bit ill honestly. Time to go read something light and hopeful.

Shudder.

Not really a romance novel but a great story. Hope it doesn't fall flat after the first book. Going to purchase the second if its not good then that it

This review covers the entire series!

TLDR: It’s not perfect but it is still GREAT.

The long of it: This series is solid. Good characters with clear voices and visible growth, and relationships that are endearing while not being perfect, because nobody is. They mess up, they make up and are better people at the end of it all. It’s a long, satisfying trip that will have me checking out everything else Nicole Eatough writes, I was so charmed by this series.

Ari is very fun to follow. She’s sheltered but not naïve, being aware of (most of) her shortcomings, making her a wonderfully rounded, believable character that is easy to root for. My personal favorite side of her being the fact that, despite Tavor’s unimaginable power and willingness to go to extremes to achieve his goals, she’s never afraid to tell him no and challenge him when she feels he’s going too far. I loved their little Obstacle Course date.

The genies are also a key part of the series’ charm, making me fall in love with each of them at different points so that even now I can’t decide on a favorite. I would say Rajan and his dreams of , but towards the end . And yet, when I think of Ari’s reaction to her first kiss with , my heart melts like I’m reading the scene for the first time again.

Characters aside, the story is also strong on its own, with actually unexpected twists and turns. I quite literally gasped out loud when was revealed. Not to mention all the murder. There’s a lot of it, and while deserved, it still shocking given how cute the genies can be to Ari one second, only to turn around and subject the wizards to some true ruthlessness.

The series isn’t perfect, though, with a big part of it being the editing. At least a third of the series is comprised of characters reminding the reader of past actions, exploring reactions to new information in scenes that could have taken place off-screen, or speculating about other characters’ possible interpretation of certain events. So much could be cut and make the series snappier. I think this is the author’s first work, though, so I can’t blame her.

But shockingly, the weakest part, for me, was the entire subplot of Ari’s parents.

But for all I complain, I obviously loved the series because I ate it up. I genuinely took time from my day job to read, because I was – still am—so in love with these characters.

Fingers crossed the author gets a competent editor to look over the series, and maybe re-release it in a series of omnibuses or something.

This series a hidden gem (Sorry, I had to do it :) )

Officially Ali is the smartest FMC I've read so far. It is so beautiful to read how her mind works. She is so innocent yet so very wise it is a good mix.

But most excitedly, some of the POVs shocked me. I did not expected that. I love it.

Authors writing style and voice is another exciting thing to read, I am officially fan of Nicole Eatough. Episode style writing is another intriguing choice to do. Another thing I enjoyed.

I am committed to read all the books on the series. I enjoyed the first book very much. I highly recommended this series!

Ali just wants to live a normal life- go to college, have her family respect her, and be an engineer. That all changes when a raven drops a pretty gem next her. Genies exsist!!!
The Glittering Gems is a slow burn romance that focuses on the build of the world with relationships second.

Wow this was an interesting start to the series. There were times I wanted to go through the book and strangle the main character but I respect how she feels. But it was a great read kind of like a mini box set. Loved it!.

Fun read!

This book is quirky, exciting, mysterious, action packed and has you guessing what’s to come next!

This is a slow burn book and you don’t even scratch the surface of what’s truly going on in this book yet but it’s been a fun read and will read the next to see what’s to come!

Nice scifi.

Medium violence, Strong willed MFC Learning to stand on her own. This new take on genies I enjoyed. The author made their characters stand out in thoughts and actions from the everyday humans by demonstrating how a being with unlimited power that they cannot access would then hold themselves above the world.

wow!!

I do love how this book series has started, officially a new fan of Eatough’s! Ali is a great character with compassion and intellect, not just how some FMC’s may come off as jerks, you can see how she cares. Tavor and Flame are my fav so far but want to know more about Ian…. Curious as how this will continue though…. On to the next in the series 😁😁

A very different, clean urban fantasy

Not what I was expecting. Fiercely independent Ali gets thrown a curve ball when she literally has a genie dropped in her lap. She has spunk and a good heart. Where are the moral lines when dealing with murders and slave trader who are above the law? I can't wait to read her next adventure.

A new and interesting concept on wishes and djinn. Fish out of water teen, greedy monsters ex-masters, over-protective / controlling parents

This book is good as long as you don't expect any sort of romantic involvement from any of the characters. I am on book 7 and I think the h might have had her cheek kissed a couple of times.

The h is either asexual or is so sexually repressed to be almost phobic about anything remotely romantic/sexual.

Captivating story, exciting events, characters with depth.
Hard to put down.
Now that I have the entire series (with many thanks to the author), I have started reading again from the beginning.
I don't understand why it isn't more popular. It's exciting, but also fascinating, entertaining and, yes, there are some downsides, but it's well written. I'm very happy with this series.
