R to L (Japanese Style). Final Volume!FriendThe final battle for the fate of humanity rests with Ral and his Shadow Grad. But he must first get past the immortal Red Phoenix, a Shadow with no known weakness, and the fearless Black Rhinoceros before he can take on the Queen of Darkness. With her Clear Human Shadow, Opsquria can kill with just one look! But will Ral have to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to defeat her?!
I read this because I am such a fan of Obata Takeshi's artwork. Storywise, I didn't like this nearly as much as Death Note or Hikaru no Go, but well, the art was beautiful, and the characters made me laugh, and it's always interesting to see Japanese takes on the traditional western fantasy story. It was enjoyable, but nothing that'll ever make my "best manga ever" list.
Though it felt a bit rushed towards the end, I am pleased with how this wrapped up. Ral grew so much over these four volumes, it's a shame for it to end the way it did...
The casual sexism continued throughout and there ended up being no good women fighters in the whole series. They were usually sideline commentators, like most shonen manga from this era. People would randomly know important plot points, which was weird and unsatisfying to the readers. This ended so quickly that it felt like the Final Boss and the last villain minions didn't really have all that power. I would have hated it if it was too long though so shorter is the better option for me personally. I actually love the ending because it was a really good bittersweet ending that showed the consequences of the final fight.
...okay, the last cliffhanger extra bad thing... was resolved and didn't have any impact on the story. Now standby for a small rant.
Okay...this volume is EXTREMELY rushed. You can tell that Jump had axed the story and the author was in a hurry to try and wrap everything up. Honestly, I can't blame Jump. The premise of the story was sound and the art was fantastic, but the execution of the plot and the characters was seriously lacking and no amount of boobs is going to make the overall work any better.
Overall rating for this series: Barely 2 stars. Good premise, good art, lackluster story.
Well-drawn throughout the series. Ral and his fascination with boobs tones down toward the end of the series as he matures. It ends on a surprisingly sweet and sentimental note.
