After a one week delay, we have finally made it to Jedha, where in the meantime not much has happened. We do, however, get a big chunk of backstory, putting Tey Sirrek front and center!

About the content

The chapter “Tey Sirrek“ could not have a more suitable title. The third issue of the The High Republic series takes us back to the supposed thief’s past. First off, I’d like to point out that it was a good decision to lend more personality to the character. And as per usual, to get there, there has to be a fight first – which is still a pretty fun dynamic, however, after three issues of the same banter, it is starting to get repetitive. Cavan Scott flawlessly executes the twist of Tey Sirrek having once been a Guardian of the Whills, as well as the Sephi’s dialogue. I do have to say that his demeanor is starting to feel a little too forcedly cool by now though.

But let’s get into Tey’s story itself. The flashbacks intersect with the regular plot of the issue, creating a refreshing mix of both. I fully believed Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito’s storytelling of a younger Tey, as both versions of the character feel different yet the same. It is not much of a surprise that Tey is one of the good guys after all, but it did manage to make me smile. Which makes it all the more surprising that I didn’t see the moment revealing him as more of a morally grey character to us coming! Another thing cleverly told is how Tey got his droid and the origin of his nickname “fruit-face“.

But despite Tey’s dramatic, past the issue has its fun moments such as the Guardians stating that they cannot be robbed, only to realize just that. It is, however, a little disappointing that the plot has been put on the backburner and that Vildar and Matty, who is pretty much only standing at the sidelines and occasionally commenting the scene, do not get anything to do. Thus, after three issues, it feels like we have only been reading these snippets to build anticipation for The Battle of Jedha, which is going to begin in issue four (or next week for audio drama listeners), without having built any sort of real connection to these characters or making progress with the actual investigation. Where the 2021 run was brimming with plot, the 2022 run took us on quite a few scenic walks. The calmer moments and exposition are a welcome change of pace, but they have immensely slowed the plot down. But at least the issue still ends with a pretty literal bang, promising new conflicts for the coming issue that hopefully won’t have the characters running in circles as much any more.

About the illustrations

The illustrations part is getting quite redundant these days, as you probably all know my usual praise for Ario Anindito by now. Not much has changed when it comes to the illustrations, though it is a bit disappointing that Ario did not make more of the Guardians‘ temple, considering the design work he has put into Starlight Beacon. I did however, really enjoy the variety of species on Jedha and the tiny peculiar elephant (please let me know what this species is called). Additionally, I’d like to highlight the visual difference between present and past Tey, which wasn’t too obvious, yet still recognizable overall.

Conclusion

The High Republic #3’s plot is coming to a halt to put one of its protagonists in the limelight. Cavan Scott managed to turn the sassy Tey Sirrek into a more layered character and told us a plausible backstory about him. However, this has led to the other characters of the trio being sidelined within this issue. Giving us a short moment to breathe before the battle begins is probably a good idea, yet, I am ready for more plot and intrigued to see how the story will unfold once the Path of the Open Hand is getting involved.

“Yes, we are protectors of the temple, not every lost soul within the holy city.”

Excuse me? Are you just gonna introduce my new favorite character just like that? I better get more of Tye Sirrek, because I really, really like what's going on with him so far.

Vildar is still quite interesting but his animosity with Tye came so out of nowhere that it's a bit frustrating as much as it is a bit hilarious to watch.

We're finally getting into some plot elements and I'm already seeing the connections between this and the main books of the phase, which is a lot of fun. I'm certainly invested now. Even if the characters are a bit all over the place.

Getting to see part Tye's backstory was really cool as we're slowly exploring his character. I'm really liking everything we're discovering. I cannot help but feel he's the main character as he has gotten more detailed attention than Vildar himself, which is funny.

The story is finally ramping up, however, and that is all that matters.

Matty, Vildar and Tey are surrounded by guardians of the Whills, but it's not because they are afraid of the Jedi or angry at their presence, it's because Tey Sirrek is there and they consider him a traitor. This issue reveals the backstory of Tey Sirrek and how he left the Guardians of the Whills.

I really loved getting to know more about Tey. He is an intriguing character and I liked seeing, through him, how the Guardians operate, what they value, what their mission and just how far they are willing to go for their mission and who they will let suffer to fulfil their sacred quest. Tey is fast becoming the shining star of this series for me. I love his energy, the design of his character and how they seem to be a bit shady but always for the right reasons.

Matty is also a delight, and I love how she is not going to let Vildar get away with being stupid. She speaks up and roasts him when needed, and I love that for her.

Cavan Scott is just a wonderful author, and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for this series!

Tey Sirrek - Guardian Of Jedha

Tey Sirrek receives a decent backstory as everything else comes to momentary hold. I really enjoy this main High Republic storyline so far. Especially this issue presents us with more information on the Guardians of the Whills and their own perception of their duties. Another fine addition to this part of Star Wars lore following last years manga "Guardians of the Whills". Nice cliffhanger at the end. 4/5

I knew I was right to like Tey! Really cool to see the backstory of the loveable, misunderstood scoundrel on Jedha. Poor guy can't catch a break. Neither can Vildar, but I feel like he's been the cause of most of his own problems so far, so I don't feel as bad for him as I do Tey. Old man needs to slow down and realize he doesn't know as much as he thinks he does (a lesson I have a feeling he'll come to terms with in a few issues ;) )

Not bad.

A slower issue for sure, everything stalls just so we can get a backstory for Tey Sirrek and hopefully make him more likeable. And it works, i like him more now. Not much more happens here, but what we got is good.

Overall: One of those slower issues that are not great nor bad, but needed.

Such a fan of the High Republic, finding it a bit trickier to follow how it’s all fitting together timeline wise but I think that’s just true dates I am receiving the books messing the order around… still loving it

Tey Sirreck and the Guardians of the Whills are so fascinating... Plus the variety of Force Users in Jedha part of the Convocation...makes me want each faction get explored in maybe one off issues or something.

The more we learn about Sirrek, the less compelling he becomes.
