Omega Quadrant #2

His Reluctant Omega

Rate this book
Omega Avery Stephens refuses to be the compliant, submissive mate he was raised to be. He’s tired of being told he’s less than and will have to wait for an alpha to come and ‘save’ him.

After his fathers die in a tragic accident, he must stand up and be responsible for his younger omega brothers. Knowing their savings will only go so far, he looks to the future. Avery will need an income and not the pittance an omega makes. He shears his long locks, purchases illegal scent blockers, and lies his way into college under the pseudonym Abraham Norcross, a beta.

Avery does everything in his power to prove an omega can be more than ‘a womb with legs’ but when he comes across his alpha, he struggles not to be the stereotypical weak and needy omega. Yet all he wants to do is go to his knees and beg the man to fill him with a child.

Can he find a path somewhere between heaven and hell—and still hold on to his self-respect?

The first book of this series left a really big impression of me, so color me surprised when this went out, I had no idea that it was coming, so I grabbed it immediately.

But is was awful *cringes*, I just couldn't even finish it.

My problem with this is Avery's character, I understand his frustration and his desire to want to change the world, but to me he was just a very juvenile character, who his selfishness and dumb decision making made this a book, that felt like a fucking joke.

Hear my rant:

1. He treats Wilder like shit because he is his mate, he represents everything he hates: the system, his limitations, his dependence, etc. Ah, but when he needs to make a decision to get away from him to not, you know, rut him like crazy, he does the opposite, so he just follows that system. I understand that this was to get the plot going, but it was the first red flag for me.

2. He knew Wilder was his mate, and he knew Wilder was nice because they had a 4 year relationship prior to the beginning of this book, he also knew the stakes of being around him without Wilder knowing who he was. But did he tell him that he was actually an Omega and his mate? No, because that would have been the smart thing to do and Avery isn't smart, he is just obsessed with going against the system and saying I'm a sufficient omega on my own. You weren't at the end. Dumb shit! Second red flag.

3. He gets in jail, because of course he gets caught impersonating a Beta, cause as we just said he is dumb as fuck! And he sees that as his opportunity to make a difference... *sighs*. I was so mad at this, this decision was so selfish, you have another humans who love you so much and another way to make a difference

4. The ridiculous "I want to get loud" phrase, the first time I heard it, I got stuck with the song from Jennifer Lopez in my head, for a battle cry it was really stupid, considering that he didn't get loud, Wilder did and the other Omegas. Avery was the spark, but he didn't have a say in much.

5. The political aspect that it took thanks to Avery's actions were unreal. As someone who comes from a communist system, what they achieved is not believable, is just unreal. Venezuela has been fighting for more than 20 years, Cuba for centuries, Ukraine has been fighting a WAR for far more time than this. So yeah, if you tell me that in months every request is gonna be met by the system? Fuck that shit! This aspect of the book was so naive I couldn't deal!

And this book became political the moment Avery decided to "get loud", so I have to talk about it 🙄

6. He learns he's pregnant but is too late to back now, he still wants to "get loud" 🙄. Dumb as fuck I tell you.

And that is basically where I left it, I hated Avery, he is a politician basically and I hate those fuckers.

So no, this didn't work for me at all!

WOW. Wow. I just finished this book and I don't know if I can adequately put into words how powerful this book was. But I'm gonna try.

I've been eagerly awaiting the follow up to HSO ever since I finished, and I knew this book, being a follow up to what is probably her most successful book, was a big project for Kelex. I'm so so happy to say that I think this one totally stands on its own as an equally amazing story, possibly even more powerful in certain and different ways than HSO was, and this beast of a book will put you through the gamut of literally every emotion and all the feels as Avery and Wilder fight for their HEA.

We met Avery and Wilder in His Surrogate Omega - Wilder, the brother of Jamie, and Avery is Gray's nephew. Avery is determined to be more than society dictates of omegas - he wants to be independent, autonomous, and have equality. For four years he hides his status, gets his education, gets a job lined up. But events happen that will change his life - and the lives of all omegas in the territory - forever.

I absolutely loooooved the chemistry between Avery and Wilder at the start of this. Wilder doesn't understand his attraction to who he thinks is a beta, but ooooh yall, this is just scorching with chemistry. I just loved reading as that simmer grew to a boil. I also loved that throughout this whole book, Wilder is such a good man. I really loved him.

It's hard to really get into this without giving away a bunch of spoilers. I will say that this, what omegas and Avery go through and fight for, for me at least, feels very...timely, with things going on in the US and my thoughts as a minority woman right now. I love how Avery's path sparks change and new laws and he becomes a voice for independence and equality. I know that some omegaverse readers aren't a fan of the stories that have omegas as second class citizens, but the way that this is written will enrage you and fill you with a lot of empowerment as the omegas stand up finally.

Also! I LOVE how many new couples this book sets us up for! OMG! Brett and Pierce! Lake and Vaughn! Tulla and Tensen? I'm gonna need stories for everyone.

So I loved this book. It's worth the wait to get more set in the HSO 'verse and now I'm just dying for more! I know Lake is young but man, I'm dying for his story lol.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

You know, I don’t read a lot of books where romance doesn’t take center stage. There’s the occasional fantasy, perhaps horror where there’s little to no smut. I walked into this series expecting smut with a background story. What I got was an emotional story where the romance was put on a back burner.

Am I complaining?

Absolutely not.

In his Surrogate Omega I was inundated with tears, it was heart wrenching and cathartic. In His Reluctant Omega I got a story riddled with political intrigue that brought forth heaps and heaps of anger.

I got a similar storyline when I read Leta Blake in which omegas are treated much like women a hundred years ago and beyond. They have no rights, they’re expected to find a man, pop out babies and take care their families.

Also similar to that era, omegas with no alpha or family to take care of them are limited to how they can take care of themselves. Unlike women that long ago, these omegas had even fewer options.

This is Avery’s story about how he changed his options by impersonating a beta so he could go to college and get a job to take care of himself and his family.

There was still romance and smut and quite honestly I found it unnecessary. Not to say I didn’t enjoy it, I did, but if you didn’t give it to me I don’t think I would’ve minded too much.

Having said all of that I do think this one was a bit long in the tooth. I don’t think big chunks needed to be eliminated but maybe just shaved. So unfortunately my enjoyment was weighed down with a bit of tedious filler.

Otherwise it was a very interesting story and it certainly ended with a bang. I’m excited to see what this author brings next.

I've been a fan and have read all of the book in the Quadrant and Western Provinces series. This extended length book was a welcome addition to the Quadrant series. Avery is an omega who was orphaned as a teen and felt responsible to help take care of his two younger brothers while trapped with few ways to earn money while forced to reside in the Omega Quadrant. He took steps to illegally pose as a beta, so he could achieve a university education and ultimately gain employment, two things forbidden to unmated omegas. While in his assumed identity, he occasionally met with a family friend, Wilder, who he recognized as likely his mate. Since neither one was interested in settling down, Avery kept his distance, enjoying his freedom. Will these two find their way to love and mating?

Readers who enjoyed the Breaking Free and Finding Free series by AM Arthur may especially like this similarly themed book. This book has family loyalties, social justice issues and equality for all, corporate crime, intrigue, lots of passion, and an endearing selfless love. I look forward to more books set in this omegaverse.

DNF @ 10%.

First, I don’t think I needed to waste my time re-reading His Surrogate Omega as a refresher, because the prologue rehashes it pretty well.

Second, I’ve spent more time avoiding reading this than reading it. The more you think about this, the less some of the points in this book and the first book make sense in the world Kelex has made.

I think there’s probably too many things going on in this for any of them being solid. It feels like it’s going to try and going in the political direction, too.

But also, I don’t want to deal with these huge info dumps told through the narrative or conversations over and over. All this talk of their religious book and Avery’s little blue history book is just *yawn*.

So having had most of the plot spoiled for me from someone who has read the whole thing, I know it’s not something I want to stick around for.

This book was well worth waiting for!
I loved Wilder, he was a patient and caring alpha. I would have thought he would have been hurt and mad that Avery deceived him for so many years but all his concern was for Avery and his well-being.
Avery was hard for me to love because he was so determined to get his way and damn the consequences with no regards to how it was tearing up his family. I respected 🤗 his noble cause with taking a stand for all the omegas and wanting to make a change/difference.
The author really left the end of the book with a real shocker, I can’t wait to see what and who comes next in this series! 👏🏻

This is a hard review for me to write because I really wanted to love this book and have waited literally forever for it to come out. Stalking the authors website to check for updates and even signing up for them via email. I even stayed up until 12am on its official release date to read it. That's how much I was looking forward to it. I honestly don't know what is missing from this book but something felt off for me. Since reading the first book in this series I grew to love the character development and relationships between all the characters but this had very little of that. It also made me dislike Avery as a person. As another reviewer mentioned him wanting to stay in jail and his reaction to Wilder trying to ensure their child would be raised safe was off putting. I understand the importance of the political aspect of this book for omegas but I feel like a lot of it was to the detriment to the characters as well as the story as a whole. I enjoyed the first part of the book where there was a little back and forth between Wilder and Avery, but after Avery is taken to jail is where it all goes downhill for me. I also feel like there was very little development between all the characters once Avery was in jail. This book was really long which I was looking forward to but not a lot happens. Very little scenes were given to the main couple of this book, including after the birth of their child. We fast forward most of that with time jumps. I feel like I never witnessed their relationship start or even progress and was just told about it or have things happen behind the scenes that should have been included in the story. I don't know if this was done for the sake of the political story in this book but I felt that was also poorly done. I understand Avery's reasons for wanting omega rights but the way he goes about it are selfish and unrealistic. It is also crazy to me that Avery is the one hailed a hero simply for remaining imprisoned while Wilder and other people championed outside for his cause.

At the end of the day I feel bad for Wilder for being stuck with Avery. I thought this story was going to be amazing since I really liked Wilder and was curious about Avery from the first book, but now I'm just left feeling empty and disappointed. I'm giving it 3 stars because I enjoyed everything up until Avery going to jail.

The author had mentioned that Wilder and Avery were the original couple with which this whole series had been inspired by, and it definitely comes through will reading it.
Though I felt this installment dragged a bit toward the 3/4 mark, it definitely held my attention more than the former book.

Moreover, these books from what I can tell are way beyond the “insta love” trope. The couples come together for no more than a feeling or chemical reaction—there is hardly any getting to know one another or dating.

Wilder and Avery were generic at best, but as I have mentioned previously I am a sucker for A/O and mpreg.

Wilder and Avery are complete opposites and in my opinion would not have been a couple that truly belonged together if it they weren’t very specifically put into this universe.

I have wanted to read Avery's story since the moment I finished reading His Surrogate Omega. So, I was really happy to finally be able to have this story in my hands and I don't know if it was my high expectations but this just wasn't all I thought it would be.

One of the things I loved about His Surrogate Omega was just how emotional it all was. Everything that was happening in that book tugged at my heartstrings but that level of investment in the characters and that level of emotion was just missing from this book.

This book is literally a story about widespread social reform but I feel like it would have meant so much more if Wilder and Avery were well-established as a couple before the shit hit the fan because as it happens in the book, Wilder and Avery are just beginning to come to terms with their attraction when things spiral out of control.

Avery and Wilder are both likeable characters, they just didn't make me feel for them. I mean they go through so much but it doesn't feel like that much considering how much the author was able to turn me inside out with just Jamie's death.

One of the things I genuinely loved about this story was the relationship between Wilder and Vaughn. It was really nice to see both of them shed their hostilities to build their relationship as brothers.

I enjoyed the story and it was an enjoyable read, it was just nowhere near my expectations for it, though that ending has me gearing up for the next in the series. The one thing this book managed to do very well was to get me interested in the Jaymes family and I really look forward to reading more about them.

I liked it but I'm a littleeee disappointed. I thought the romance was lacking and more of a subplot. The book mainly focuses on Avery's fight for omega rights and the difficult journey that he goes on to fight for a cause he believes in.

At over 600 pages, the book is very long and it felt like it too. I thought parts of it dragged, especially as sometimes it felt like we were repeating things. It's a slowww burn as well, which added to how drawn out the story felt.

I liked Avery and Wilder but I didn't feel the love between them or care about their relationship that much. Avery was standoffish to Wilder, which I can understand to an extent, but it lasted well into the book. I didn't really care for the and how things worked out politically felt a little too convenient.

Overall, I'm glad we finally got their story but the anticipation didn't live up to the actual experience. Perhaps I was too set on how I wanted the story to go. I am interested in reading the future books in this series, though!

Book 2: His Reluctant Omega → 3.5 Stars

”My fight was for him. Deep down, it was all for him.”

I was really excited for this story. I enjoyed the first one and this had the potential to be better as I thought Avery and Wilder were so likeable as characters in the first book. My problem was it was waaayyyyy too long. Like unnecessarily long that I really started to lose interest in it. The storyline was overly political and wasn't giving me the escapism that I love about romance novels.

I will be looking out to see if Lake's book comes next but if I see it's 600 pages plus, I'll have to pass I'm afraid.

It was really well written and didn't mean any disrespect to the author but for me personally, sometimes less is more.

Just not for me… stopped reading at about 50%. I LOVE the “secretly omega” trope so much, but this book was very long winded, long sections are spent discussing raising young children- potty training, birthday parties, crying during indoor events; it just wasn’t a fun book to read as an escape. The main character is unlikeable and so anxiety ridden .

Disappointing.

First off, this story was powerful. I found myself addicted and invested on multiple levels. I knew going in that I would love Avery & Wilder’s story, and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved their tension so much.

That ending had me craving the next book HARD.

The first part of the book is what I really enjoyed reading, they had a chemistry and angst and I loved it so much but then it just got so fast forwarded, to them making out to with so less steam and then political issues started that took away the romance from the book. I am not against political issues but their relationship went from knowing each other for like 4 years acquaintance to sex to suddenly love and pregnant ... What???

DNF @ 42%. Entirely too slow and repetitive. I feel like this book is long for no good reason. How long are we going to do this Heatex pill/avoid my alpha dance? Can we just move the storyline along please?? I read someone else's review (with spoilers) and no, mama! Not for me. I would have been pissed if I'd trudged through all this for the stuff that happens in the second half. I'm sorry I didn't like this book, given how amazing I think this author is, and how much of a hard time she has had in the last two years writing wise, but this was a no for me.

This was 600 pages too long and I am mad at myself for never knowing when to stop. But at some point I found myself half way through and realized it really wasn’t gonna get better. AND STILL I FINISHED IT. I only have myself to blame.
I was bored out of my mind while reading and my brain feels like mush. I pray I develope a DNF gene so I can learn to be a quitter and save myself pain.

maybe 4.5 just because I was so damn stressed the whole book. THE FUCKING ENDING. ALSO THE FUCKING BEGINNING. Read #1.9 and feel in love with Tulla and Beckett and they had such a cute love story and then BAM, TULLA'S LIFE IS TRAUMATIZING LITERALLY 3RD PAGE IN. So many questions that i fear will go unanswered. Where tf is Beckett, why is Tulla estranged from his kids, and why is he a sex worker. Like my heart just freakin dropped. Had a hehe moment because Tulla giving and teaching Avery how to do the Heatex shot reminded me of my ex teaching me how to give him his T-shot. I was honestly in awe in how political this author could make an omegaverse Mpreg novel. I am so obsessed. In the previous novel they had alluded to the mistreatments of omegas in this society and I had been disappointed that Gray kind of took a back burner on his frustrations once he was mated. But thank god for Avery coming in to save the day!!! Ignoring his mating so he can get a college degree. Sticking to his guns. Standing up for omega's rights even when he knew it was going to put him in prison. Like his character was so beautiful and crazy to say, but like he is what any activist would aspire to be. Like feeling so moved by omegaverse is such a crazy experience for me rn and i dont even gaf. The parallels between our society and how people of colored are treated like I just can't even get into it rn. " 'You have no right to keep me in here if I'm not in heat.' 'No right?' Remington chuckled. 'I have all the rights here, dumbass. In here...' he smiled. 'I am the law.' " The forced surrogacy for omega's in prison was absolutely horrible and the scene when they're in heat was just heartbreaking to read. "There, force-bred omegas languished, carrying the children of alpha criminals, only to give them away to the wealthy who struggled with fertility-for however many babies the judge sentenced them to." I am glad Tulla was the one that saved Avery, redemption arc af, and also like Tulla your life has been so hard I dont blame you. And the way that Avery treated Vero, knowing that the state caused these actions and he just needs mental health help and that in reality, he is not to blame for his actions. Rehabilitation instead of punishment!!! Wilder and Avery's dynamic, chef kiss!! I love how Avery was just as head strong and didn't fall off after mating. He knew his shit, he made sure Wilder knew his place, and Avery knows what he wants his life to look like and wont take any less. Wilder going out to protest for Avery, starting a movement and then also knowing it wasn't his place to lead it. Redemption arc for Gray by taking over the Omega rights movement. Also why tf does everything happen in the same day. Jamie dying the same day Gray's twins are born in #1. Avery and Wilder's wedding happening the same day their child is born happening the same day Wilder's father dies. HUH????? give me a damn break. The fucking ending was chaos. I couldn't get over the baby's nickname being Emo and then I get hit with the Warden/Wynter drama and having a different baby daddy who maybe was his true mate who tf knows. I saw the next book might be about that and I am not looking forward to it. Across these two books, Wynter and Warden have been painted as the worst people ever like get away from me. I am really glad though that Wilder and Vaughn fixed their relationship. Vaughn is literally just a gumball, hard exterior and ooey gooey center. But omg is his mate Lake???? Also isn't Lake like way younger???? Also disappointed that Brett didn't become a throuple with Avery and Wilder.

Quotes:
- " 'Demanding freedom is chaos?' Wilder asked, frowning. 'Perhaps it is for those in power.' "

This series deals with some heavy stuff. If you read the previous book, you know this series deals with the human condition and is not traditional "HEA." Although there is HEA, and it's not just pure tragedy, still, bad things DO happen to good people, and this series explores that. This doesn't make it a bad book, but some readers may be expecting an escapist romance, and this isn't escapism.

This book focuses on Grey's Omega nephew, Avery. Avery keeps his Omega status secret to go to college. He meets his Alpha, but keeps that knowledge a secret because even though Wilder could take care of Avery, Avery doesn't want to be taken care of. Wilder also makes statements throughout the book about not wanting to meet his mate, and not wanting to be tied by chemistry to someone he doesn't love. So Avery has no reason to reveal that they are mates. Then all that planning falls apart when Avery is outed as an Omega.

My main problem with this book is, because Avery chooses to avoid Wilder, to avoid the risk of reacting to his mate, they really have no relationship. We're told they feel a "pull" toward each other. But it's constantly avoided, so I didn't really see or feel any chemistry between them. The only time they are alone together, the only time where we could see any relationship building, is when Avery goes into heat. But the author chooses to have that happen off-page, so we don't get to see any of that. It made me feel like Wilder's fears came true, he ended up tied by chemistry to someone he hardly knows and doesn't really love. (He thinks he's in love, but if they were 2 people in our reality without a "mate bond," they would have no reason to fall in love. They barely know each other.) And their relationship is important to the other non-romantic plot elements, so it would have been great to really feel like true love was overcoming overwhelming obstacles. But it didn't feel that way to me.

The political and social story arch was great. I loved the story as a whole.

I nearly BURST INTO TEARS when I first opened His Reluctant Omega by Kelex!! I don't think I've ever waited for any other book as patiently, as devotedly. Ever since I've read the first book in series - His Surrogate Omega - several years ago + all the novellas and spin-offs, I've been checking all Kelex's pages for any updates every month or so. It was constantly on my mind... Imagine my emotions when I was FINALLY holding His Reluctant Omega in my hands!!

💥 And boy, was it worth the wait! This book is Avery and Wilder's story. In the world, where omegas have absolutely no rights and are basically imprisoned behind the walls of their quadrant from the moment their first heat comes, Avery refuses to just accept his fate. Despite the possibility of the most horrific and severe punishment, he pretends to be a beta, graduates from college and starts working at Wilder's company.

Wilder and Avery have been fighting their attraction for four years - Avery just can't risk exposing himself and Wilder is not ready to accept he's attracted to a beta, this is just NOT how things are done!

Of course, as soon as they give in, a whole chain of unpredictable, shocking, exhausting, beautiful and inspiring events unravels...

This book is MONUMENTAL! The issues it covers are so big, so sensitive, so emotional. While the first book in series was angsty and heartbreaking, it was still a story of only several people trying to find their version of happiness in this unfair, oppressive world they live in. But His Reluctant Omega... Damn! These guys just won't settle until the world accepts them. I wasn't sure it's even possible to resolve everything that was happening there in one book but Kelex did an outstanding job tying up loose ends without making it seem rushed and still keeping it believable.

‼️I STRONGLY recommend you read His Surrogate Omega first - together, they just make every emotion so much more intense, every action so much more meaningful and impactful. They should be read together, just like these families are together forever. And they're two great books, so why wouldn't you!

Book 2: "His Reluctant Omega"

In the sequel, "His Reluctant Omega," the spotlight shifts to Wilder, Jamie's Alpha brother and Rohan's steadfast friend. Initially resistant to the idea of Rohan caring for another Omega, Wilder's journey unfolds as he grapples with his emotions and eventually supports the evolving bond between Rohan and Grey.

Wilder, a seasoned Alpha, faces his own struggles as he senses an inexplicable connection with Beta Abraham Norcross. In a world where Alpha-Beta unions are unconventional, their magnetic pull defies societal norms. As Wilder and Abraham navigate their forbidden connection, a pivotal moment in a conference room changes the trajectory of their lives.

This installment masterfully delves into real-life issues, seamlessly weaving themes of equal rights, sexism, and discrimination into the fabric of the Omega verse. Author Kelex's storytelling prowess shines through, expertly narrated by the talented Michael Dean.

"Fateful Bonds" promises more enthralling developments as budding romances between other characters beckon, making this series a must-read for fans of Omega verse and Mpreg narratives. If your literary cravings lean towards a perfect blend of heart-wrenching emotion and societal relevance, this series is a resounding ten-star recommendation.

Loved the first book of Gray and Rohan story, so was looking forward to Avery and Wilder.

Whilst I loved the chemistry and the basis of the story, the only reason I did not rate higher is that I felt certain parts of the story dragged out quite a bit for me, especially in the first half with Avery predicament.

I loved when they finally succumb to one another but it didn’t hit me like the first book. It is a well written story and it flows beautifully from the first book and it’s great to see all the characters again and catch up.

I am looking forward to Vaughn and Lake story.

I really enjoyed Avery and Wilder as a couple. Their interactions were cute and they had good chemistry. That being said, the middle of the book really dragged and the book suffered as a result. I wasn’t very interested in the political aspect that came about towards the middle of the book, but I understand why it was there and that it has potential ramifications on subsequent books in this series. There was a cliffhanger at the end of the book and I guess we’ll see whose story comes next. Overall an enjoyable read.

His Reluctant Omega 🤍

5/5⭐️

Honestly I was debating making this one also 6 stars ! I’m obsessed with these stories 🥲 less emotional but still made me teary because Avery & Wilder were the sweetest also the heat definitely turned up with this one.🔥🫠 Book 3 is a redemption story but I’m waiting for Lake & Vaughns book come out so I can binge read again 🤭 I’m desperate for those two !

This one was full of politics and less romance but I still enjoyed it. It was just VERY different than the emotional romance from book one in the series (which I highly recommend!). Great side characters and it set up for several future relationships.

Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Can’t wait for the next book. I hope it’s Vaughn and Lake. Both interesting characters. Lots of chemistry 🔥
