This brightly illustrated picture book introduces young readers to a collection of North American birds, such as the American crow and the red-tailed hawk. Reprint.
Audrey Wood studied art and drama at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. She has owned an operated a book and import store, taught chldren's drama and art, and traveled throughout Mexico and Guatemala studying Indian folk art. She now lives in Hawaii with her talented family (husband Don and son Bruce, who have both collaborated with Audrey by illustrating some of her books).
This is a fantastic book, and yet seems relatively unknown.
The art is simply superb. Brings to mind the works of Maxfield Parrish.
There is no story, rather, 20 or so extremely short stories. The premise is to help identify the calls of some birds. I believe that Audry Wood has achieved that goal, quite well.
If you have any interest at all in the outdoors, birds, or just some really nice art, than you really should look at this book.
My niece really enjoyed this book and requested that I check it out from the library again for her. The pictures are just so pretty, and it was an educational read.
This was a very beautifully illustrated book that went with the words of the story. It was a bit 'older' for my 2 year old granddaughter (even though we usually read older stories for her) but it was okay because the illustrations on each page was bright enough and 'fun' to look at. We discussed the birds after we read about them. The seasons as on each page some are summer, some are fall, some are winter, etc. and we also pointed to other things and talked about them. If you like nature and outside you'll love this book for your young reader. Or it can be used for the older elementary school children as guides to various birds and the world they live in.
I have always loved Audrey Wood’s books since reading The Napping House. I liked this book because it depicts the different birds and their “Birdsongs” they we each see and hear in different cultures and places. The book has beautiful pictures from Robert Florczak, each picture is framed with an art deco mode border. This book reminds of an Eve Bunting style book.
Another fantastic book by Audrey Wood. Birdsong, is a great introduction to several birds found across the U.S. with great illustrations showing you what the bird looks like, and a story that helps to tell you what the bird sounds like. This was a cute and very well done book.
Incredibly beautiful illustrations. Subtly teaches children and their parents different bird calls, respectful observation of nature and peaceful interactions between humans and wildlife.
I personally found this book to be kind of boring, but i could see where it would be useful in an animal science lesson focusing on birds. This book could also be used in a culture lesson because it touvhes upon different cultures and their activities.
This is the third in the crappy book string from early May 2011. :( Nothing to even say about it. I should just put a bunch of different bird chirps in here and call it a review. Apparently it works.
